3D Gaussian Splatting: Changing 3D Forever

3D Gaussian splats, like NeRFs or photogrammetry methods, are a way to create a photorealistic 3D scene using a set of 2D images. Its results are absolutely mind blowing. The paper describing this method was recently published at SIGGRAPH last month. After watching a few videos, we knew we had to experiment it ourselves. We experimented based on three different scenes: a daytime setting, a nighttime setting, and an aerial drone shot.

Google has enough information to convert the images into a 3d representation using the coordinates and the 3d parallaxing, but it won't match with the gaussian splattering because of the quality of the images. They limited the resolution for various reasons, but if you're interested there's codecs available from when the programming community required ample studying to complete the process.

This would be so cool! Sucks that the VRAM reqs are so high on the host comp :( maybe when 8gb dvram is normal on apus
@taureanwooley
@taureanwooley 10 ай бұрын
@@YourCitizen compression/codecs would fix that situation. Look at it like an 8k downsampled to a 2k then upsampled by 1990 avi. Definitely doable, but the quality would already look similar. There's also computer engineering/science classes that were worth about as much as the degree only that goes more indepth with this, but there's also some added security flaws that are created if used for collision and modulated ...

Great point about Google Earth! Between user generated content (think hiking with geo data) and their dataset of earth imagery, there is a lot they could do. Imagine fading between splats chronologically with some sort of infilling for smoothness. Historical videos from known locations to add to the dataset. Maybe even infer location of photos without a known location based on other visual context from the period. Stitch a visual history back together.

Makes me think of the technology in Minority Report where they recorded 3D video and played it back with a hologram system. (family video scene) As always, the technology is arriving now, and it's way better than it was imagined in the movie (as it usually is and I love it) Can't wait to be able to play with this ! It's just what I'm missing to be able to create my own virtual world in Unreal without it taking all my time and money ! It will make creating 3D assets so fast, easy and cheap ! Do you know if there's a way to signup somewhere to get notified when this comes out ?

@@badxstudio I've been looking into it but unfortunalty I have an AMD GPU, so I'm probably gonna have to wait until they release a version that is compatible later down the line. How can this be implemented in a game engine that needs to interactively relight surfaces? Would it need to be converted to a mesh with PBR materials?
@badxstudio
@badxstudio 10 ай бұрын
Great question. At the moment it's definitely not usable! The only way we can bring it to unreal engine is through a plugin that converts it to Niagara Particles. Although it's relatively light and runs at about 80fps considering the scene details, it does not react to light really well. On the other hand it does not allow objects to cast shadows on it yet. The plugin is in the midst of being developed so you can bet it is going to become better overtime. So either the particles sim and materials need to be improved or someone needs to find a way to convert it to polygons.

YESSSSSS!! Can’t wait for the “how to” video. I’ve been waiting to learn more. How about a include the Akiya Research plugin for UE in the video? Please…. Awesome video. Thanks for these!

in Cyberpunk 2077 BrainDance, you could go further than where the braindances were recorded and still see them in 3D (with less quality than nearby points though), this is exactly that!!!

In the mid-2010's I worked on an Unreal engine game that used camera mapping in a similar way (Until they switched to using standard Unreal rendering)

This was awesome to see. I don't know much (or really anything at all) about Gaussian Splatting, but does this method have the ability to export out a 3D mesh with textures?
@badxstudio
@badxstudio 10 ай бұрын
Hey bud! So can't export it as a 3D mesh with textures, but rather there is this Unreal Engine plugin that lets us convert this to Niagra Particles with materials. We just recorded a video on this which will be out in the next 2-3 days :)
@MonsterJuiced
@MonsterJuiced 10 ай бұрын
The problem with the UE5 addon for this renderer is that it uses Niagara for the gaussians and particles are slow to render so it's not quite as good.
@badxstudio

Oh really? we haven't tried it yet. I'm sure there will be improvement in the future
@MonsterJuiced
@MonsterJuiced 10 ай бұрын
@@badxstudio If it's that one on the marketplace for about £90 then yea, I read about it and it uses the niagara system. I made a similar system just for point clouds and the issues I came across were because particles get real slow to render even on the GPU after about 2-3million on screen. Just a heads-up mind you, I definitely want to see your work inside unreal but there is that drawback which hurts performance way more than just the gaussian itself unfortunately.
