In the movie Spy Kids 3 there's a race with futuristic vehicles and one in particular caught my eye back in 2003, the one wheeled motorcycle. This radio controlled ice vehicle was born from the idea of having one big wheel in the rear and using a brushless motor to power it. With ice on the lake I figured it would be cool to add some skates to it.

Absolutely love this guys content! As a mechatronics Engineer myself, I love how realistic and original his ideas are. The way his designs start from concept to prototype , to failure , then back to the drawing board is perfect ! Keep it up man

Maybe try an Ackermann steering kinematic for the front? I think this will drastically improve the turning radius. Also looks cool :)

Yeah, or even having the motor directly drive the pivot and having it right in between the skates.

Great build! Always stoked to see what you come up with. Maybe for a 2.0 you could try a steering rack that turns the individual blades, and maybe a spring tensioner for the chain, as it would keep it tight while bouncing/flexing!

That looks great! I think understeer is caused by rear biased weight distribution in this case. Adding some camber will also help, as you want the edges to cut into the ice. Adding a chain idler would help with the chain issue. Or chainguides if you want to avoid friction (look up MTB chainguides).

The spike tire is so grippy in a linear fashion that I'm sure it drastically effect the steering.

To improve steering, you can always use hockey blades(more rounded) or smaller blades, though it has less surface on the ice the vehicle would be able to turn quicker. This with a leaning design you can further decrease the turning radius.

Brilliant content, thanks for the entertainment! Tip: Skates work two ways. The pressure created by the sharp edge creates a groove that makes grip. This pressure also melts the ice in the groove into water reducing friction. The curve of the blade determines the turn radius. You need much smaller skates, 3-4 cm, like curved razor blades. I made a prop-driven RC ice yacht once and had similar problems.
@bradleynorman9381
@bradleynorman9381 2 жыл бұрын
If you wanted to keep the same frame structure, you could simply turn it upside down so the weight is more effectively applied to the rear tire. It would also allow for more clearance for the skates to rotate solving your turning radius issue. I'm looking to get a 3-d printer soon, so I would love to create something similar. Great video, I love that your videos show the trial and error that you encounter.

Great fun project. It may have steered a bit better with a svivel system, like on dumper trucks (hjullaster). A self tensioner with a spring and with a gear I think would have been the best system for preventing the chain to come off. On my Tamiya Lunchbox I have used 13mm long Biltema screws that I screwed from the inside, duct taped the inside of tire and finally put in some tire foam. When I was finished I cut the screw so there was about 5mm protruding from the tire. They are perfect for ice driving and it will wheelie on ice. Those tires has lasted 7 years now.

As always great video and amazing editing I look forward to version 2. I'd imaging the biggest issue with the turning radius was the lack of downward force on the blade and how parallel they were to the ice, you want them to dig the edges of the blade in to decrease the turning radius same as if you were ice skating.

you will need a chainguide to keep the chain stay. The gear ratio also affects the torque acting on the frame. Your frame could fully surround the the whole chain mechanism to cancel part of the torque.

Very cool idea for a rc vehicle. You will need a sprung tensioner. There’s a reason all cars have them for engine belts. And if you want it extremely easy way to add steering bring the points where the steel rods connect to the skate mounts closer to the fulcrum

Nice! Works well for a first attempt! Reminds me of a snowmobile but for ice, so an Icemobile...? Removing the flex from the frame would definitely help with the chain coming off and moving the steering holders towards the middle would decrease the turning radius. Let's see a version 2!

Cool vehicle. Some weight over the front might help your steering authority quite a bit, as would wider spacing or tilting of the front 'feet'. Certainly worth adding a bit of wood or something next to the lipo to stop the chain ripping chunks out of it over time.
