On the 20th of April, 2024, we had a work party at the Mill Brook Railroad, where we changed out a bunch of ties and installed some experimental 3d printed tie plates.

acrylonitrile gives rigity, 1,3-butidiene flexibility along with the styrene. the styrene is brakes down with UV wave length from the sun. that is the only weak link with long term sunlight exposure. with plastic tie plates you need that balance of being flexible and rigid , too ridged it will be brittle under force of the train and fail by cracking or brake out around screws. nylon with carbon fibers is like fiber glass , the polymer reinforces the glass fibers to make a strong repair. great video great job guys!

Here’s a trick we do at Riverside live steamers. On rails if you have a big gap be rails we take a peace of rail and cut to fit tree and rail joint it in the joint holds the peace you can use track screws to hold it it helps from hammer rail heads

You need to place a strip on the plates that can hold down the rail. A lip sort of deal that runs parallel to the rail. and slips into the outer bottom..

The hex washer head screws hold the rail and the tie plates both.

no crunch! just clicks! where is Mr. Bat cat track inspector? or his side kick Mr. T ! now you have just started your very own “environmental study” good luck with the new tie plates! they do make a huge difference in the holding power and stability.

If you're worried about sunlight ruining your tie plates, hit em with a UV resistant spray paint before installing them. I'm reasonably sure rustoleum make a UV resistant primer of an appropriate colour.

I wanted to start with a baseline to see what kind of problems would arise without a coat of paint on the tie plates. I plan to paint another batch and see what the difference is.

30:04 you can actually see that the front axle of Grandma’s Porch had ridden up the side of the rail. I’m starting to think that axle might be out of gauge…

May be different styles, 2 and 4 holes ? Wider to have more materials around holes ? What type of plastics are use outside like plastic balcony or house sheating ? Good time to experiment. You´ll be busy enough in 2024 with track and enginehouse removal to test these before the new build branch to come.

Looking very good.🙋‍♂😉 I think the tie plates should help. Wonder which type will work the best? Many hands make short work.😎 Thanks I've been waiting for a chance to use that phrase.😉

Im curious and right off admit my lack of knowledge so here goes: It seems to me that the screw heads used to hold the rails down dont extend very much over the flanges. Has anyone experimented with using thick flatwashers under the screws or larger screw heads to improve rail securement?

Yes we use dry wall screws with washers, they rust in time and get stuck in place. We also use 2x4 instead of 2x2 ties they dont walk like 2x2 will.

The hex washer head screws we're using already do the job well.

Can't you put a tie plate underneath the guide rails like they do on the regular railroad?

I need to design the right tie plate for guard rails. The ones I have won't work with the guard rail.

Hope you paid them double time for working the night shift ! Remembering that double nothing is still nothing ! The tie plates seem to work fine. Those that say that they won't last may have eat their words. Some folks are only happy when they are mocking someone else, and when they have nothing to mock, that is when they are unhappy. Regards, Paul - in slightly sunnier Cornwall U.K.

Being outside, the screw heads will move laterally in the wood over time with weather changes if they're not supported by something. The tie plates tie the screws together around the rail in the same way the ties tie the rails together. Washers under the screw heads don't provide the same support.
