3D Printing: Splitting a model in Cura (Sort of) the cheaty way

3 жыл бұрынA quick tip/workaround for splitting models in Cura before printing, please note this only works to split a model into two parts and results will vary depending on the shape of the model you wish to print.
NOTE: I made an error with my calculations here that meant I lost a small bit of the model, luckily it didn't affect the final piece much and it came out ok but don't do what I did and it should work great!

Simple and helpful. Lowering the model further can also reduce the need for support, instead of splitting in half.

your measurements are wrong your calculator first read 40.59555 and you entered 40.9555

I did spot that but only after the edit/upload, luckily the print came out fine and the difference wasn't really noticeable

Here would be better to turn model in 90º first, and after that split it.

I want to cut it so it fits on the build plate so i can slice it And also sometimes when I put slacks some of the model is clear meaning if i start to print it wont print that part

Cool, always nice to have more tools ... but you kept typing in the wrong number so I hope this split was just for demonstration or your spider is going to be missing a bit of body ^ ^

Hahaha, well spotted, noticed the half split was off by .00005 (cura only allows for .xxxx digits and I needed .xxxxx) after I'd uploaded, I went with the off center split in the end which was accurate so it's all good

on a print that size I doubt the .00005mm difference would have been noticeable but it is always better to be accurate, especially in an instruction video so apologies for that :)

@@MiniPaintingPunk Mate you calculated 5.59 but used 5.95, so you were off by .36 lol. Was hoping you'd notice before the end of the video but hopefully the print still came out okay, this video was very useful!

Some of them I can't get the full scale of my 3D print it says up to 250 mm height and 220 wide but I can't get that

I used this and the concept works fine in cura, but by the time I'm printing it only prints a tiny bit of the wall. Not the model. Is the file corrupted or am I doing something wrong?

I didnt know this was possable, i went to meshmixer and blender 3.6 and all they would do is freeze. I upgraded my ram to 32gb and still nothing changed. I was about to upgrade my CPU to 58003dx just to make a slice on a mesh. But now I can hold off. thank you

what are the other ways to split? wouldn't it be easier to split it and print both halves side by side?

If you're familiar with other programs yes, there is currently no way to do that directly in Cura so this is just a simple workaround for those that aren't familiar with/don't have access to other programs (such as Meshmixer) in which to split it

What version of Cura do you have? As far as I can remember those options have always been there for me as soon as I click the model

split it down the middle and lay the flats on the bed and print the whole thing in one with no supports

I understand your hesitation, all I can say is that it works for me and I use it all time on larger models, what has been interesting is that a few people have told me that their Cura won't let them print the model at all if it is sunk below the build plate like this, I honestly have no idea why this is the case, if it's a specific setting that allows me to do this I have no idea where to find it. I haven't to this date had any reports of this causing damage to anyone's printer but I would be genuinely upset if this video caused anyone to damage their printer so if you are worried maybe look using a 3rd party program like Meshmixer to split your model instead

Sorry to hear that, what printer are using? Could it be that your printer works slightly differently than mine (Ender 3) in how it uses that data, mine just doesn't print anything that's below zero on the Z axis so just starts wherever I sink the model to

@@MiniPaintingPunk any cubic mega x. Now I can’t even have parts below build plate in cura. Now I been cutting models in mesh mixer and loading in cura because I can’t get cutting tool in cura.
