Abra is a magnificent 4 month old Belgian Malinois/Dutch Shepherd. She was adopted out as a little puppy along with her littermates to what was thought to be an experienced owner of this breed. Sadly, Abra has been returned due to her mouthy nature. A Malinois returned for her mouthy nature? As a trainer, hearing something like that, is like hearing that a Goldie has been returned for licking the kids too much or a Labrador for wagging their tail too much.
Mouthiness goes with the breed. It should really be expected.
So Abra is back at the shelter, absolutely no fault of her own. She’s just being a 4 month old Mal/Shep that has not had any training or socialisation.
Now she needs a whole lot of it. They don’t call them land sharks or Maligators for nothing. She snapped along the whole way on our bush walk. Chomping on the dogs, affectionately chomping on Luke’s arm, bottom etc …
But these dogs are truly magnificent. They’re a lot of dog trainers’ dog of choice. They’re so smart and all they want to do is work and train and to the very highest level of perfection.
We have expressed to Dee that we’d be happy to take Abra on and train her. However, Dee has a great lead for someone who would be perfect for Abra as a home with experience. We hope this works out for Abra, she really needs someone who understands her to step forward and be her world.
Abra is a good example of a dog that needs an owner that understands the breed. And how it can not work out so well for a dog like Abra if they simply don’t.
Whilst Dee will be contacting someone in the Hope they’ll take on Abra, if you yourself are an experienced owner of this breed and have successfully trained them in the past and would be interested in Abra please also get in touch with Dee at the shelter.
Again, we’re here for Abra if she needs. What a beautiful girl she is.
After working hard at being the great social workers they are, the farm dogs went for a much deserved swim in the pool.
