What is it really like being in Antarctica? and what are the downsides to what is already an incredibly expensive adventure? I'll give you an insight into some potential drawbacks of this journey, but obviously, there is no such thing as a trip not worth taking :) so I hope you enjoy my take on this.
This sums up the last days we spent in Antarctica right up until we went to cross the Drake Passage. We had some bad weather days, changes in our plans, and some of the most memorable moments of my life. Enjoy!
*special thanks to Brian R. for the cell phone video :) *

I think the most important one you missed. The drake passage. I've been to the antarctica and was lucky with perfect sunny weather. Animals everywhere. And a "calm" Drake. It's been the most impressive experience of my traveling ever.

My husband and I returned from Antarctica 3 days ago. We were lucky that it was never colder than 32 degrees during the day. Two days it was warmer by 10 degrees than where we live in Virginia. We were never cold because we were dressed properly. One day I was so warm I had to unzip everything and take off my gloves and hat. That was the day I could have reached out and touched a penguin on it's little head. I didn't, of course. The Drake Passage was BAD. My husband has been sailing all his life and wouldn't take seasick pills the first night. He was violently ill the next morning. Coming home he asked for the pills! This video was extremely informative for people thinking seriously of going. Great job!

I could tell of an adventure my wife and I took on our 40th anniversary. We went to the middle of the globe; the Galapagos Islands and WOW!!! Did we ever learn a lot as well. There was a lot of hiking and we toured 6 islands. The boat's interior was very impressive and the dining room looked like it was fashioned from the Ritz Carlton or some such hotel. The fruit juices they offered you first thing in the morning were sweet enough to risk blood sugar problems for a diabetic. Yes, out-of-the-way experiences are a one-in-a-lifetime experience. I'm glad you liked it!!

I guess traveling as a tourist is much different than my experience since I actually worked there for 6 1/2 months. The sun was up continuously for 24 hours and during the peak of “summer” from late Oct to mid Feb, the temperature was very doable with a sweatshirt or light jacket. A completely different experience to say the least. Penguins, seals, whales, were a daily occurrence. And the cold weather and extreme storms were the high point, after all its Antarctica not a sunny tropic island.

I read this week that two passengers with Quark Expeditions died in Antarctica during a Zodiac excursion. They haven't released specifically what happened though. I wonder how they will address this in the future. Apparently the zodiac overturned. It had 6 passengers aboard and 2 crew. Two passengers died.

sighs; it's cold, the weather might alter your experience, you are surrounded by other people, and wildlife behaves naturally (instead of predictably, they way they appear to you in a Zoo)? These 4 reasons are exactly the same whether you are trying to decide to go to a movie or play, attend a ballgame, visit a museum, go on a hike in the nearby woods, and even taking the day off from work to do some yard-work. Sadly naive, the fact is that anyone even considering a trip like this, regardless of the specific locale, faces the exact same decision-matrix. It's called "adventure tourism" for a reason. If any of these ostensible reasons give you pause about taking such a trip...I say listen to them since those feeble reservations mean that the trip is not for you. Stay at home and watch KZfaq videos instead. Then ponder your own inability to deal with the unpredictability inherent to the world we live in when your internet connection goes down for a few days because your ISP just went bankrupt or your spouse forgot to pay that month's cable bill! 🙄🤔😔

5fth reason: You would see that there is an indestructible dome above us and it will destroy your world view... if you would be allowed to explore the area independently. 4:44 cell phone videos don´t have standard play, never had. ...but it shows "SP" in the "cell phone video" for some reason. 7:21 "needs to be regulated" - no independent travel/exploration is allowed. ... since 1959, where no government had any alleged concerns about the environment. 7:25 thank you for my daily NLP-brainwashing.
