Watch my 3D Airport being tested for 12 different sized earthquakes!
This project took me more than a week to finish, and I would so appreciate if you guys could SHARE this video on social media or any other apps! :)
I hope these simulations will bring more earthquake awareness around the world and educate the general public about potential earthquake related hazards. All these simulations take into consideration only the shaking caused in close proximity to the earthquake's epicenter.
This earthquake collapse simulation was created in Blender 3D with the Bullet Constraints Builder (BCB - a structural simulation code made by Kai Kostack) which extends Blender´s basic physics functionality with a sophisticated toolset to simulate load dynamics in building structures.

As someone who has been dealing with earthquakes for 9 years, I would like to inform you about something. What you refer to as PGA is actually spectral acceleration. An earthquake with a PGA above 1.02g has not occurred so far, but there was an earthquake with a spectral acceleration of 4g. PGA and spectral acceleration are different terms. For example, if I give an example, the PGA of the 7.8 Mw earthquake in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023 is 0.7g. However, the spectral accelerations in that earthquake were up to 2.2g (Source: AFAD). Similarly, the PGA of the 7.6-7.8 Mw earthquake in Gölcük on August 17, 1999 was 0.5g, but the spectral acceleration reached 2.06g. In the 2016 New Zealand earthquake of 7.8 M magnitude, the PGA was 1g but the spectral acceleration reached 3.23g. For this reason, the PGA expression in your videos is incorrect. It would be better to use spectral acceleration instead or edit it as PGA.
@cassidytoysnhk
@cassidytoysnhk 11 ай бұрын
And I would also like to point out that there is a huge difference between 0.5g PGA and 0.7g PGA. There are only a few earthquakes on Earth with a PGA above 0.5g or a spectral acceleration above 2g. There are some astonishing examples, such as the 6.1 Mw earthquake in Düzce, Turkey on November 23, 2022, which had a PGA of 0.54g! So magnitude is not directly related to acceleration. We will be able to see this in 4 >7.0 Mw earthquakes that will occur in the Marmara Sea in the future. The largest earthquake will be 7.7 Mw in the Eastern Marmara Sea, a 7.3 and 7.4 in the Central Marmara Sea, and a 7.4 in the Western Marmara Sea (Ponytail fault model for Marmara( Prof. Dr. Cenk YALTIRAK's).) In the 7.7 earthquake, 1.1g PGA will be recorded in the Herzegovina Delta (western end of Izmit Gulf)! This is a world record and has not been seen in 2004 Indonesia, 2011 Japan or 1960 Chile earthquake! The southeast of the European side of Istanbul will experience 0.7-0.9g acceleration (the map is much more detailed), while the Anatolian side (Gebze, Pendik or nearby) will see 0.8-1g or less. The impact of the earthquake will significantly decrease as you move away from the two ends or the center of the fault because it will be a shallow earthquake (8-13km). Acceleration on the north side of Istanbul will be 0.3g. Of course, in most places that will be subjected to acceleration above 0.7g, the spectral acceleration may be above 2.2g... The VS30 ground magnification velocity of the Herzegovina Delta, which will be exposed to 1.1g PGA, is 280 m/s², which is very bad. In this case, the spectral acceleration here may exceed 3g (maybe 3.5?). If all 4 faults break, it will be 7.9 Mw. Here, of course, acceleration values will increase, but mostly on the European side of Istanbul. On the Anatolian side or in the Herzegovina Delta, the other 3 earthquakes will not have much impact (still will, but much less than 7.7...). So in this case, a place that will see 0.7g PGA on the European side of Istanbul may see 0.79g PGA... Or a place that will see 0.9g will see 0.94-0.97... I got carried away because this is my area of interest:)

Excellent... if grim. Figure that when the tower goes that the airport is useless even for the arrival of dignitaries and relief workers Of course... oh, the Humanity! How vulnerable we are to an earthquake. At some point, just walking around would be like moving about while drunk.

@@EarthquakeSim it would be cool to see the harbour bridge in Auckland it’s a babyhood landmark for me👶 very nostalgic for me it’s made out of steel and consists of trusses, they are supposed to add a sidewalk on that huge freaking bridge but I’m starting to doubt it it would be cool if you add a sidewalk like the one planned to be added to the bridge thank you for listening

You might be surprised to find out that airports can operate just fine without air traffic control towers. Many small fields without airline service do so 24/7, as they just don't have a tower to begin with; other airfields do so during times when the tower is unstaffed, either due to scheduling or an emergency situation (such as an evacuation due to disaster or the threat of such, or, as happened in Vegas a couple years ago, the controller on duty suffering a stroke or other medical emergency). The latter case is called "ATC Zero," and would apply here. Basically, at that point, the airport reverts to an "uncontrolled field," where the pilots operating there work out their own traffic management solutions on the fly, by A) reporting their locations and intentions to other pilots by radio over a Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (in the case of a closed tower, that would be the normal control tower frequency), and 2) watching for each other to maintain separation and avoid collisions. (It's a big sky out there and if you're careful, there's plenty of room for everyone.) Once they have confirmation that the runways and at least some of the taxiways and ramp areas are intact and clear of debris, the airport can be reopened under ATC Zero/uncontrolled field operations to allow at least limited traffic in and out in fair weather. The control tower isn't *required* for operations, it merely makes them more efficient by providing a "big eye in the sky" viewpoint that can coordinate traffic.
