I know some VI teachers who are going to be so excited about your Braille cell clicker. The existing products that are purchasable for blind students aren’t inexpensive when compared to the cost it would be to print your, shall I say 'fabulous' model? I think I shall! I'm going to print up some and give them to my daughter's teachers. They will be thrilled. I'll have her bring them in and surprise them. They will be absolutely perfect for the kindergarten students learning the Braille alphabet, plus many other applications I'm sure They'll discover for them. The clicking feature will just make it all the more fun and make learning fun. Also, I can’t leave this message without saying I’m so sorry to hear about your Thingiverse woes, It's sad to lose all the legacy and history you had there.

That would be wonderful! I hope the Braille cells prove useful (and fun)! Apparently a lot of 3D printing history is being lost - the original Benchy post on Thingiverse was also hit :(

@@3DPrinty Oh, that is sad indeed. That was 3D printing history of a model printed by nearly everyone with a 3D printer; an unrivaled achievement. I wasn’t overly angry with the data leak, perhaps I should have been, but the deletion of designer's models however has changed that.

Even if I won't be posting to Thingiverse, part of me remains hopeful that they may restore some of the projects. They're not really deleted... just hidden and inaccessible. All it takes is someone to review and un-hide the data.

Maybe it's too late for you, but there is a function on the Prusa Printers site allowing to automatically import all your Thingiverse models entirely with description and everything with only a few clicks. As far as I know, Thangs offers it as well, so it can simplify the switch for you and others considerably.

This is a very good tip! I Imported a few projects this way, but I was a bit picky about how the import tools altered my formatting. So I ended up giving myself a lot more work! That was before the designs were removed, of course. I suspect that the import function wasn’t an option in this case.

If you can come up with a way to make Braille cells at standard size, for under about $30/cell, you can revolutionize braille tools. Also if you can manage to get them compact and flat; there are whole classes of devices that are currently not possible. Somebody came up with a design that only used one motor; not one per pin. I think it's viable on 6-dot braille (64 positions), but computer braille 8-dot needs 256. All of my 3D printing projects are braille related. I learned scad making highly parameterizable braille templates; to create impossible-to-buy 8-dot computer braille templates, micro-braille, etc. Now, I am working on building custom iPhone cases, to put a braille keyboard on the back of the iPhone case. I ran into this trying to get ideas for how to 3D print the flattest possible key switches; to make the case into a virtual kwerty keyboard (ie: chorded, braille layout). The idea is a braille keyboard that even sighted people would use in normal non-blind mode.
@3DPrinty
@3DPrinty Жыл бұрын
I'm always glad to hear about 3D printing projects that make a difference. If you're able to get that case idea to work, it sounds like it would be incredibly useful! As for this design, I don't expect it would scale down to standard size too well, but with a resin printer, the right type of resin (s), and an altered mechanism (maybe something like a rubber band to hold the pin positions), I can see how it'd be possible to get the width and height down to that scale. The depth of each cell, however, would still be pretty thick - at LEAST 4 times the travel distance of the pins used to form the braille dots. Of course getting that to be motorized is a different issue entirely.
@rrr00bb1
@rrr00bb1 Жыл бұрын
@@3DPrinty I just finished getting a Keybow 2040 programmed to turn braille into ASCII internally, but lol Circuit Python runs out of stack space when I try to make a keycode map. A phone with earbuds listening if you cant see, with a tactile keyboard is a common actual-blind setup. (No braille display, but audio, and braille input). The braille keyboard layout is a good layout for small devices, because 16 key keyboard is just fine for that.

i made something similar to that slide mechanism for mounting my print head, basically it snaps in and i just tighten one screw, i am going to look at modifying mine to use your spring, cause i find mine gets a bit loose, unless all screws are tightened right down, and i really want that snap action!
@3DPrinty
@3DPrinty 2 жыл бұрын
I like the idea - I hope that works out! You may want to try some test prints with the stiff version of the spring. If that's too loose, you may be able to scale up just the spring's width to get an even stronger hold.
