Have you tried using profile shifted gears or whatever they are called? I used them for my rwd drift chassis gearbox and got about a 70% decrease in noise compared to spur gears, its really cool.

You probably mean helical gears. Indeed, a lot less noise! I also had surprisingly good results printing the motor-mounted gear in TPU. TPU is more heat-resistant than PLA and isn't affected when the motor gets hot, and doesn't need to be glued or screwed on the motor shaft: just print it with a slightly smaller diameter hole than the shaft.
