I heard the potato trick was used by the old timers with mercury panning, they would take the gold laden amalgam out of the pan, put it in a cavity inside a potato and throw the spud in the campfire. The mercury would evaporate off and collect in the potato flesh for possible reclaiming and the gold would be left as a bead in the cavity. From all accounts it was a highly profitable practice limiting exposure to mercury vapors which are deadly to basically everything. (correction, the gold would turn into a foil inside the potato cavity which was then rolled into a bead or ball).

If you wrap the gold pieces in a little tissue and cut off the excess to keep it together, it assists with melting it together quicker.

Hello Chris, I would place your gold dust in a piece of tissue paper, make a ball out of it ,soak in the paste of borax (use water or metho). It helps the gold fusing together ,regards George

Possibly silly suggestion: Batea pan with a lot of high-strength magnets at the deepest point. Those trap black sand, and the black sand traps gold ppreferentially. That's how the cleangold sluices work; magnets to trap magnetite, which acts as flexible riffles and traps gold (even micro-gold).

Your "pretty rock" at about 5:15 looks like an agate. That spectacular electric blue kingfisher is a con artist - it isn't really blue. It's feathers have an iridescence that fools the eye into seeing it's fairly plain brown plumage as that amazing blue. .
