Thanks for this video. Now that I have seen the difficulties of replacing valve cover gaskets I believe I will take my 2005 F150 to a mechanic. I'm not even going to attempt this.

@@darkmoon1884 Sorry for the delay. Getting the cover off without removing the wiring harness to the left of the cover, mounted in front of the ac dryer made the repair harder. Thank you for posting this video, I have to pull off the passenger side valve cover to replace the lifters because of a bad lifter or two and replace the rocker arms. I was just wondering how hard it would be to get the valve covers off. The rockers and lifters will be a lot easier than it is to remove the valve covers.

Removing those valve covers is very difficult. Wash the engine as best you can before you do anything, especially between the manifold and the valve covers around the fuel injectors and the coil packs. Wash it with a high pressure washer or gas sprayer or brake clearer or whatever you have and don't be an idiot and blow off labels and insulation while you are at it. Be sure to roll up some paper towel wads to stick into the fuel injectors immediately after you unscrew the two bolts mounting the fuel rail above the injectors and pull the rail away from the injectors. Be careful not to mess with that electrical connection that is right by the heater return hose connection on the intake manifold. The only right way to work on a 5.4L in a pickup is to life the cab off the engine. Ford builds the engine, bolts it to the transmission, mounts them to the frame and then lowers the cab on top of it. Every hose clamp and hard-to-release electrical plug was connected with the engine sitting in the open. That is the reason you can't reach anything easily.

@@johnbrooks7144 thank you for telling me what to do to get to the lifters. I think that I will just replace them all on that side so that I don’t have to worry about doing that again. I have noticed how hard it is to get to a lot of stuff in the engine compartment. One of the worse one that I had to do was replace the O2 sensors. Bank one sensor one is the worst one I have ever had to change. The sensor clip is between the engine and the firewall and the location of the O2 sensor is just crazy. You can’t get a wrench on it and I even bought every one of the tools for changing the O2 sensors and they still didn’t have enough room to get any tool onto it. So do you have any ideas on how to replace that O2 sensor? (The passenger side front O2 sensor) any help with that one would be greatly appreciated. And thank you again for doing the lifter change. It’s going to be fun especially when I have a 6 inch lift and 35 inch tires.

yep its a completely different animal on the passenger side 5.4. It calls to discharge ac system. Its possible to snake it out if you bend the high-pressure ac line but its a pita. Removal 1. Recover the refrigerant. 2. Remove the RH variable camshaft timing (VCT) oil control solenoid. 3. Remove the powertrain control module (PCM) and bracket. 4. Remove the RH ignition coils. 5. Remove the nut and disconnect the A/C compressor manifold tube. ^ Discard the O-ring seals.

The big deal is how to keep that gasket in the groove of the valve cover. I have yet to see a video where anyone had a problem with the gasket sagging between bolt holes, but I did. The groove was absolutely clean and dry, washed out with solvent and then brake cleaner to remove all traces of solvent, dry right to the bottom of the groove. Fel-Pro says to lay the gasket on the valve cover and press straight down to lock the gasket in the groove. Nice try. It is a royal pain to install the valve covers and all the stuff that goes on top of the valve covers, start the engine, and discover oil leaking from the rear of the valve cover - especially on a customer's '03 F-150 when you have already spent way too much time because you keep finding things that should have been done years ago. Maybe that last pass over the cam bushing cap knocked it loose or whatever, but now the gasket will not stay put. So, just as a precaution, between the bolt holes of the valve cover, put some rtv on the outside of the valve cover - not in the groove but on the side of the gasket - and let it set up to glue the gasket to the valve cover and hold it in place. When installing the valve cover, do not allow the gasket to touch anything except the cylinder head when it is in place. If you hit something on the way down, take it back out and make sure you did not knock the gasket out of the groove, then do better the next time you maneuver the valve cover into place. I recommend Fel-Pro RTV too. The best rtv I have ever used comes with the gaskets in a Fel-Pro overhaul set.

@1018Video 2 жыл бұрын
Great comment! You're exactly right, it's best to use what you said to basically glue the gasket to the valve-cover and like you said, if you bump into anything bring it back out and make sure it's still in the correct position, it's well worth checking it out now before you have to pull everything back apart later to fix another leak! Thanks for giving the viewers some good information! And thanks for watching!

Everything about working on the 4.6 is pure aggravation. I replaced the EGR valve & the tube from it to the manifold not long ago, & it was a headache to get loose. Rear U-joints & valve cover gaskets are next.

Oil was leaking from the top part of the valve-cover into the spark-plug hole. Why would I lie about that? 🤣 🤣 🤣 It wasn't much oil, but the way a leak works is it'll only get worse.
