There are some occasions wherein Hebrew words begin with "vav" as an independent consonant vs. a conjunctive. One example comes from Gen. 11:30: וַתְּהִי שָׂרַי עֲקָרָה אֵין לָהּ וָלָד Sarai was barren and childless. The last word "valad" means child (related to "yeled" and Arabic "walad".) Another case is Exodus 38:28 where it speaks of וָוִים, which are hooks for the posts in the mishkan (the tent of meeting in the wilderness). The word "vav" actually means "hook". It's a biblical term that has survived down to Modern Hebrew as well. Modern Hebrew has numerous words that begin with vav as a primary consonant or as a loan word.

A similar thing in Arabic, the "Min" when followed by a word that begins with a Ya, for instance, the Nun disappears becomes silent, and morphs into the ya. Min Yakhsha becomes Meyakhcha (He, who fears)

I just wanted to add that עַל can also mean: about, concerning or regarding. Just like how in English one can say "He will give a speech on a topic that is familiar to you all" or "He will give a speech about/regarding/concerning a topic that you are all familiar with".

I once heard from a grammar police officer that conjunctions aren't really words but are abbv'd words. You will find abbreviations in the dictionary but the point it's not a quote/unquote 'separate' word. For instance, cannot and can't have the same meanings but are not separate words. When I say separate, I mean having a life of its own. The one depends on the other. If cannot was lost in 300 years. The meaning of can't would also be lost.

vav is similar to the waw in Arabic. Except that the waw (wa) in Arabic can be detached from the actual word, it's not attached to it.

For a new beginner like me. What are the dots under the letter Waw and the crosses under other letters. Sometimes they use 3 dots or even a line under a letter. Is there a logical function using them?
@kenschenck

וַיְּהִיmight be a bad example, pal. it can be easily verified by looking at Gen. 1, since there are a lot of "and it was so". my textbook teaches me that when yod employs a sheva, it cannot be doubled, so that the "double-letter" dot should be omitted., the correct form thus should be: וַיְהִיּ

Good video, but you keep referring to the "Old Testament", but the original Hebrew is from the Jewish Bible known as Tanach. The Christian "Old Testament" is a highly corrupted version of the Tanach.

Everybody has their own own interpretations of ancient hebrew. But we should remain open to the work of Creator is far more vast then we think. Mashiach = Messiah Does it really translate, 'Anointed with Oil'...? I think so, but there's more to it. *YaH's Place of Slaughter* God's Threshing Floor Thor's Hammer... Unstoppable Juggernaut . Samson, made Great *Mess* of things.

Wow I just realize my youtube ID, Mossaic. Its so close to Mashiach. I've been using this name tag for years and years... long before I even took interest in ancient hebrew. Even as a kid playing video games I used Mossaic; I see now, Papa The Creator, has always intended for me to learn ancient hebrew. Lifting my heart to Him, giving Him all the credit, and glory.
