We first installed this style of "fence" about 2 years ago and it's served us and our vegetables very well. It's based on a design we found from Premier1. It uses three runs of electrified line spaced in such a way that deer have a hard time navigating it.
Come check it out and hopefully it'll help keep the balance between nature and food production.

I've been considering a version of this as I have heavy deer pressure and they're doing a lot of damage to my garden. The ground here is very sandy under an average 2" topsoil layer so not sure an electric fence would ground properly. Maybe there's other options for that which I haven't found yet, but doing it 3D style is looking like the best option in the front yard where it's more visible and a 7 foot mesh fence like I use out back would be undesirable. Adding a few lines of high strength fishing line can apparently help too because they can see the electric wire but not the fishing line so touching something they don't expect is supposed to help deter them. And if none of that works I did find a few different ways to place small IEDs to further deter them!

Using 3-6' grounding rods at least 10 ft apart should help with the electric part. If you can't get them that deep, try at an angle (this is what we have to do)

only ground rods need to be wet, your sinking them almost 6ft down. If its that dry all you have to do is pour a bucket of water on them once a week should do

how do you manage the grass/vegetation that grows between the two rows?

At 4:40 you mention it is electrified. Up until then i was under the impression that it was because of the 3d effect. So...
@PoeRunCraftProvisions
@PoeRunCraftProvisions 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry... The 3D effect confuses the deer so they don't try to jump over it. The shock is in case they want to go under it or aren't sure. I suppose you could not electrify the line, I'd be curious how dedicated the deer in your area are to getting into your garden. Also, I've seen recommendations to use a bait on the fence to encourage the deer to smell the line, thus getting a shock. We've not need it.

@@PoeRunCraftProvisions Somehow one standard hight electric cord works to keep deer out (must not be all that motivated here or other options). Many put an upper and lower wire for smaller animals... Somehow they sense it and walk away without getting a zap. Never heard of baiting the fence...yikes that's just cruel.

What about using scent cups? Would that help or hurt the 3-D fence?
@PoeRunCraftProvisions
@PoeRunCraftProvisions 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, some do recommend scent cups to get the deer to touch the line with their nose delivering a shock. We have not found it necessary as the deer have respected the fence almost 100%. We've only had 2 grown deer inside, both times the fence was off by mistake. Fawns can walk under the line but we have had few problems with them overall

@@PoeRunCraftProvisions If the fence was off when the two deers got in, what does that tell us? Thanks for your work.

@@Billsfan2012 I suppose I should clarify that we had the fence off for a good part of the winter, not just 2 occasions. So yes, the electric does stop them from just walking in

Does this 3D concept really work??? What is a I put up an 8’ and then put a shorter electrified fence outside my taller fence
@PoeRunCraftProvisions
@PoeRunCraftProvisions Жыл бұрын
The short answer is YES, but there are some caveats, thought it sounds like you've got a modified version of our fence, but with more height. We replace our 12' high tensile electric fence we inherited with the property to the 3D fence as the other was ugly to say the least. Also being on a hill as we are, we have to adjust some of the heights to confirm to the terrain, we do this by looking at the lines from about "deer height" and adjust as needed.

@@PoeRunCraftProvisions I’ve got 8” in diameter poles at eight foot spacing….. I am considering putting the 6x6 wire on the outside ….. and then the tighter black meshed stuff on the inside (to product it). Effectively two layers to visually look through….. Thoughts????

@@1blgharris1 My understanding to part of the reason a 3D fence works with deer is they have poor depth perception and the visual effect of the two layers of just 3 lines doesn't make sense to them. They can easily jump over a 3D fence but don't because they aren't sure how far to go. I'm thinking the extra lines would give the deer more reference to maybe to jump over. With that said, I know someone who uses 2 rows of your common sheep/goat electric fence and has good success. Not sure the spacing, but I think it's 2-3 feet?

I just put in a 3d fence on my western Kitchen garden because of an especially vicious doe who has declared war on the garden and has destroyed multiple beds of plants in 4 successive nights and set me back months... She even digs to get under the fence and when confronted last night, she tore apart the fence getting out... She's a complete menace and I'm desperately trying to keep the b1tch out of the garden. I've never seen a deer this determined to destroy every last plant in a garden... She even tears plants out just to tear them out - Absolutely does it out of spite. Tomorrow I electrify both the regular garden fence and the 3d line I put in - I hope it sends a message to her of "GTFO of my garden and stay out..."

@@PoeRunCraftProvisions - It seems to be working - I'm adding fence border plants that deer hate but for now, the garden is doing well. I have motion sensing alarms in as well and I found that the doe was getting in under the fence which I had to pin down and reinforce with rebar to put an end to that little trick. I also raised the height of the fence to 9 feet. So far, things have been put to a stop with the invasions.
