I can’t believe it’s been four months since I got my sisterlocks installed. It’s been a great journey and I’m loving it so far. In this video I’m gonna talk about the highs and lows that I’m experiencing so far in my journey. Hopefully to encourage others who have new sisterlocks or those who are considering getting sisterlocks.

Your hair is gorgeous. I have been sisterlocked for almost 6yrs. I started to retightening my own hair 6mths into my journey (self taught via KZfaq videos). I have continued to self maintain. In my opinion your hair is being retightened to tight. If it hurts that means your hair is being pulled to tight. I would be very concerned about that if I was you. Especially, if you are seeing those white builds at the root. That's your hair being pulled out at the scalp. I personally, am no longer bothered about having super neat roots. I would rather a full head of hair than suffer with traction alopecia. My hair growth approx 1/2 inch per month and I didn't experience much length until year 3. Which is all part of the locking process. For the first 3years my hair was growing, but my hair was shrinking as the locks are forming. After Year 3, it's grown like a weed. At almost 6 years my hair is almost waist length, my locks are fully formed, frizziness and thickness has reduced (I have trimmed it several times). I loved all the stages, but at the beginning I longed for it to be waist length. Now I am here I miss my hair shoulder length and the frizzy thickness I had around year 2. I am planning on cutting my hair to a layered, mid back length, before the summer. Continue to enjoy the process. Like you, I know this has been the best hair decision I ever made. I have never felt so beautiful. I love that it is so low maintaince. Enjoy 👑

Wow thanks for the detail. I’m so scared to self maintain. I told myself I would eventually but now I’m thinking i won’t lol but we’ll see. I’ll definitely tell her to loosen ups next time. Usually it wasn’t this painful. I can’t wait to see what my hair transforms into as time passes. I feel like I love the stage it’s in now but I feel like I will feel like that for every stage lol Thank you watching and contributing to my journey ♥️♥️

@@queenofthej I was also scared to self retighten. Practice makes perfect. Now I can do it by feel alone, without a mirror or even sat in a dark room. I have combined a few locs by mistake. Initially I reacted like the world had come to an end. Some I managed to separate and some I did not. I have learnt to accept and love my double headed dragons. There are so many locs that no one can tell unless I point it out to them. I have self maintained my hair since going natural, to be honest being dependent on a person to maintain my hair, was to stressful for me. It's on my schedule, I control the rotations/ tention on my scalp, it's in the comfort of my own home, and it free ninety nine. I see my retightening time as part of my pampering sessions. If I plan to do it in a day, I put on comfy lounging clothes, grab snacks, re prepare meals, watch movies or YT sisterlocks videos (for motivation). Other times, I may do it sections at a time, over a week. Because I self maintain I have lost probably less than 5 locks over the 6yrs. I have heard how some people have lost a lot more locs, due to leaving to large a gap between retightening. When we went into lock down, it did not impact my hair maintenance routine. It was then, that I truly appreciated the benefits of knowing how to do it myself. But even though the retightening sessions can be time consuming, because it's once every 6 weeks (for me), in comparison to my loose natural hair, it's still soooo low maintenance. I am pro being self-sufficient, but I also appreciate the benefits of having someone else doing it for you. So do whatever works best you boo 💕👑

Tunisia Ali talks about this - maybe the reties are too soon. I do my own reties every two months and definitely don’t do them tight. I sometimes can even stand to do one more pass through but don’t. I love my scalp and go easy. On another note your locs are so beautiful.

Hi pretty lady ! I wanted to leave a couple of suggestions! I don’t think your retightening should hurt but if it’s just that you art tender headed now you can use an electric hand held head massager prior to going to your appt(like a day). It helps relax your scalp a lot. Also separating your locs prior to going in and popping a Tylenol should also help too(: Your hair is so gorgeous and I am loving seeing your journey♥️

Hey boo! And yeah maybe that day was just an off day because usually it doesn’t hurt it may be A LITTLE sore but nothing to mention. This time was just different. I’m massaging my head as we speak! Lol Thank you and thank you so much for watching.

Even when I do my own retightenings, my scalp gets sore. I think it's because you just get used to minimal to cero manipulation.
@queenofthej
@queenofthej 2 жыл бұрын
That’s true. It’s been a while since I’ve pulled, manipulated ect my hair like I did when I was loose natural

I have been hard-headed all my life lol my last retightning hurt a bit as well. I think it's because we haven't been manipulating our hair and scalp like we did as loose naturals. I agree with massaging your scalp. I think it will also help your hair grow bc of the blood circulation. Your hair is looking fabulous! You are 1 month ahead of me so I love watching your journey ❤ in addition to your authentic content. Xoxo

I noticed after the first year my pain stopped because I don’t retighten all the way to the scalp I skip the last pass through maybe you can suggest it at your next appointment the follicles don’t need to be stressed out I don’t have sisterlocs I have braidlocs
@queenofthej

Try braiding your edges down in loose cornrows before washing. See if that helps 😊

I didn’t do anything with them at all I just let it do what it does but for me it stopped unraveling after my 5th-6th month but I think it also depend on our hair types as well most of my locs have matured but some hasn’t yet
