So this is my attempt at using a 3D-printer to make a working, radio controlled, truck.
Or truck chassis, whichever.
Just thought it'd be fun to experiment with gears and see if I could get it to work, and I've wanted an RC car for a long while!
Big thanks to KristianF88 for donating the wheels, motor and a bunch of other various parts to this project!

That's awesome! Those plastic gears need a light greasing, including the differential. Also the transfer case needs to be closed to keep out dirt, and stuff.

Please continue the project and show us when it is finished. I too am building my own 3d printed rc car and this gives me inspiration to keep going. I am trying to achieve a bearingless and almost 98% 3d printed parts, just like yours with a 3d printed shaft. I am planning to have a multilink suspension. Thanks for the vid, and eager to see the final product.

+3D Printwiz The project is continuously being updated, I'm aiming to get at least a few hours of work into it every week. All the model files are more or less done but I'm printing revisions and trying to get everything as good as possible whilst attaining a high level of print-ability on regular FFF printers. Currently working on the cab that'll house all the electronics :) Sounds like a cool project, I hope you can make it work! The less hardware needed, the easier it'd be for everyone to use.

This is very amazing. It is so cool to see what people come up with and can do with 3D printers. I've wanted a printed so a long time, and I was planning on printing parts for my RC car, but I've never thought of this before. You are a very smart man.

You should try putting grease designed for plastic gears onto the gears in the gearbox, and inside the rear diff, it would quiet things down and the gears will run smoother and cooler.

Have you thought of doing a couple of 3d printed links for the front axle?
@MrCrankyface
@MrCrankyface 7 жыл бұрын
I've been experimenting with 3d printed links on my current project, the buggy. Unfortunately I find them quite lacking. If you try to make them tight, they have too much friction when moving. If you make them slack enough to not have excessive friction, they have way too much slack. I'm not done testing yet though so I might find a way of making them that actually works for regular use but it would require a highly calibrated printer.
@Jakefrc
@Jakefrc 7 жыл бұрын
I did think that friction could be an issue. Perhaps a connecting mechanism similar to a 4x4 trailer hitch or similar to your drive shaft universal with metal pins would get around that issue, however the parts then do start to become bulky. I will have a look at your buggy as well. This truck is nothing short of incredible.

Great work! which material did you used for gears and differential?
@MrCrankyface
@MrCrankyface 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I've printed the gears(in gearbox and differential) in Colorfabb XT since it's more wear-resistant and has low friction when rubbed against itself. You could probably get away with printing them in PLA though, especially if you have a lower RPM motor. The motor being used in my videos of the truck is doing a whooping 12500 RPM @ 8.4V, under load.

Hi! I'm sorry I have no idea, I've never tried it. My best tip is to google for reviews of the printer if it's good or not. To print this project it needs a size of 20cm in X and Y.

That's really cool, I want to do similar projects as I am in the rc hobby too. I want a 3D printer for at or under $300 I can handle building it if it's a kit And I can learn to design parts. But is that budget gonna get me a decent one? I've read that the printers that print in layers are less durable. I would appreciate your thoughts because I'm just starting to research printers
@MrCrankyface
@MrCrankyface 8 жыл бұрын
Pretty much all 3D printers print in layers, but they do it differently. I use a FDM/FFF printer which melts plastic string/rope to build up layers 0.05 to 0.3mm thick until it reaches the thickness it wants. Depending what plastic you use(there's a big variety to choose from) your prints will have different characteristics. If you for example print with nylon filament the prints will be very strong whilst if you print with cheap PLA plastic they'll break for a lot less. A lot of parts on this truck is cheap plastic though and it seems to hold up just fine when designed and used correctly. For a cheap budget printer I'd recommend looking at Duplicator I3/Prusa I3 or something similar, they have a reliable design and you get a lot for your money, there's also a lot of people who have them which means it's easier to find help when they start acting up(any printer will have issues from now and then, just like any machine).

I would sell all the printable parts, the rest just becomes too much of a hassle to source(usually 1 month delivery from where I order parts, then another month to get it done to customer). All files and links can be found on thingiverse/Youmagine and you can take those files over to 3Dhubs and basically order it.
