This is great....thank you!! I made the adjustable one yesterday. The only thing I'd say (this is my fault) I didnt use glue at first, and just hit the fence/spacer with brads, then came back with countersunk screws - that really torqued the fence and was making it wavy/not straight (I think because that piece is already compromised due to the 1/4" slot)...so that was bound to give me a crooked juice groove. So I removed the screws, pulled the brads out, then came back did it again with glue this time, and I clamped the fence against a straight edge while the glue dries. Undecided whether I'll add the screws or not after the glue cures...but everything is definitely nice and straight now

OMG! I saw your 3rd router option tries and I thought, “I wonder if the fence you made hung down more on the side of the board…if dowels were inserted to help guide the router and follow the board edge?” !!! You deserve a lot of respect for showing work that you try but leave the normal errors off the final video posted. That is still part of these processes and still gives important information to people wanting to learn from techniques in video demonstrations. subscribed.

I have been watching your channel and was trying to pick up the first project for starting woodworking. This seems like the simplest one to start. I only had a circular saw before, now got a trim router, got this exact boards from Lowe’s, and made cutting boards. After applying oil and conditioner, these came out amazing! After first round of putting mineral oil, I sanded with 320 to make it smooth again.

Regarding method 4 using the edge guide- I think it would work better if you reversed this- put the router in a router table and manuever the board against the fence on top of the table. I liked your idea of the 2 large dowels in the edge guide. It might work even better if you could put wheels or rollers on the edge guide. However with all of this work just to get an acceptable result- most cutting boards would work better with one of your other methods. The only advantage to the edge guide is that you could more easily follow the edge of a cutting board with a complicated shape.
@Sugarfoot108
@Sugarfoot108 Ай бұрын
A top pro gave me good advice to always replace that dewalt base plate with a universal round plate for jig work. That avoids to issue of having to be careful on rotating the router as you turn the corners. On the failed attempts to follow an internal template, it would be better to add a support block to the router base the same thickness as the workpiece. I would use a 5/8” guide bush for this method to make it much easier to follow and keep the radius acceptably smaller.

I tried this with my trim router edge guide and it was awful. Absolutely wrecked my piece I was testing on. Thank God it was a scrap. I wound up free handing very slowly on a slow speed setting with refrence marks on my base plate. Also using my finger as a slide guide. Not the smartest thing I know but worked very well and the boards came out beautifully. But I love that 4 piece take down jig.. definitely going to build something similar for my set up! Love your content!

I don't want to sound like a shill, but I ended up buying the Microjig Match Fit Dovetail Clamps (4 of them, which is about $90), then cut a large platform and routed a dovetail grid for the clamps. Then, attached 2 L-shaped fences at the edge, then 2 floating ones that are attached with the dovetail clamps. I just drop a board in, slide the floating fences into place, clamp down, then route. Super easy. I've also found other uses for those dovetail clamps so at least they aren't permanent to the cutting board jig.

If you do the first method... make sure your base plate is actually centered. I did this method a while back and it was a mess, didn't realize why until recently when I went to use bushing guides and found that my base plate wasn't actually centered. Between the base plate not being centered and me not using the same part of the plate against the fence the entire time because the base plate is a circle, the juice groove was all over the place. Side Note: The edge guide works great for a square/rectangle board. You just need to make sure you stop at the corners rather than try to wrap around.

As someone who's been a chef for a decade and a woodworker making cutting boards for a year, the best juice groove is NO juice groove. They make the board harder to clean, harder to scrape prepped food into a pan, and reduce usable surface area. Don't bother making a jig that only reduces the functionality of your artwork. That said, I appreciate your project videos.

I'm no chef or woodworker (despite making cabinets, tables, dressers and having worked food service for nearly a decade in my early years and making 99% of the food my family eats) but I have to agree that less is more. I never put a groove on my end grain cutting board I made decades ago it remains just as beautiful and functional. I make end grain cutting boards every Christmas and always do research as I start them.

Love the jigs for juice grooves. I love how you have to keep in experimenting all the different ways you can get the same results. This stands you apart from the rest of the channels. A great differentiator. Good for you. My tried routing a juice groove in one of my cutting boards but started off going CCW and then had a groove running into the center of the cutting board. So I immediately made arrows on my jig showing the correct CW direction. All of the pieces have arrows going CW. To correct the error I made a juice reservoir from my error. This involved making a jig that would fit inside the original jig. It uses the routered slot to anchor the inside pieces and makes making the reservoir easy. Shot me a link if you want to see the photos. Keep up the exceptional good work.

I agree with you about using the Shaper Origin to cut a juice groove. I thought the Origin would make it easy, but when I tried, I failed miserably. The Origin often lost sight of the position dominoes, so it would give up on the cut. Your jig would solve that problem, but the simple juice groove jigs with a "normal" router are really a whole lot easier. The Origin does so many things that are difficult, if not impossible, using other methods, but it isn't the best tool for every routing operation. I agree that juice grooves are one of the things that are just more easily done in other ways.

Great video. Here is what I like about you videos like this. You first provide a simple quick way to get the job done. I don’t have to spend a lot of time building a jig to make the first cutting board. A person can get one done, then you can move onto doing it a better way, the adjustable jig with the slots. To get the rounded corners, I like your solution of placing a board in the middle and routing around it. It simple and works and a more complex solution isn’t needed. Like you said about the Shaper Origin, sometimes simpler is better.

The edge guide seems like the only option if you’re doing surfaces instead of rectangular. Solid design looking for the right application.

Curved edge guide would be a single post, preferably a tall thin bearing vertical riding along the edge of the board , but tough on the straight edges

first of all, I found your video very helpful & well put together. I made 6 chopping blocks for xmas, gave very little thought to how to do the juice groove. I ended up building the adjustable one you showed, with a few small changes: --I slotted the fences after attaching the base. This makes the part a lot more rigid & easier to hold going through the router. --I added I small strip of plywood to the top edge of my fence to help pull it in to straight. You think your plywood was wavy? I pulled mine out of my barn, probably been there 20-30 years. -I joined all the edges. prob not required if you get good parallel rips off the table saw...I do not. I also just became proficient using the joiner, so ask excuse to practice & lock down that muscle memory.

Really nice explanation. Some time ago I created a cutting board but was a little bit afraid of destroying my work in the last step the groove around therefore I only made grooves on every side. Now I could do better. Thanks👍😊

Great vid, as always. I have the same trim router and literally 15 minutes before this post I bought a completely circular base for it. Takes the worry out of possibly using the not-so-circular side of the base. Was $13 on Amazon, total no-brainer.

Nice project as usual, though I’d want a slopped grove to drain in catch area. Maybe a sloped surface under the board and same slope with cut slot oriented opposite on top to cut the groove?

Really clever adjustable jig. I think the "V" notch just needed a larger V.

Make some radius inserts for the ends of each arm of your jig. Attach them with double stick tape or a sliding dovetail joint. The radius of the inserts should be the radius of your router bit + the width of your edge gap + the offset of your router. You'll need to adjust the radius for the thickness of the tape. Make inserts of different radii for different bit & edge gap combinations.

Bravo Tamar, very creative. The first two I think are best, a temporary space jig for those who make a board on occasion, and the adjustable version for those who make cutting boards frequently.

Using an edge guide seems really simple. Draw a rectangle inside the edge of the cutting board, drill a hole to a certain depth on each corner of the rectangle with a depth stop, then use your router with the edge guide to connect the holes
