In this video I head to the Australian Alps to hike the notorious Viking circuit. I decide to do the full 4 days as a traditional swagman using oldschool camping gear. I'm joined by Mattsy from ‪@TheSillySwagman‬ and get to show him the amazing scenery we have in the Victorian High Country.

21:40 That's part of the Geelong Grammar School Timbertop's outdoors programme. Students are required to leave cards at checkpoints like that so the accompanying staff can keep track of when students arrive and depart certain locations along the track. Great video!! Amazing hike.

GGS has both females and males. Each hike group has to fill in the log books. Has to be done correctly as well. If it’s wrong the whole group will get a punishment run or extra hike. (Got my share of punishment runs and extra hike) was lucky enough to spend my year 9 there. Still love the outdoors.

The Timber Top cache(bottle) will more than likely be part of communications for a big walk done by students. We used to run a walk (The Alpine Walk )once a year for older experienced teenagers that would go from near Bright to Near Licola. Ps Timber Top is a Campus (yr9 if im correct) of one of the elite Melbourne Grammar schools.

Yeah it is important. I know there are some hikers who would not even have a fire up there because of their concern (which is understanable) ... but I gather if sticking to an existing fire place (so I don't create another fire scar) and only using dead wood that is not hollow (to not disturb habitat) it should be ok. But you are right, it's important to care for the place.

Mate, that bottle belongs to Geelong Grammar School - Timbertop Campus. All year 9 students have to attend Timbertop ( outdoor education campus) as a right of passage to year 10. They are stationed there for the whole year with no days off other than school holidays. They hike 3.5 to 4 per week and academic work the rest of the week along with running in the mornings, service to others, boarding and no hot water (chop wood for the boiler to get hot water). It is an awesome concept building responsibility, respect, resilience and long-life relationships. I used to work there - I loved it but my ex wife didn’t like it at all. King Charles attended Timbertop for 9 months. Great video 🙏🤙

Nice. That's a pretty specky area. Haven't been there in about 15yrs. Used to snoop about there. Its only a tough walking for the uninitiated and those who generally follow tracks. Love the Gantner Hut, used to do some maintenance on it, the tracks and "the loo with a view" There used to be a Mount Buggery sighn up there. I was honked by a big stag on Mount buggery late one afternoon. The cloud cover was low and thick. And i was moving slowly and quietly, scared the crap out of me. Also had it snow a couple of times a few days either side of Christmas up there while training , teaching navigation to staff.

The water bag was the worst thing on the first day (about 5kg) so much wieght pulling me down. On the 3rd day, working out to tie the water bag to my swag, and instead use a stick to support my wieght .. really helped.

Awesome trip mate. Some of the scenes actually reminded me of your recent trip to Uganda. The views out there are incredible. I wish there was some sweet single trail to ride along those ridges. That would be the dream!

Yeah interesting that .. I guess mountains tend to look the same world over when you get out of the tree line and into the alpine grass areas. haha you would have a bloody hard time riding that ridge line .. But there are plenty of other awesome bike tracks in the Vicco high country.

Cracking episode Luke. Great scenery and good job of showing how hard the Viking Circuit is. As someone else said the Nalgene Bottles are in a lot places. Left by GGS Timbertop. They are part of their outdoor ed system.

Yeah great to know, found it really interesting to learn that. I will say the viking circuit is one of the hardest 'established' hikes. I'm sure you could find much harder walks, that are not established. But it was great to give this one a go.

Fair play to you Luke. I’ve done a lot of tough old trips in my day but not once would I have considered doing it the hard way with old timers gear. Really good to see someone going back in time with gear. I reckon we can go back, limit ourselves to the same good materials and tools, and innovate with what we know today. Looking at 1860, but across the world, bringing it to today, because a dialogue and relationship with heritage builds the connection and authenticity that has been so severely eroded in our culture. I reckon bowyangs would help you out.. as would gaiters.. high waisted / high rise trousers, a silk knit shirt for give, and a possum knit sweater.. maybe a waxed canvas poncho instead of the coat. As for carrying system, a wooden frame pack. I'm working on such a thing. The frame is a chair too. A real luxury on hard walks. Nice video. The Hans Zimmer-esk sound track works well in those scenes. I love the reference to old paintings too. Nice to tune in on what you're doing.

Thanks for watching mate. Yeah it's been a journey over the last few years, learning more about the old fellas and old fear. I have another swagman trip I did in the mallee scrub last year that tried to go back to the oldways even more (only woolen blankets etc) I reckon I do need to get my hands on some old era clothing now though. I just love the fact that they got by out bush with that type of gear .. and the more trips I do, the more comfortable you start feeling with the older gear. I'm looking forward to the sheep skin bedroll and sleeping out in that in the winter. Also I love hans zimmer music!!

@@TheBeardedBushranger what got me started was seeing a live slide presentation at a NZ mountaineering club, by some old timers who walked across Iceland in the 1950s. We're talking, women in skirts, men in breaches, canvas packs and tents, cans.. 10 days unsupported, wilderness! 10 days is about how far punters can go with modern gear. They showed their gear, and I was fascinated. Real forgotten innovations, like fuel in the frame of the pack for example!! Multifunctional is key for us using heavy duty gear. The fur trapper history in Alaska has a lot of living historians recreating. We don't seem to have many in Australia for late 19th C.. except those on horse perhaps. Definitely the techniques from other cultures would've been very useful to Australians in that time, had they have had the exposure and willingness to appreciate. Chinese history in Australia at that time was huge too. Taking things from that line of heritage is worth considering too. There's so many interesting angles to take in this way of appreciating.
