I learned of Dolly Sods earlier this year but haven't visited yet. Your piece is the best I have watched. My impression is this wilderness area is packed with people, most of whom don't get it that it is a wilderness. You have acknowledged that subtly but have kept with what the Dolly Sods is or should be. Thanks for the ride!

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It can be a busy place at times. I recommend going during the week if possible. I started this trip on a Wednesday, and it was very quiet until Friday evening. When I walked out on Saturday, there were probably 30 tents in the last 2.5 miles. It's popular for a reason, though. I hope you can check it out soon.

Much better format for a hiking video than the typical "talking into the camera". Poetic. Calming. Inspired me to go back to Dolly Sods despite how difficult it is to navigate thru the wilderness. I instantly subscribed after watching this! Thank you for making the best hiking videos. Please make more videos that are Narrated only. :-D

Thank you very much for the kind words! I've enjoyed making videos a lot more since I switched from talking to the camera to narration. I realized that I'm not very interesting to watch when I talk and I never know what to say, haha. I'm glad you enjoy this style of video. There will be more to come for sure. Thanks for the sub!

Nicely done. This video was well composed and well executed. Images, narration and background worked in synergy to capture the essence of place in a poetic way, which is no easy task. I've been to Dolly Sods and camped there alone. It is a place of enchantment and beauty. Route finding can be problematic but that is part of the adventure. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Nice choice for day #1's camp site. I camped at that spot on two occasions (Once with a group and once solo). The last time I went solo though the wind flapping on my tent was unbearable. In fact, on that trip I believe I'm partly to blame for the extension of that massive rock wall. At the time (This was 2019) it was mainly just facing the western edge into the Canaan valley and I used some of the rocks from the camp to help protect my tent from the east. I tried to setup camp there again back in June but the wind that day was too much, and my tent was on the verge of becoming a kite. Also, regarding Lions head, my first time on the Rocky Point trail was similar. I couldn't find it and ended up dangerously climbing some rocks. I didn't make it all the way and was eventually like "What the hell am I doing?" then walked down before injuring myself. Haha
@beyondthecampfire
@beyondthecampfire 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing! And thanks for the windbreak too, haha. It helped keep me warm on a night when my sleeping pad was gradually losing air. It's a great view, but I have to imagine that it's often too windy for camping. Good to hear I'm not alone on the route-finding to Lion's Head. I was using AllTrails at the time, and it was still hard to find. I definitely broke some of the "solo hiking rules" when I was climbing down from there...

Wow you have truly outdone yourself in this video!! Your magnum opus thus far. I can tell you are a writer by the quality of your narration. You could create a very illustrative story just from the transcript of what you had to say about the trail! Did you write those notes while on the trip, or after you got back home and rewatched the footage? For the life of me I can’t remember what camera and editing software you use, do you mind sharing those again? Truly, truly, this is film-worthy quality work you’re creating here. You deserve way more views and reception, some of the best I’m subscribed to! Cheers!

My comment keeps disappearing, so you might get multiple notifications, haha. Anyway, thank you so much! I'm humbled! I put some extra time into this video, and I'm happy with the way it turned out. I'm glad to hear you liked it too. I tend to take a lot of notes on the trail. Before I started making videos, I kept a blog about my travels, so I'm used to writing things down. When I get home, I flesh out the notes and turn them into something coherent. I try not to add things that I wasn't thinking about or observing on the trail. My camera is a Samsung Galaxy S7, haha. One day I'll upgrade to a nice DSLR, but the phone has worked okay for the last several videos, despite its limitations. For editing, I use the free version of Davinci Resolve. Thanks again for watching and for the kind words!

Thank you! Aside from the Rocky Ridge Trail (where I camped the first night), you wouldn't have too much trouble finding good hammock spots. The southern half of the Sods is especially hammock-friendly, and I've seen many hammocks at established sites on Red Creek. Thanks for watching!
