In this video I go over 4 of my favorite current R50 Pathfinder builds. These are 4 well thought out 1996-2004 Nissan Pathfinders that are used for what they were built for. They use different combinations of tire size, suspension lift, armor, and lockers, and they're all great examples of how you can decide on an R50 to buy and build out for off roading or overlanding. Each build comes from a different era of the R50, starting with the original 96-99 VG33E equipped R50's all the way through the refined late model VQ35 Pathfinders of the early 2000's.
These builds are proof of the reliability and off road prowess of the R50 Nissan Pathfinder and the Infiniti QX4, and I hope they give you some ideas on how to build and modify your own R50's for off-roading or overlanding.

Thanks for showing off the R50! I feel like it is an underappreciated truck! I've got a '99.5 R50 SE (basically a 2000) That in a previous life, was owned by the owner of my local Domino's Pizza. It was used as a winter beater/loaner/recovery vehicle for the delivery drivers (I live in the mountains in Colorado) So, it had a verrrrry rough life before I got it. It's got 220,000 mi on it now, and still runs great! There is a slight tick from a cracked exhaust manifold, and the shift between 1st-2nd is always slightly jerky, likely because of all the stop and go of delivery driving. I currently use it as my snow truck and adventure truck. It hauls me, my family, and a popup tent camper wherever we want to go in the mountains. It handles light to moderate 4x4 trails just fine, but I've broken the front bumper twice, so I'm going to install a high clearance front bumper from Coastal Offroad this winter.

I miss my '96 with AC 2" and 32" Cooper STT's , I did the Warn hubs and Powerstop brakes , all new poly bushings and Bilstein 5100's . It had the factory tire carrier , limited slip that worked great and 4.63 gearing . It was a sweet little ride . It had no body roll and handled great on the road , the tires surprised me , they were loud but stuck to the road . It was a good all around off roader and a great snow vehicle . Rust killed it in '17 , still ran like a champ .

Great video; I have been looking for an older model SUV recently and honestly hadn't considered an R50 until I saw a couple around town that really caught my eye. Before that in the Nissan Realm I was considering the R51 and Xterra; 4Runner or Sequoia and Lexus GX. One consideration I need to know; perhaps you can clarify is what the towing capacity may be. I currently have a 2011 Ford Escape that I am going to give to my kids and it doesn't have a hitch. I work with scouts and we have a limited number of people who can tow our 5 x 10 utility trailer when we go camp. I have towed it with my Ram 1500 which has a V6, but either don't want to use my work truck for that all the time or not as often until I get my own vehicle that I can go where I want. Thanks in advance; and once again these are some awesome builds.
@208Tyler
@208Tyler 3 жыл бұрын
It depends which engine you get. The 3.5 is higher than the 3.3. I would get the 3.5 for towing, which according to these google searches maxed out at 5000 lbs www.google.com/search?q=2003+pathfinder+towing+capacity&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari www.google.com/search?client=safari&hl=en-us&sxsrf=ALeKk03hY86ftEZ1Ibk4oqzKMdrnBXWvug%3A1609526561233&ei=IW3vX6XcDdLE-gTe0qCgCg&q=1999+pathfinder+towing+capacity&oq=1999+pathfinder+towing+capacity&gs_lcp=ChNtb2JpbGUtZ3dzLXdpei1zZXJwEAMyBwgAEEYQ-wEyBQgAEM0CMgUIABDNAjIFCAAQzQI6BAgAEEc6DAgjELACECcQRhD7AToICAAQCBAHEB46BggAEAcQHjoJCAAQQxBGEPsBOgIIADoECAAQDVC6GVi6LWDTMGgAcAF4AIABuwGIAasMkgEEMC4xMJgBAKABAcgBCMABAQ&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-serp

Your chinook does not have any factory lockers. Pictures of your locker switches would be appreciated, perhaps the previous owner put some in. It probably has a super weak rear LSD. Like, 30-40 ft lbs weak. Otherwise you are open/open in front and rear diffs.

Bieng a desert rat (Arizona) I want to do a long travel build, but was curious as to where I could go for good information and advice from others (or yourself) that are farther in the build process than I am. Maybe bounce ideas around. Thanks!
@208Tyler
@208Tyler 3 жыл бұрын
Don’t bother with anything short of completely swapping the front suspension. The front of the R50 has machperson struts, which is basically car suspension. There are no bolt on LT parts, aftermarket or otherwise for the R50. For long travel, you’re talking about tearing out everything short of the front diff, and getting custom coilovers, upper and lower arms, and custom mounts for each of those, as well as likely custom CV axles (since they have to be longer) and any necessary adjustments to the steering and hubs. The subframe may also need strengthening if you’re planning on jumping it and whatnot. If long travel just sounds like a cool idea to you, you can keep the R50 and just forego it. If it’s something you have to have, sell it right now, cause you’re screwed otherwise.
@branthill8958
@branthill8958 3 жыл бұрын
@@208Tyler I figured as much, I had been leaning toward ditching the whole front all together, doing sub-frame reinforcements, and attempting to fab late 90's ranger I beams in there. See-ing how that's a big bite to chew I was wonder who else had gone about it. I just love the motor and feel of interior too much to build something else.
@208Tyler
@208Tyler 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a tremendous amount of fab work for a vehicle that was never designed for the dunes, I don’t think I’d pick the VG33E for high speed desert running. That’s a lot of money to throw at a vehicle worth less than 5k in hopes of maybe having a decent dune runner.

Thanks Is they a model and year considered idea as a first purchase with plans for select mods?
@208Tyler
@208Tyler 3 жыл бұрын
There’s a few considerations. If larger tires are the goal, maybe buy something that already has 4.6 gears. If you like AWD, maybe get an 02-04 LE. Look for one with a tow package already installed if your planning to tow. Those are some of the small ones. The big choice is choosing between VG and VQ, and getting an auto that isn’t beat up or a manual

Great. More rig envy for me to deal with 😭. I have yet to stumble upon the cost of the sfd parts (spacers, steering linkage) panhard bracket, strut angle spacers). Do you know the purchase cost amount minus the stuff needed from the tool store?
@208Tyler
@208Tyler 3 жыл бұрын
The cost of SFD parts is totally dependent on your ability to fabricate/ need to outsource labor and materials. You need the angled strut spacers, the motor mount spacers, and the subframe spacers. Then steering linkage and Panhard drop. Then of course all the tools needed to tear apart the subframe and essentially replace motor mounts. There’s no set purchase cost, unless a kit comes to market like the P2S one, which has yet to release a price or be advertised as a continually available product

@208Tyler
@208Tyler 3 жыл бұрын
In some manner or other, probably. There’s nothing about the front bumper, radiator support, or the front of the unibody that is designed for dynamic off road recoveries. All of that needs to be be beefed up/replaced before being recovered from the front. The tow hooks on the front are just that- tow hooks, not recovery points.

Question: I have 96 Path almost at 300,000 miles now. It runs great, but how much longer can it run
@208Tyler
@208Tyler 3 жыл бұрын
The answer to that question entirely depends on how well it was maintained up until now. The VG is GREAT engine that seems to last a while. If it’s running great now, it’ll probably keep running good for a while. The transmission will probably go first, I’d stay on top of fluid changes.

@208Tyler
@208Tyler 3 жыл бұрын
As you probably know, there’s a facelift at the 99.5 model year. One looks like a 2000, the other looks like a 1998. Shock mounts change sometime between 1999 and 2001, but other than that it’s MOSTLY the same. With the new VQ engine in 01, I’m sure the front end weight changed and required different struts. I would order parts that are designed for you 99 pathy, and I don’t see any reason to be compelled to do otherwise. Rockauto is a great place for generic stuff, and nissanpartsdeal.com is also a great place to get stuff.

That’s weird. I’d have to look at an FSM or something to fully prove my point, but I have no reason to believe that 03 and 04 R50’s where factory equipped with anything other than a drive by wire system.

@@208Tyler yea I thought it was a little weird when I bought it and saw a vq35 had a throttle cable but I never really questioned it until i saw this video. I wanna do a little bit of research myself or maybe look up my vin and see if that'll tell me anything about why it is. To be honest I would prefer it to be drive by wire so now I wanna find out why it's not lol

How can I fix the rear hatch not opening

So let me get it straight. And sorry if it sounds dumb. I’m a newbie. I was reading about the rear coils. So apparently the Land Rover NRC9448 are for the rear, but in the link posted says is for the front and there are a couple of options (meaning they have NRC9448.C8, M8, TR, ect. Can someone bring me some light to the subject. Tanks
@208Tyler
@208Tyler Жыл бұрын
Ya. The springs fit the front of a Land Rover, but the rear of a pathfinder. The part numbers are for differences in ordering- one at a time, bulk, etc. a 9448 is a 9448 though, just order whichever allows you to buy two.

Yes. He bought them from a different R50 owner who custom-assembled them. I eventually added BX build headlights to mine, which I have videos on

The only (reputable) place that sells them is Pines to spines. You can find them on NPORA or Instagram

how does the 2002 le model rank in this era compared to the 03-04s
@208Tyler
@208Tyler 2 жыл бұрын
Drive by throttle on the 02 and a stronger LSD. The negative side is that it has the IACV issue that will render the car undriveable of you don’t catch it in time. They’re very similar. Another cool option is the 01 LE, which would get the manual T-case instead of the Auto mode t case on the 02-04. More info on model years here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7RmicuenrOUe2w.html

This video answered some questions. So I do need to run spacers no matter what if putting on larder than stock tires. Her 31's already rub when turning sharp without a lift. I'm about to lift my ladie's 96 but I have to also fix a death wobble and serious clunky slam noise when coming off a curb or bumpy street. What is the most common reason for this? I'm hearing all kinds of possibilities. Thanks brother. Subscribed!
@208Tyler
@208Tyler 11 ай бұрын
You don't have to do wheel spacers, but you do need 3.75 backspacing via wheels or spacers to clear 32" and larger tires. Death wobble is rear trailing arm bushings
