Nice tech. Her option B is unnatural. Directing your head where the 'danger' is while you're sleeping, the street & mother nature. Imagine a thunderstorm and you're right underneath a highest point of the roof there, or even just a hail storm.

What would be the chance of one of you guys doing a segment on how to replace/repair deck steps? I have a couple sets of steps on my deck that i'm going ot need to replace and I could use your advice on it. Thanks.

It would be great if you buy it with a stand and an app that shoot out flash from the camera and the sensor capture the reflected beam and do real time modeling. With extra option we can shoot out infrared and alpha beam that show electrical and plumbing design too.

I would like to know exactly what 3D scanner used Brand & model and maybe a link to the website a person could look at these with. Saying you used a 3D scanner in general is not good enough to guess at. I look forward to doing some projects.

Thanks for sharing. Great production and very topical. My question is can it be used on the exterior of a building? It is working on the interior but could it also work to map the neighbourhood? I am a woodworker and I happen to be working on my apartment makeover and so this has got me very excited. My short term objective is to decorate the apartment for my family and this goes as deep as chasing electrical wiring, sockets etc to plumbing. I am using SketchUp with "matched photos" and it is paying dividends in time and material savings. This new $500 tablet add-on has multiple applications for 1) interior decorating, and 2) as an artificial intelligence tool.

Hi Jeff! I recommend checking this out: canvas.io/support/can-i-use-structure-sensor-outdoors. The short answer: sort of. We have definitely seen people use it, but you'll want to scan at dusk or on an overcast day to minimize the interference of sunlight with the sensor's infrared projector.

I reckon it would be very easy to make the measurements 100% accurate. If you could take one measurement manually and input that into the software, it should be quick and straightforward for the software to calculate the discrepancy and then adjust every measurement accordingly. To put it another way, once the software has an accurate reference of the 'real world' size of an object in its sights, it can extrapolate all of the other measurements from that reference.

I like Google's Project Tango technology much better, if only because it's more easily extensible by programmers. If the TOH folks haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend giving it a look.

Stck E, project tango is the same technology, but implemented differently. Project tango uses your tablet or phones camera. With this, you have the camera separately, it's not built in. So you can use it on non Android device, and Androids that doesn't support tango.

I'm assuming this segment was "filmed"/recorded long ago. Project Tango would be a much more up to date generation of this idea. Using an Asus AR or Lenovo Phab 2 you would be able to do this in real time using AR.

Hi Mark! Canvas (the product shown) was actually announced in November 2016. Mobile 3D scanning has been around for several years now (the Structure Sensor, the sensor used by Canvas, was announced in 2013, pre-dating Tango), but it is only very, very recently starting to permeate into real-world projects at the residential scale. One reason is that the process to take the data generated from a 3D scan (the white mesh you see first on the tablet) into design programs like SketchUp used to be very complicated, time-consuming, and error-prone. When we launched Canvas, we included a built-in Scan To CAD service that makes it turnkey, and that has been the driving force for a lot of firms and individuals bringing 3D scanning into their workflow for the first time. If you want to learn more about this, I recommend reading: blog.sketchup.com/article/meet-canvas-3d-home-scanning-everyone

It is my understanding that this piece of equipment was discontinued a long time ago by the manufacturer (3D Systems). Why is TOH showing something that might not be supported and is years out of date? These technology segments always seem to be too little too late or for things you can't even purchase as an individual (Robotic Wall). How about some up to date videos on things most homeowners can buy that are tried and true or new offerings from established companies. Amazon Echo, Crestron/Control4 home automation, Ecobee, or even full videos on piecemeal home automation solutions (Lutron, etc), I'll even volunteer my home!

what Ross and Alex were using was called Structure, manufactured by Occipital [structure.io/]. Alex did say a couple hundred dollars, but I checked and the price is more like b/w 379$ for just the attachment that you see to 499$ for the device plus software bundle. your main point is worth considering, however. Ross Trethewey and the producers of Ask This Old House try to show the most exciting new devices using smart technology. they really try not to be behind or ahead of the curve for the average consumer, but that can be hard line to stay within, sometimes. we'll take a look at your suggestions, and perhaps they'll be covered in our next season. thank you, John B!

Very helpful, thank you, that device on his iPad looks identical to the one I mentioned but must have missed it in the video where it was articulated. If anyone here has any experience with the tool, would love to hear about it before I considered one for purchase.

Hi John! The iSense was discontinued, which was a version of the same hardware sold by 3D Systems. The Structure Sensor itself is very much still in production, and it's the sensor used by Canvas on the program. Drop us a line at support@canvas.io and we'd be happy to answer your questions or share info about other use cases we've seen that might match your own.
