When you break down each operation and write it down it is amazing how the estimate can get high, but it also allows you the option to show the customer what they will get. I always itemized what I was going to do, and that was how I made money. Lumping the job all together for one price was a sure way to underbid the project. Great Video

How do you recommend me on giving prices to clients in residentials hourly rate or by item like each boxwood or tree trimmed

The key is in really understanding your costs. Obviously cutting your overhead and being efficient opens the door for you to compete for more business. A lot of companies bid jobs that they really don’t make money on, when you factor in overhead, wiggle room for things to go wrong, weather problems, etc.

Hi Keith never commented or msg you but i want to let you know that 3 years ago i watched your videos every night for a month . I did that because i could relate to your story . I went from working lawns for a few years for others then got my own then to a tree service and was afraid to make the leap for so long but some of your videos really helped and i wanted to make sure i acknowledged at what point and made you aware . I noticed from watching that your not just about seeking notariety (mispelled) lol but you genuinely care about making ex employees future entrees aware of the trials and tribulations before they make the leap . Now my business is thriving and make sure to thank anyone who helped me to get to where i am .. Thanks again i am always checking on your page from time to time . keep doing what your doing it's appreciated

Property maintenance we call it, however it does fall under the Landscaping name. Landscaping (construction) side is your paving, retaining walls, pergolas etc. Still agree with your comment Alex, Keith is very relatable and friendly not to mention informative on all facets of running a Landscaping business.

Watch all of Keith's videos! Soo many golden nuggets in each video. Ive been working as a garden foreman for a reputable company in my area for the past few years. Im sick of busting my tail, producing quality work, just so my boss can be the one making all the money. Im sick of being told when to work, eat and sleep. This past weekend, after binge watching all of Keith's videos, I posted a garden maintenance ad on fb. I got bombarded with messages. I worked my first two side jobs yesterday and made $635! Not too bad for 10 hours of work. Find what your good at or take interest in and take action! Thanks for reading

Really appreciate the good content. I'm based in the UK and my business provides landscaping & garden design services & landscaping work. Personally I have a background in architecture and a thorough horticultural knowledge. I would say it is important for the landscapers on the ground to have a good knowledge of the plants they are dealing with so they can provide them with the correct care - e.g types of soil treatment to address acid/alkaline need or mineral uptake for the plant, how and when to prune to achieve certain outcomes, correct practice for cleaning pruning equipment between plants as not to spread disease through a garden etc - but they definitely should be able to identifying by sight and name every plant you are working with in order to do this. Great content all the same.

Great video! Prices are pretty good I live in Cleveland and all my prices are about the same. One thing i would suggest, especially since you have the man power, start contacting property management companies for over grown Cleveland/ Detroit houses I charge 300 to 600, no real skill involved great work for 10$ an hr labor. And then being a landscaper you have all the same equipment needed for trash clean outs. Also no.skill involved great for a good labor force

For the mulch- You charge $100 per yard installed. Does this price include all of the weeding, edging, and in some cases weed barrier fabric? I charge $15 + mulch cost per yard installed, but I charge for the bed preparation separately about $80/hour. Yes I know that is quite low, but it's hard getting work as a 15 year old.

Great advice, Maybe I am over charging for pruning? I always charge a hourly rate of $50, for timing (using my Stihl trimmer and Stihl hand hedge trimmers for fine clean up after I blow) or pruning with my pole pruner/ hand saw or power saw and pruning shears. Any Ornamental shrubs or Japanese lace leaf maples I charge $75.00 per hr because they are a lot more delicate and require more of an eye to do right. I tried to itemize but I feel that I am cutting myself short on time it takes me plus for hauling away all the debris. I like to look at a clean bush that has all the dead wood removed and possibility if a previous yard maint guy whos blows all the crap under the bush, (I hate that!) I like a tighty looking yard with plants that have room and a high and tight edging! I love my Stihl Bed Re-definer great tool then hitting it with a metal blade edger to get that crisp edge!!

I live in a duplex apartment and I am responsible for the grounds. I found a landscaper who was cutting the grass down the street. He came and looked at the job that needed to be done on the property. I need a MAJOR overhaul. This includes pulling weeds (they look like trees they are so bad) and trimming azalea bushes, cutting grass but pulling a whole lot of weeds. I have a tiny lawn in the front, I have a small yard in the back and an Island patch of grass plus the curb grass. The weed job is IMO a major project. He wants to charge me $800 which I thought was a fair price considering the work involved. My BFF in Florida (I live in Pennsylvania) told me that the price was outrageous. So, I am looking to see what the prices of landscaping are. So, I came on here and I think that the guy was more than fair with the price considering the work. I have no one in the family to do this work, plus I want it done professionally and of course, it's going to cost money. I disagree with my friend who believes that I am being over priced. It's hard work and I can't do this work, I have to pay someone. Plus I don't have the equipment and I don't know diddly squat about lawn care or even growing a plant. I am a city girl secretary, what the hell do I know about plants? Thanks for the video, I feel better knowing the prices of such work and feel safe that I am not getting ripped off. Thank you.

Question on Hedging: Weeds are worst enemy in my area. might have to start using weed mat on everything, which to me is not "natural" and it's not fool proof against everything like bulbs/tubers (i'm yet to try trippling the thickness). Anyway, I'm finding tree mulch a pest as birds love kicking it everywhere looking for imaginary worms. And here you rightfully say stones are annoying to clean off small trimmings. But what would you recommend to use under hedging if planting for yourself? Hmmm, Just bigger stones? (besides the fact you/we may now start to see stones as a financial gain rather than a hindrance). p.s. I for one had not thought of laying cover sheets down, I just blow it around or leave it messy as I don't enjoy or bother spending time trying to gather tiny stuff. So that idea is gold!

I never itemize. I do not nickle and dime others, and I don't let them nickle and dime me. It always comes down to price. If I itemize, the customer will believe that taking that off will lower the price. When asked how much it would cost if I only did (whatever), I tell them it will cost double what I quoted, because my guys would be working against muscle memory to do such crappy work.

Those shrubs you weren't sure about that was flowering is abelia. Plus I'm not too sure about those "burning bushes", I've never seen one as a tree form, let alone that big.

Is my yardwork "worth" what I quote? Yes. In every case. My yardwork is worth exactly what I quoted, because I am the one who will be providing it, and that is what it is worth to me. And, that is the only factor that is relevant. If you don't like my price, that's ok. Hire someone who charges less in cash, but more in headaches, hassles, and horror stories. And I begin to walk away...
