If you are in the market for some new Chinos or trousers, don't get fooled into purchasing 'skinny fit' or 'slim fit'. It just isn't going to be comfortable and they aren't going to look classy or elegant. Classic fit will also look better and more aesthetically pleasing. If you need a bit of persuasion, I've outlined 4 points why classic fit is far superior to skinny fit in this video.
If you are interested in the same chinos I'm wearing, check them out here: www.principlem.com/shop-all/b...

Hey, thanks! I guess this leads me to the reason I started my own brand (@principlem) 10 years ago-it was hard to find classic yet approachable & decent priced items that I liked. Most of my clothing is from Principle M but given we are located in Beijing with a focus on bespoke & MTM with limited RTW, it isn’t a viable option unless you live in China. Depending where you live, I’d recommend trying finding something local.

What do you recommend for men with bigger thighs and athletic builds. Everything i wear even relax fitted chinos appear very tight
@Justin_Kwan
@Justin_Kwan Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you might need to go MTM. If you have an athletic build, you probably have a slim waist compared to hips so if anything fits in the waist it will be too tight in the hips and thighs. However, you could try sizing up so it fits comfortably in the hips and thighs then find someone who can help alter the waist. Just note the maximum a waist can be reduced without pattern distortion is around 1-2 inches.

For chinos, I'd recommend a cotton around 275g/m. This is a good mid-weight and works well year round for limited outside use on the hottest or coldest days and you'll be fine indoors in temperature controlled environments.

Classic fit is not coming back because it never left! Unless you are an adolescent and want to look like Pee- wee Herman classic style along with comfort will always win the day regardless of the marketing folly of the super skinny look. It's amazing to me that it has lasted this long and IMHO is a ridiculous look along with trousers that are hemmed way too short, like a clam digger! You're on the right track sir!

It’s really difficult to find classic fit chinos or trousers with pleats. I did find a company that does really nice trousers with pleats (I like double pleats) but at £255 for a pair of trousers, that’s too expensive for me. The fabric is 100% wool, but that’s still too expensive for me. Tight trousers are not the slightest bit masculine looking either. Even Max Wall (look him up) didn’t have his trousers as tight as most of them.

Hi, I know your pain when it comes to finding honest priced trousers, which is one of the main reasons I started Principle M over 10 years ago...first to offer classical tailoring at a reasonable price but then I started designing and rolling out some classic inspired RTW, like the Chinos in the video. Just to give you an idea, we charge under $150 for them and offer them MTM for a slight premium if RTW doesn't fit. If interested, keep an eye open for the launch of our international website in the next month or so. Thanks for tuning in and watching!

I think the full drape cut is even better. Where the trousers should cover 2/3s (in width) the length of your shoes.

Yeah, I'm slowly moving in that direction. However, I used to like slightly slimmer and no break...it's interesting how we need time to experiment with style and find what we like--which changes over time.

Well, if you are slim, off the shelf classic fits might not work, but I still think classic fit could work. What I mean is a high rise, and a relaxed and clean draping cut. If you are slim and you wear slim, it will accentuate the fact that you are slim. Classic cuts can add a bit of volume, if you'd like, without looking bad or baggy. Just takes some effort and trial and error but it can work, I promise!

Hey Justin, I appreciate the invitation to argument. I'm a beginner in men's fashion and I thought I'd share my skinny-sympathizer thoughts. I understand that classic is classic for a reason-and I love my high-waisted, pleated trousers in classic style-but I no less understand it's called "classic" and not "universal" for a reason. Skinny fit has its' place. That place is in casual settings and on guys with more, for lack of a better word, feminine builds. You can't tell me someone built like Mick Jagger or Timothee Chalamet isn't killing it in skinny clothing-they do it all the time. And McJagger isn't young. Because it's not an age thing. It's just a build thing. Admittedly, it's also a bit of a setting thing. I'd never wear Neil Barrett to, say, sunday mass. But I'd absolutely wear it on a date with my girlfriend. For that reason, I also don't think it's a fad. I simply think skinny clothes look great on some guys regardless of age. And I don't think that market will disappear. There's a reason women wear cocktail dresses and not ankle-length formal gowns on certain occasions. So, why shouldn't guys-the guys who can pull it off-have some skinny trousers in their closet?
@Justin_Kwan
@Justin_Kwan Жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for sharing your skinny-sympathizer thoughts, I’m sure some viewers here will find your comments and views interesting. One thing I’d like to say here for some viewers is that skinny fit is by no means explicitly for those with slim or skinny physiques. In fact, if you are slim or skinny, wearing a classic cut with a bit more volume can actually create a visually bulking effect. Just like how high rise can visually lengthen your proportions making you look taller, I love how you can play around with proportions in classical cuts to enhance your visual appearance. Last note: I bet Timothee Chalamet will be in oversized, high-rise pleated trousers before you know it. Main stream is always a bit slow on but believe it or not, high rise, pleats and voluminous trousers are an incoming trend!

@@Justin_Kwan I think your right on your last statement. Where before I thought pleats look really old fashioned and dorky, I’m now starting to see the appeal, it’s probably because it’s slowly gaining traction and subconsciously I’m catching that wave. (The same with bow ties)
@Justin_Kwan
@Justin_Kwan Жыл бұрын
@@chrisblanc663 I think mainstream will, and is already, overdoing it with very large and baggy pleated pants. So as this ‘trend’ goes into main stream, don’t go too far, find the balance between what was everywhere the last decade or so (skinny) and baggy. That sweet spot is what I’d consider a classic cut pair of pants (with or without pleats) that are comfortable to wear and flattering for your physique.

Classic fit is elegant but slim fit gives a more streamlined silhouette. For us shorter guys, the excess fabric in a classic style makes us look shorter unfortunately
@Justin_Kwan
@Justin_Kwan Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but I couldn't disagree more with your comment--allow me to explain my reasoning a bit. A classic fit with a high rise will make you look taller by elongating your lower proportions. Normally slim fit is in a low rise. So think about that, if the trouser rise is lower vs. one that is higher, you will already create a visually elongating and taller appearance with that higher rise. Second, usually classic fit will be accompanied by a front crease (especially if there is a pleat) and that crease takes the round circumference of the legs and makes it almond-like from the front, making the width look slimmer form the front. The excess fabric is then at the back of the leg and that is room in the leg that will give you extra comfort when walking, moving and sitting. However, I find this is hardest for newbies to classical fit to get used to. My business partner is not tall and pulls off classical very well, if you see his pics, it will be hard to tell he is a shorter gentleman. I hope this is useful and if you are curious to try but worried classic makes you look shorter, I hope this video and reasoning can help you change your mind and give them a try!

The thing is Justin, skinny fit pants are made mostly super affordable, they are less eye catchy so people felt rather safer with them on, because nobody would pay them extra attention that they might not want. Hmm how do you supposed classic fit solves this? What do you guys think?
@Justin_Kwan
@Justin_Kwan 4 ай бұрын
Maybe 'most' people feel safe with them on, like they don't stick out from the crowd. However, to someone who dresses like me, I notice. Now that you've watched this video, you also notice. Like the saying "IYKYK" (if you know you know). So, make a change, go for a comfortable and flattering classic fit.

Why did you use pleated pants for your classic fit example!? Pleats are friggin ugly! I prefer slim fit, as I like snugness (not super tight) with tapered bottoms 👍Regardless, a great video, keep up the good work!
@Justin_Kwan
@Justin_Kwan Жыл бұрын
I used pleated chinos because I like that crisp, clean trouser crease and with pleats that line goes uninterrupted from the cuff all the wait to the waistband, so it’s aesthetically elongating my legs. I do know there are some guys that loath pleats, but hey, maybe this might convince some guys to try them. Anyways, thanks for the feedback and for watching the video.
@talavb9301

I love pleats personally. It's basically just, free fabric, exactly where you need it, and it creates that slimming crease all the way up to the waistband when you're standing straight. Only problem is that putting a phone or wallet in your trouser pocket *kills* the effect. Thoughts on forward vs reverse?

Skinny fit chino's are a definite no for me, but pleats in the waistband are unflattering and old fashioned. Regular fit flat front is the best style, but it is always about personal preference. Young guys can look great in skinny fit, but pleated waists are for old men !
@tanachip

I think you're approaching this the wrong way. It should not be "classic" vs. "skinny," because doing so gives off the impression that there is only one way to do "classic." Rather, the video should approach it from what is "proper" fitting based on your body type.

@Justin_Kwan
@Justin_Kwan 27 күн бұрын
If you are thin, a regular size off the shelf might be baggy for you. But I'd argue a classic fit (and classic proportions) will flatter your body more than a slim fit. For example, classic fit can give you more volume and shape rather than a slim fit, which will only further accentuate your slim silhouette. However, the choice is always yours on what to wear.
