The United States Army's 3rd Infantry Division was one of the most storied and decorated units of World War II, playing a key role in many of the major campaigns and battles of the war in Europe.According to the United States Army Center of Military History, the Third Infantry Division suffered a total of 19,256 battle casualties during World War II, including 3,504 killed in action, 14,584 wounded in action, and 1,168 missing in action.
Here are the major campaigns and operations of the United States Army's 3rd Infantry Division during World War II, listed chronologically by start date:
Algeria-French Morocco (with arrowhead)
Tunisia: November 8, 1942, to May 13, 1943
Sicily Campaign: July 10 to August 17, 1943
Salerno Landing: September 9 to 21, 1943
Anzio Campaign: January 22 to June 5, 1944
Rome-Arno Campaign: January 22 to September 9, 1944
Southern France Campaign: August 15 to September 14, 1944
Rhineland Campaign: September 15, 1944, to March 21, 1945
Ardennes-Alsace Campaign: December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945
Central Europe Campaign: March 22 to May 11, 1945

Belgian Fourragere 1940 for service in Belgium during World War II (September 4, 1944 to February 10, 1945)
Belgian Croix de Guerre 1940 with Palm for service in Belgium during World War II (September 4, 1944 to February 10, 1945)
Luxembourg Croix de Guerre for service in Luxembourg during World War II (September 10, 1944 to December 25, 1944)
Netherlands Orange Lanyard for service in the liberation of the Netherlands (September 13, 1944 to May 8, 1945)
It's important to note that some awards may have been presented to individual soldiers within the Third Infantry Division, rather than to the division as a whole. Additionally, this list may not be comprehensive, as there may be other awards or recognitions that are not included.
Rock of the Marne": This nickname was earned during World War I, but was carried over to the 3rd Infantry Division during World War II as a symbol of the division's toughness and resilience.
"Blue and White Devils": This nickname was also used during World War II, and reflected the division's blue and white shoulder p"atch.

My Grandfather served in the 3rd Div in Italy, (Anzio Campaign) in which he was wounded in battle. Carried a hunk of German Shrapnel inside him till the day he passed. Since it was extremally close to his spine. Great information.

My grandfather served in North Africa, Messina and Anzio with the third infantry in ww2 as a 17 year old man. Strongest man I’ve ever met, this action still really affected him for his life. His medals that I saw where the bronze star, purple heart and the combat.

The Third Infantry Division has received 61 Congressional Medals, of Honor more than any other Division in the Army.

I served in 2ID from 1 SEP 89 to 19 DEC 90. I reenlisted while in 2ID in Korea at Camp Garry Owen while a CAV Scout in 5-17CAV. This may sound funny, but I had the most fun in 2ID then I did in any until I was in during my 13 years of service. I enjoyed the field problems whether during the winter or summer. I was also promoted to Seargent E-5 while in Korea and became the Track Commander of the Platoon Seargent's M113A2. I learned a lot about tactical operations while I was there. I went back in 92 but went to Camp Page near Chun Chong assigned to 8th Army, I hated that time in country.

My great great grandfather that i got to meet i live with for 10 years before he passed in 99 had almost every medal shown in this video and we have those medals.

Audie Murphy was a true 100% American Hero!! We Europeans are eternally grateful to him and their division for their efforts to drive the Germans out of occupied territory. To Hell and Back.

You have one of 3ID’s Regiments wrong on the video. At 4:53 You said the last crest was 30th inf reg. The one you are showing is the 38th inf reg. 30th inf reg motto is “Our Country Not Ourselves.” The the 30th crest is basically circular and has a battle boar on top of it.

You forgot that the 65th Infantry Regiment was also with the Division. Although they were first a replacement regiment, the 3rd Bn. went to fight in France when they got to win the 4th arrowhead. Also, you didn't mention the American Defense Medal, issued to ALL personnel wether they were in combat or not.

Dear Sir, My father was 3rd Army 15th infantry regiment in WW2. He pointed out with 156 points after the invasion of Germany. I have two questions: He was awarded a bronze star for his actions at Normandy, along with 750 other soldiers. The newspaper clipping I found said he was with the 1st army, which has confused me to this date. Were the 3rd and 1st together at Normandy? The second question is that both He and a newspaper clipping said he was awarded the silver star for actions in Germany. He never received the medal upon discharge. Some 20 years later, he requested his metal but was given a bronze star. Could you answer these questions for me, please. Thank you, and thank you for your service.
