Voxel is probably using a n underlying voxel volume to calculate the geometry. Kinke modifieying terrain in No Mans Sky. Clay is probably just doing what msot sculpting application do. Different math = Different tool. at tleast that my train of thought. I could be compleatly wrong too, I'm not a Dr.

I tried 3dcoat over several years and version. This software is a hidden gem. The Paint/Retopo/UV modul is one of the best i know on the market. If you use 3dcoat with blender, it's a great combo. The sculpting looks similar to zbrush, but especially voxel sculpting has a total different approach than zbrush. While Zbrush don't act much as real clay, an inverse sculpting, like a real world sculptor, is not a typical workflow in zbrush. While in 3dcoat, the voxel work from outside to inside. You have a block, and carve, cut, boolean, scrape your form out. Adding clay, removing clay. It's a great thing for concept art and prototyping, though, without bother much with the topology. The Interface. Ok they improved a lot over the years. But it's still a pain in the ass, and needless to say, it's ugly. I would compare 3dcoat interface with gimp. You have to sit down for an hour, and customize it, to your needs. This is the first thing you should do. And it's highly customizable. Even more than zbrush. A hint maybe for the devs of 3dcoat. Give the users a couple of themes and pre made interfaces into the bag. So the new user have a base, where they can start. This would also help to remove the clutter, which could feel somehow overwhelming when starting with this software. The features are brutal, but they also know how to hide into menus, not very logical sorting and this fucking notice boxes, while some really "legacy" tools, come with unpleasant default values. Another thing worth mentioning is the license possibilities, very good for poor freelances though. I would not say it's a competitor for zbrush, it does similar things, but plays on another field with many players, while zbrush can't do many things, only one thing perfect. I guess if they finally manage to unfuck the interface, 3dcoat has a great future.

I found it interesting that you did a review of a program that began as a texture painting program/substance alternative (hence 3d-coat) and skipped over the texture painting. 😅 I bought it a good few years back now, after finding that the fantastic auto-retopo, UV and solid smart painting tools made it a great complement to blender. The no-subscription pricing model is a big draw too.

I use 3d coat often and have done for years. pros ... it has superb sculpting tools, good box modelling, good using, the smart material system is a breeze, good baking, great retopo. Cons...learning curve can be steep in places, and the UI has issues. It really has to be used in one window, it lacks UI Customisation and the tool icons are too small in places. other than that, it's an awesome tool and alot of excellent artists use it.

I know how to use almost every 3D software out there... but 3D coat I have tried 3 times to include it to my workflow and I just can't! lol 😥saying the learning curve is steep is a little, is the freaking everest of 3D software, everything is different and that UI is too much 😓

Love the program. The Ui problems cause confusion to start but once it’s been used for a bit it becomes easy. Plus it’s able to be customized to the point of blender’s level of ease.

Problem with 3dcoat is that the Ui is on a zbrush level of wtf and you have no comprehensive tutorials online. I mean like proper artists making payed courses ala "intro to 3dcoat" for example like you find for zbrush left and right

I have a question about the auto-retopo. If you look at 10:24, the connection between head and the horns - the edge flow is completely ignoring the contour. How would you approach fixing that in 3D Coat, is it something you can do after the auto-retopo, or do you need to prepare it better, so after the first pass of auto-retopo you undo it, point out the contours it didn't get and let it run again? Or rather the hard way and fix it completely manually afterwards?
@VELIR-jw4bb
@VELIR-jw4bb 2 жыл бұрын
I think you can do both ways as you wish. 1) Undo after retopo if it is missing contours and main details > prepare autoretopo settings with painting focus areas to get more accurate retopo there: contours, holes, thin things etc ( after autoretopo you can fix manually the places you forgot to paint ) . 2) Just ignore preparing/painting and fix main details like contours after autoretopo manually, using edge splits/flows/bevels etc. ) Actually autoretopo makes whole big part of model ready for your minor manual adjustements, also you have your main highpoly model still visible as reference so you can correct topology much easier

3D coat does support Linux however it comes with the huge, massive caveat that the developer has a long history of ignoring upgrades for the platform. At one point we had *no releases for over two years*. No bug fixes, no security fixes. They wouldn't even update the glibc version they used to build because "it was too difficult" (they targeted centos 5 and 6 when 5 was already EOL'd and not even a remotely current version of 7 but a long deprecated releases).
@computer9764
@computer9764 2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, it is a lot of work to keep toolchains, QC, etc updated for each platform. It sucks that Linux still has such a small userbase...
@hellishinc
@hellishinc 2 жыл бұрын
@@computer9764 That's an excuse. If they can't keep the product updated and functional, don't sell it. If you pay for two years of updates, then you're contractually entitled to two years of updates. If they don't hold up their end of the deal, that's fraud.
@robsanta74

I will also say that, as of today, the Linux version only lags behind by one release. So, atm, while the Windows and Mac versions are at v2022.25 the Linux version is at v2022.24. That's just a difference of a few days.
@hellishinc
@hellishinc 2 жыл бұрын
@@robsanta74 that's fine and well but what about all the people who bought v4 and didn't get a single update despite paying hundreds. Are they expected to have to pay again to "upgrade" to the current version and shell out another few hundred? To get what they were promised?
@robsanta74
@robsanta74 2 жыл бұрын
@@hellishinc I feel your frustration and wish that I had a better answer. All I can say, for starters, is that Pilgway never promised free lifetime upgrades. It's an unsustainable model and it was nothing short of amazing that they did it for as many years as they could. Second, had you upgraded to v2021 immediately, your upgrade cost would have only been $90 and $75 maintenance for every 12 months after. You could maybe contact sales and see what they have to offer. Nothing may come of that, but you never know. Finally, if Linux got neglected for so long then maybe it was probably a combination of them not having enough such users and a small enough team where they were unable to give it the attention that it needed, deserved. Not a great excuse, but probably the most likely one. Andrew & Co aren't exactly Adobe. Like I said, I wish that I had a better answer for you. They're there for Linux users now, at least for the moment. Can't really undo the past. That said, as far as CG software goes, Windows has always been the platform of choice. At least in my 33 years experience doing CG. Mac and Linux users just about always get the short end. Not fair. I agree. It just is. Probably a market penetration, support, and presence issue.

i guess im a weirdo i find coats interface better than z-brush. its more direct and simple and conventional all things i like. zbrush unless you heavily customize your menus and ui will have you going all over the place to do even simple things. ive used both programs now in great detail btw. the voxel / surface thing takes some getting used to but once you see the advantages of both you can really appreciate the program more. switching back and forth vox/surf is super easy. honestly i dont see zb providing nearly the same value and depth for tool sets for games pipeline that coat does. zb is not really a full process app. its sculpting and thats pretty much it. doing anything else in zb is just painful. and now that maxon has taken it over and made it sub hell im moving to coat even more. i like simple payment models not constant drains on my money. i do wish they would focus on fixing bugs and get a real qa dept going. they rely on their users to submit reports which is fine but thats no substitute for qa. also their is no save feedback when file save is happening so if you close the program and its just not done saving well stuff will be missing next time you load in. this is crazy to me. in the community they say this is just known but hasnt been fixed in forever. they also say that if you turn on the zip file on save you get progress but i found this also gives no feedback in the ui that the operation is going and completed. so yeah its a very powerful program but its a bit of swim at some risk. their is a lack of up to day tuts but the old ones are still useful to learn with since concepts are same still. in the end id say def use it but use the forums and ask questions and discord channels etc esp if you come up to some weirdness. to dismiss it though because of its sometimes rough edges is a mistake tho. their is power there to get esp for game production art. and once you get over the hump of learning its fun and unlike zb you will find its menus more direct and simple than zb without even customizing. anyway...bye

the UV Editor is one of the best in the market. It's mighty and easy to use, similar to RizumUV. The Vertex/UV/BAKe Modul is also great. For handpainted concept stuff, much better than substance. This alone is worth buying 3dcoat. The sculpt stuff is nice, if you get used to the different approach. But i saw Artist doing awesome stuff with this. Great hardsurface capabilities, fast boolean operation. Very nice.

had this for 3 years and only use this for UV and retopo sometimes. Some tools suffer a lot of lag Retopo -quads is unusable with high poly reference. Trying workout just how to do things is the biggest pain. Latest update broke my applink from Blender, back reinstalled 4.79 to UV. Terrible quality control on updates. You will want a sub due to the updates breaking things... There is a lack of tutorials, this is a big problem.

no way pal! :( blender development is done by running a short film every year. So it follows the logic and needs of those working for the short film. That's why interface is illogical is confusing, it doesn't follow a user friendly concept, but it follows what the people who made the short film needed. They don't need Voxel, that's why they won't develop it.
