3rd Gen Tacoma DIY CMC | 285/70/17, "33s" on a Manual TRD Pro Thoughts

I finally decided to upgrade my wheels and tires. The forums led me to believe that I could run 285/70/17s aka 33s without any issue. That's far from the truth. In this video, I fabricate my own plate for a cab mount chop on my 2017 Toyota Tacoma.

im running the same size tire on my 3rd gen 17x8.5 -10 285/70/17. Didnt have to cmc, even without alignment. im on a 3" lift. did an alignment a week later and maxed out the caster forward. now i have a little more than a 1/4 inch space from the cab mount and a little rubbing on the front passenger inside liner when reversing. For 35s ill be doing the CMC mod for sure. But hey its always good to see how CMCs are done. Nice vid

Have you gone off road with your truck? Do they rub on the Cab mount? I’m getting mixed reports about 33s on the forums and videos. I want to avoid it because 33s is the max I want to go and I been reading it’s not necessary with an aftermarket UCA

@@coffeetruckco yes I been to couple trails around my area. No cab rubbing, just the front inner liner. Im running stock UCAs for now. Will upgrade soon to uniballs just for better articulation

Great video! I have a 2 door Rubicon with a manual transmission, running 305/70/17 on 17x9, full roll cage. I drive it like a trophy truck and it’s resulted in big $$$. I was thinking of switching to a manual Tacoma, and your video provided some useful information 👍

I hate to break it to you but if you had ordered the correct wheels you would not have to do the cmc. your offset on your wheels is wrong. Stock rims are a 7.5 wide rim so when you go to a wider rim like you have you have to put a negative offset on the rim to get the proper backspaceing and avoid the need for a cmc my rims are even a bit wider than your at 9 inches but they have a -12 offset witch gives you the same backspacing as a stock rim eliminating the need for a cmc.

Do you think there would be rubbing with these methods in a 16x8 zero offset size with 265/70R16 tires on stock suspension?

I'm not sure, depends on your model. I was running 265/75/16 on my stock TRD Pro without rubbing.

Regearing your diff will bring your mpg back above 18mpg if you are a 70-75 mph driver.

Why not to have kept it all original stock? when these trucks get butchered they become an eye sore... Grinding banging cuting under the well is a horrible receipe for disaster...

I have a 2022 trd pro Tacoma in manual. Just put 285/75r16s and it only rubs at full lock. I guess I’m lucky? Anyways it’s such a fun truck. How do you like yours? What are your negative thoughts on it?

Mine did the same on full lock until I did the CMC. I go off road pretty often so doing this was peace of mind.

So this was on a stock truck? No lift? What if you went with a more narrow 33 inch tire? Like a 255/85?

Stock truck. Didn't try narrow tires, plus I like the look of wider tires. Also, I'm preparing ahead of time for 35s.

Flex seal? Use rubberized undercoating...it's not the same thing..

I saw that response on tacomaworld and it seemed like only specific shops were recommended. Instead, I figure I'd just do the CMC to prepare for 35s down the line.
