Don't buy leaky water bottles that take up too much space from the grocery store. Here's a step by step, space-saving way to store an emergency water supply in larger, food safe storage containers.
This long-term water storage can last between 2 and 6 years when prepped correctly.
Don't forget, you'll need at least 1 gallon of water per person, per day. FEMA recommends that you have a 2 week supply for everyone in the house. I normally only have 1 weeks worth. Mainly because I'll go to a hotel or a family members house if we don't have water for more than a few days.

Don't allow ANY plastic containers to rest on concrete for a long period of time. Even heavy-duty plastic like laundry detergent bottles will fail and leak. Plastic and concrete create a condition similar to electrolysis, just as aluminum and steel are incompatible over the long haul. Separate the plastic from the concrete with plywood, OSB, etc.

I looked it up and the FDA does not require expiration dates as water can be stored indefinitely in a proper container and cool environment. The expiration dates on the water bottles are for plastic container degradation into the water. Not a hater just trying to inform. I learned a couple things from this episode. Thank you.
@AbbottsAtHome
@AbbottsAtHome Жыл бұрын
The expiration is on the taste of the water. It starts to taste stale after a certain period of time. The alkaline drops can help extend that period a little longer. But it is still safe to drink, even when it tastes stale. 👍

It's still best to have a water filter straw, the Berkey, or something similar filter the water after a certain amount of time, probably about a year, or right away, that won't hurt either. That way you can filter out the plastics, and any other possible things in the water, such as bacteria or viruses

I like the idea of pouring it through a water filter before drinking stored water, mainly for taste. But, if you have bacteria and/or viruses in stored water, the container or the water wasn't clean before it was sealed.

I have an unused shower where I store my water. it's dark and whatever leaks is harmless. I label EVERYTHING with a Brother computer-attached label printer ($99). The labels stick well on metal lids, plastic and glass, and peel right off when they aren't needed. They work well in the freezer too. Generic spools of label tape work perfectly.

I buy the refrigerated Gold Peak iced tea (unsweetened) in the gallon sized containers. They are heavy plastic and lasts for a VERY long time. Also use water bob's, make sure you have a secondary way to shower as the water Bob fills the tub. Have a couple Brita's (thrift store, but new carbon filters) to get rid of the bleach smell. I use only fresh water, as our community water is fine, I rotate it every 6 mos. If your water taste stale, aerate it to restore fresh taste,it usually only lacks oxygen in it. Pour from glass to glass to get air in or use a fish tank bubbler,, specifically for that purpose. I do have a few Aquatainers, 7 gallon cube containers for camping with spigots too, makes aerating easy. Just store off cement floor and in a trash compactor bag (super heavy thick bags!) in a bin or tote if it leaks. It doesn't damage anything and you get to keep the water if it leaks for laundry or toilet flushing. Bathing I use a 3 ring blow up pool, a little bath stool, a 5 bucket for hot water (think Japanese bath) and a 32oz cup for rinsing. Use a little hydrogen peroxide (in non-bleached water only!) in the hot water for germ killing. 2- 2.5 gallons of cool water to 1.5- 2 gallons hot water and some hydrogen peroxide, a 5 gallons? 1/8 cup hydrogen peroxide or less, depending on how long you've bated and how dirty you are. In between use like a Halloween 1 gallon bucket, hot water a little bit of baby bath soap and hydrogen peroxide, 1tbsp or so. and use a wash cloth. Think Old West wash downs. Scoop out water from pool and toss in a sink or keep for toilet flushing.

Great info. 4:10 try to avoid ever lifting something heavy like this, you may get away with it a few times, but that is a huge no no for your shoulders. Eventually you'll get a tendon / rotator cuff tear. Especially since you are probably not warmed up before lifting a random jug and those areas are under-developed in most people. Not to nitpick at all, but in an emergency situation, that's the last thing any of us need :)

@AbbottsAtHome You can get yourself a moving dolly, similar to what's used for moving furniture and deliveries. You can move heavy items with ease if you have that kind of item. That happens to be an excellent shape. What you want to do, though is grease and oil the moving parts of each wheel so that it'll last a long time. You really don't have to take anything apart, just put the cushion of grease by the wheel hub and spin it through holding it your in place with your finger. I actually used to work on bikes, and I've actually worked on a trike, so I do know what I'm talking about, because I've done it. When you're done with the grease, then oil it a little bit with a drop or 2 to keep it moist, I use car oil. If you could find an empty reusable blue bottle, that's your best bet to properly dispense the oil. Believe me when I needed a wheelchair after foot surgery comma I even prepared a manual wheelchair by removing all the wheels comic cleaning them comma greasing and oiling period it felt like I was gliding on air when I sat down in that chair right after my return home from surgery. Water is a HEAVY element (1 litre [appx 33.83 fl oz] = 1 Kg [appx 2.2 lb]. So if you have 20 x 20litre water containers sitting up on a shelf, that is a combined weight of 400kg [appx 882lbs] sitting up on the shelf. So, before doing so, just imagine the weight of a Harley Davidson Road Glide sitting up on that shelf? If you reckon the shelf is strong enough to handle that kind of weight, then all good. If not, then you'd better install extra strong shelving, bracing, support columns, etc, if you don't want to eventually hear a great big crashing noise and be left a big mopping up task.

8 drops (1/8 of a teaspoon) of 6% chlorine bleach per gallon per EPA guidelines. You can also use 1 cup (8 ounces) of 3% hydrogen peroxide per gallon instead. Also, water weighs 8.34 pounds per gallon, so those 6 gallon containers are 50 pounds each plus whatever the containers weigh, so probably in the neighborhood of 53 pounds.

These plastic containers can also leak. I kept water in exactly this container in a dark closet (I live in an apartment and do not have a basement or extra shower). I replaced the water every 6 months or so. After a few years, the plastic developed a small crack and all the water leaked out and destroyed my hardwood floor. I think it would be safer to use a stainless steel container.

I do something similar in prepping the containers, but I add a teaspoon on bleach to the containers after they are filled with water. I change them out every 6 months on a 3-month rotation (1/2 the containers every 3 months). I've tried drinking the water at 6 months to see if I have any reaction to it; I put it in a smaller 1l bottle and shake it up to get it aerated which reduces the Cl concentration to 'unnoticeable' (as I call it). No issues with it so far. I keep a three week supply and use 2.5 gallon containers because (as you pointed out) those bigger ones are really heavy when full.

Quite sure its not safe . Its allowed to use 0,004g bleach pr litre in drinkingwater, but its not common to use more than 0,0005 to 0,001 pr litre, a teaspoon contains 5,000 g. If your water is not safe and clean its off course more expensive but then more safe to use a coalfilter. But science are in doubt if bleach at all is safe to the human body

Plus, make sure you fill the container all the way up to its absolute maximum capacity until you can't hold another drop. The cleaner your water, you'll notice more bubbles, indicating purity.

I learned a lot from you. I wanted to share, Bleached water is disgusting. Made me nauseous and sick, my Dog wouldn't even drink it. I suggest less Bleach and buy Tang, Starburst drink flavor mixers. Emergency situation the Sugar Water would be great. Long-term you must find fresh Water sources. Also the water for cleaning and washing should be in a strong spray bottle and a Super soaker toy gun for the Dishes and tough Mud. Pressurized water makes a huge difference. Sorry last one... Best Bath is Dutch Oven Boiled Water with a Rag and Nitrile gloves allow you to grab the Cast iron lid for Warmth. Sorry for bad grammar running sentence, I just got out of 638 days of Emergency Camping.

Wow. That is extreme. It’s such a long time, I hope you enjoyed it. Just wondering how much bleach to water you used. I can often smell bleach or chlorine in certain tap water. Drinking out of a wider mouth cup has helped to cut the smell. But maybe I should buy some water filters to make it easier to drink stored water. Thanks for sharing.

not to forget the cost. smaller containers co$t a lot more. but as to storage, buy those xmass storage plastic boxes. if you need to store them were water can not drain off safety. as these will hold any leakage, but even then store everything in a "cool" no sun location. even a small lady can carry one of those 6 gallon jugs full of water on her back in a backpack deal. shoulder protection and gut strap. aka: quality --very pricey-- hiking backpack. for a day if bugging out is forced. as to a storage location. weight is a factor as one gallon of water weigh's in about 8.34 pounds. WATER does not EXPIRE. we are drinking dino piss. that how long water lasts. may taste stale. but can be "freshened " up by pouring it back and forth between a couple pots/buckets. getting fresh air back into it. if worried just boil for 3 min. then do the pot deal. to get fresh air back into it. but in a emg cash best to also have a number of very hi-grade filters. getting sick when you need water can cause death. but everybody must have at least 50 gallons of water at home. months...years? without the sun. aka in a cave. not if the sun died. you can live weeks without food, days without water, about 2 min without air. (most people it is seconds). all of above = death times. not survival limits.

Hello and thank you for the video. I followed another videos directions on filling a 55 gallon opaque drum for my garage. It was a brand new barrel and I cleaned it out with soapy water and rinsed it out very well. The water came from my water hose. I DID NOT REMEMBER to "sanitize" the drum before adding my stoarage water to the drum. Do I really need to empty out my drum, re-clean, sanitize with bleach, and re-fill my drum with water, or should i be safe having "missed the bleach step"?

Anyway to have water in an emergency is a good way. Your talking about spending 20.00 on a container just to store 6 gallons of water. If you got the cash good for you. Not everyone does and they say you only have to change out the water every six months. If the water is out and you flush the toliet it could come back into your house if the water sanitation isnt working. You should not use your toliet if you are out of water.

I read the polypropylene breaks down and can't handle chlorine or Bleach? Can I still use these containers with this aquamira treatment? Will it poison us? Or make the containers leach chemicals? Also let's say it can be used how do I start? Wash each container soap and water rinse. Do I splash each container with Bleach? Then add the tap water then add the drops of treatment? Do i have to boil tge water first or can it go straight from the tap? Or should i just buy distilled water instead? Then treat it with drops? The goal is for long term storage for hopefully 2-3 + years if possible. Ill be doing multiple containers want to do it right. Thanks

Oh, I know a bunch of poor people with pools. Heck, I was one of them when I was a kid. 😂 since you don’t, I suggest making friends with whichever neighbor does. Or, just fill your tub instead. 😊

They can work, if you want to save money and recycle containers. Just be sure to clean properly before filling. And only store them in a place where nothing will be damaged if they leak. 👍
