Isn't it just magnificent. I'm gathering by this interview that Gela took the reins in the decorating.

@@judyb1539Gela and her husband John Taylor made the brilliant decision to hire the genius Robert Kime to oversee the refurbishment and redecoration. But of course all such projects are collaborative.👍🏻

I loved this programme. I am a descendant of the Long family and it’s great to know more about them, I wouldn’t exist without them. Would love to actually visit the house.

How great these new owners did not make it modern (imagine the plumbing if it were to be turned into a hotel; the whole house would have to be stripped) but decided to use authentic furnishings that compliment the surroundings.

Ha! I was just shopping with a friend a few hours ago and had some juicy couture items in my hand and was telling my friend who the lady is and that’s she’s married to J.T etc, and now I watched this. What a coincidence! I had no idea they bought this splendid house. Good for them! And I love what they’ve done with the place. ❤️

Sir Henry Long was my 12x, Sir Robert my 11x & Sir Walter my 10x ggrandfathers. So 1st, I just want to thank you for sharing w/ me my family's history & showing me this incredible ancestral home. You did a fabulous job & it really touched my heart. Then can I say how shocked & saddened I was to hear that the last Long sold it un '65! Thank God that there is at least someone there now that has tried to preserve & keep it as it should be!!! I hope one day I may travel to England & see it (I would love to be able to walk the grounds & touch the walls my ancestors built - but now that it is a private home I prob would not be allowed to do so).

this was probably the most delightful revealed manor house in the series, mainly because it did not have that irritating and absurd hymn and choir music being played when the narrator entered the great hall or gushed about something. whoever is responsible for ruining an otherwise superb documentary with this totally out of place musical cacaophony should definitly be consigned to listening to a loop of it for eternity.

as an american that lived in the uK, i don't think most people realize how much $$$$$$ it takes to upkeep these homes. many are sold to be hotels or donated to National Trust. I love that she was walking around in her very high heels :)

Yep MJ H. Wasn’t that strange. Coincidence or the film crew having some mischievous fun. Oh and by the by the pipe smoke thing, I have experienced this rather strange phenomenon, we lived in a cottage where a shepherd, who had smoked a pipe, he smoked Condor Pipe Tobacco had lived but 25 to 30 years before. And one Day we smelt the unmistakable & characteristic aroma of Condor tobacco, none of us smoked a pipe & our only nebor didn’t smoke & our nearest nebors were miles away from us, it was very strange indeed, maybe the aroma from pipe tobacco has some mystical characteristic. Very very spooky indeed.

Terrific documentary. It's sad enough that these magnificent, long-held family estates are sold but to think that they end up in the hands of some tacky, uncultured, nouveau riche American is enough to make one feel quite ill. :-(

Actually, given the dubious origins of the Longs, it's rather fitting that it's ended up as it has, and the new owners seem to value it more than the last Longs did.

Excuse me for correcting. Just hope to soften your sadness. Gela's husband is a real Englishman from Birmingham (famous as 1 of the founders of one of the greatest British popbands Duran Duran). In his '20s he moved to the USA. So unless they sold it since this programm, the manor is in English hands. 🤗🇱🇺love from Holland (I once travelled accross your lovely country)

The house was decorated by Robert Kime he is the greatest British interiors expert his work at this manor is exceptional he also did a fine job of Clarence House. It is plainly bleeding obvious that the house has been restored in and out in the best possible authentic taste imaginable and the results are exquisite.... to even suggest an element of tacky and uncultured actually, says more about you than the owners!

Hmmm... its seems so sad that when the lady and her husband got married, they decided that they "could not" live there...so much of her history...hundreds of years. Well its those who have the gold spoon don't realise how fortunate they are...but on the other hand at least someone who has a appreciation for the history, the architecture could carry it on. But its still sad though that some other family member couldn't carry it on

Lovely presentation. I just hope that more English don't think of all Americans as being like Gela. I saw her on an episode of GORDON WATSON Wants Everything! (LOL, or whatever the show is called) and found her kind of typical "L.A.-ish".

I was going to say, being American, it is a privlege to be able to see something we just don't have, ancient houses, ancient history, but now I'm distracted by Gela's imitation of a goat- her cloven hooved boots, her utter lack of style, despite owing Juicy, she is the reason the English roll their eyes at Americans. Learn to articulate Gela- add some words to your vocabulary.- and bonus, David Najor's comments, while having nothing to do with this wonderful program, were quite entertaining. It's almost as if he speaks of witchcraft- no normal woman could possibly do those horrible things to a man, unless he allowed himself to be duped- stop being a victim David.

Well we don't have the ancient history they have--if something is 100 years old here it's viewed as ancient and should be torn down. I always wonder how and when modern fittings were added such as plumbing and electricity and central heating (I noticed a radiator in one of the rooms). Was gas lighting used in the 19th century?
@MikeGreenwood51
@MikeGreenwood51 7 жыл бұрын
Most likely gas lightning was in use in the 19th century as they had not until the 1880s electricity.
@basstrammel1322

+VictoriaJazz Yes, gas lighting would be installed no later than 1900. +Bets Hofsommer Nouveau riche is a kind of it's own, but some of them will be remembered as Wilhelm the Conquer in a 1000 years from now. Everything started from nothing, after all.

The only thing terribly interesting about an English country home is his architecture and its objects. I don't care about the history of the family just about their possessions.

I like the history of great houses in the UK. And therefore a lot of this series. But ... the nonsense about ghosts, haunting things etc. is irritating. Why should you give attention to supersticious, occult tales? A country with the most beautiful Christian heritage in churches, hymns and culture should be ashamed by including such rubbish in a serious documentary: A historic video unworthy in my opinion. But the rest of it is lovely to watch. Thank you for sharing. From Holland with ❤
