3D PRINTING Super Mario - How SMOOTH can we get him?

Testing the limits of the 3D-printer, trying to make an ultra smooth Super Mario. For a long time I've wanted to apply some of the things we have done when doing console modding to 3D-prints to see how nice figures it can make, and it turns out surprisingly good. Im really happy we did this, and I'll most def make more of these in the future.

Super happy with this 3D printer, it's the creality CR-10.
I got this code for 16% discount if you are interested: 3DPrinter

You can clearly see how the paint have dried "runny" and is probably coated too thick and wet (look at the pants under the right button), quantize the paint to thinner layers would be the proper way, plus if you want a deep gloss, than polishing the paint before and after clearcoat is a good idea.

Always..ALWAYS print vertical when possible. You may need to cut your model if its too big, but it allows you to put support in a better distribution pattern, goes off easily and leaves less noticeable marks to clean up later. It also gives a better finishing, since horizontal lines give more resolution

Hey, hope you're doing great! I asked Banggood for a better discount code that I could share with you, and I got one that can be used 30 times to knock of 120$ on the Creality CR-10. If any of you guys are interested the code and the link to the printer it applies to is below. Only first 30 can get it though, so if it isn't working let me know and I'll remove it. Cheers! You should try poster tack/adhesive putty in the future. Miniature painters use that to mask off layers, with more control. Plus it's reusable, so you won't have to keep using bits of tape all the time!

Very nice! If you really want to make it crystal shiny, wait about a month for the clear coat to completely dry, then use the Tamyia polishing compounds (coarse/fine/finish) then modelling buffing wax.

Hey a friendly suggestion for removing supports. If you get a wood burning kit, they often include an exacto blade that heats up. This way you can cut your way through. Watch out for fumes, and use in a ventilated area. You might like a sawdering gun as well as a different option.

You could have printed in ABS and then given the print an acetone vapor bath. Did you consider that option?
@Nerdforge
@Nerdforge 6 жыл бұрын
Yes! I have never done it, but it looks awesome! Anyway, with only PLA available this is what I went for. Also after the rough support material cleanup I would need to take the same steps with ABS as well.

If you mess around with print settings in simplify 3d about support structures you can get a "tear-away" style support structure, the best method is to make a small test model and make procedural tweaks in the settings until you find the perfect settings for your printer. Your paint skills are unreal though, keep doing what what you do best.
@SocratesAlexander

Two advices: 1) Always do a close up shoot of your printouts. 2) While painting, use "masking fluid" instead of painter's tape.
@maammoos5377

For easier support removal, try adjusting the support interface distance or whatever it is called in your slicer. This allows the model to adhere less to the support. On any dual extruder printer, you could of course use PVA or hips for the interfaces between support and model, saving on expensive material and giving you the ability to just throw your model in water or limonene and your support will come off literally all by itself.
@justoneofthesheep
@justoneofthesheep 6 жыл бұрын
To get support to remove easier = I don't know what slicer your using but If your using Cura changing the 'top support distance' (distance from the top of the support to the print). It should be pretty much called the same thing threw out other slicers. you may need to dig around as some slicers don't show it and it will mean you going into the settings and finding it. It will be in the 'Support' section... If you increase this tolerance slightly it will help. keep increasing until the supports come off clean. mine was at 0.15 at first and I had your problem . I increased it until 0.2 and now supports remove with ease . Hope this helps .
@MrPoporucha
@MrPoporucha 5 жыл бұрын
I guess that small small distance in the bottom-top of support setting is because cura expects you to be using a dual extruder with different filaments

You ought to put the tape on smooth and flat, if your bed is heated then you wont need to spray on any adhesives for PLA to stick. The advice to use builders tape is definitely worth mentioning for those new to 3D printing, but please don't copy the application as shown in the video. A good first layer and minimal use of supports is well worth the effort it takes to apply a good build surface.

A tool to remove support better and easier doesn't exist :( but you can try to fudge the slicer, with the support shape (line/accordion removes easier than grid) and increase offset, which will make supported surface rougher but support easier to pull off.
