Hi guys!
For those of you who wants to read a good Russian book but doesn't know which one to choose I've reviewed some outstanding novels (which are my personal faves!) and which I think you should start with.
Some of the novels are available online:
"Anna Karenina" by Leo Tolstoy - www.online-literature.com/tols...
"Crime and Runishment" by Fyodor Dostoevsky - www.online-literature.com/dost...
"The 12 Chairs" by Ilf and Petrov - lib.ru/ILFPETROV/ilf_petrov_12...
Music: Already There (Instrumental Version) by Josh Woodward www.joshwoodward.com/

Master and Margarita is my favourite and definetly must-read, but it might seem strange and boring when you read it for the first time. It also has a lot of references to the 1920s Russia which are not obvious now. Enjoy reading!

There was a very strange feature in this case, strange because of its extremely rare occurrence. This man had once been brought to the scaffold in company with several others, and had had the sentence of death by shooting passed upon him for some political crime. Twenty minutes later he had been reprieved and some other punishment substituted; but the interval between the two sentences, twenty minutes, or at least a quarter of an hour, had been passed in the certainty that within a few minutes he must die. I was very anxious to hear him speak of his impressions during that dreadful time, and I several times inquired of him as to what he thought and felt. He remembered everything with the most accurate and extraordinary distinctness, and declared that he would never forget a single iota of the experience. ‘About twenty paces from the scaffold, where he had stood to hear the sentence, were three posts, fixed in the ground, to which to fasten the criminals (of whom there were several). The first three criminals were taken to the posts, dressed in long white tunics, with white caps drawn over their faces, so that they could not see the rifles pointed at them. Then a group of soldiers took their stand opposite to each post. My friend was the eighth on the list, and therefore he would have been among the third lot to go up. A priest went about among them with a cross: and there was about five minutes of time left for him to live. ‘He said that those five minutes seemed to him to be a most interminable period, an enormous wealth of time; he seemed to be living, in these minutes, so many lives that there was no need as yet to think of that last moment, so that he made several arrangements, dividing up the time into portions-one for saying farewell to his companions, two minutes for that; then a couple more for thinking over his own life and career and all about himself; and another minute for a last look around. He remembered having divided his time like this quite well. While saying good- bye to his friends he recollected asking one of them some very usual everyday question, and being much interested in the answer. Then having bade farewell, he embarked upon those two minutes which he had allotted to looking into himself; he knew beforehand what he was going to think about. He wished to put it to himself as quickly and clearly as possible, that here was he, a living, thinking man, and that in three minutes he would be nobody; or if somebody or something, then what and where? He thought he would decide this question once for all in these last three minutes. A little way off there stood a church, and its gilded spire glittered in the sun. He remembered staring stubbornly at this spire, and at the rays of light sparkling from it. He could not tear his eyes from these rays of light; he got the idea that these rays were his new nature, and that in three minutes he would become one of them, amalgamated somehow with them. ‘The repugnance to what must ensue almost immediately, and the uncertainty, were dreadful, he said; but worst of all was the idea, ‘What should I do if I were not to die now? What if I were to return to life again? What an eternity of days, and all mine! How I should grudge and count up every minute of it, so as to waste not a single instant!’ He said that this thought weighed so upon him and became such a terrible burden upon his brain that he could not bear it, and wished they would shoot him quickly and have done with it.’¹

@@bethy_cuter All his stories are wonderful and it's hard for me to pick one favorite. I do prefer his longer short stories with an ensemble cast of characters, where Chekhov has time to develop and examine as if it were a piece of chamber music. Also, his longer short stories have, I won't say happy endings because life is not a fairy tale, but endings that have some possibility of hope. The Wife, Three Years, Story of an Unknown Man, and The Duel are among my favorites.

Third and fourth book sound interesting, I heard nice things about "We", I will definitely read it. First two I read as obligatory books in high school and I remember I was really annoyed by both main characters, but overall I liked the books. The only thing I disagree is "Anna Karenina" movie that you mentioned. It was such a disaster. I remember spending the time in cinema thinking just why. Why did they choose actors that didn't correspond at all to characters, why did they act so bad, what was that ridiculous adaptation? I think people should first read book in order not to get a bad impression based only on this movie.

Russian language more for literature, and English ( from my opinion ) is more science and coolfact. Russian more flexible to Mack a new word and describing something in interesting way and everyOne will understand what it is means. The tone of what you saying can change because of how you put words in sentences. For example “Дайте кофе»( can I have a coffee) it sound kind and formal, but if “Кофе дайте» ( can I have a coffee ) it sounds more rude and informal. It is good to learn Russian from books cuz in this classic books more words that people using now. ( I am Russian) I bet there only %10 of words that don’t use now and 90% words is still using.

In Britain there aren't huge numbers of Russian books translated into English. Mostly 19th century books: Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Lermentov, Tergenev, Goncharev, Chekhov. Other than that we have Pushkin, Solzhenitzyn, Yevtushenko, Balgakov; not many others. I was lucky to have a job where I had literally nothing to do for 12 hours per day, so I was able to read all of these and get paid at the same time! Everything of Chekhov, War & Peace, Oblomov and Crime & Punishment I remember most fondly. Hope this was interesting, which Russian books do you like?

Are you aware of the most scandalous book in Russian literature - "Secret Journal 1836-1837" by A. S. Pushkin. This literary masterpiece is published in 25 countries, staged in Paris etc. see: mipco.com/win/pushLP.html The famous Russian poet and writer Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837), fatally wounded in a duel by his brother-in-law and rival, left a secret, ciphered journal, which was discovered and smuggled out of the USSR in 1976 by the Russian author Mikhail Armalinsky. There has been a lot of speculation and mystery surrounding this journal. According to legend, Pushkin's will stipulated that the journal not be published until 100 years after his death. Some people claimed that the Journal never existed at all. The Journal does exist and consists of explicit confessions about intimate relationships that Pushkin had with his wife, her two sisters, and other women, which brought him to his tragic end. These astonishing events and reflections reveal unknown details of Pushkin's life - the life of a nineteenth century Russian Don Juan. Its available on amazon, ebay, etc
