The Monstera Deliciosa is one of my favourite indoor plants and I love to get more fenestrations on this houseplant. Fenestrations are the splits or holes that your plant starts to develop with age and good care. The more sunlight this plant gets the faster it will produce fenestrations.
This plant can handle a lot of sun, including direct sunlight. Many of the problems with slow or small growth from this plant can be fixed by giving it more light. I'll take you through 4 signs your plant is telling you it needs more sun.

It’s a pleasure to come across somebody who’s passionate about something, but calm and knowledgeable. No hype, no silly faces, just commonsensical advice. I’m now about to chop off the top of my 4 separate monsteras, so I can start again. In the last,move divided them at the base, which worked, but after that they did their own thing. Basically, I had no idea what I was doing. I really like the ladder stake idea, but as I have 11 foot high ceilings (I live in England, in a 18th century house), this might be a step too far, especially with fitted carpets in the rooms. However, one of my monsteras is in a cold greenhouse, and despite a couple of hard frosts this winter, looks healthy. So maybe I’ll try a ladder stake in there. Thanks for your videos.

@@KillThisPlant Hello!! I’m blown away to see you even acknowledge a new comment on an older video- that’s amazing. That being said: help?! I have a pretty fast, well growing mature plant I bought from a clearance section (!!) he was in rough shape, but doing amazingly well now. I get a new leaf every holiday it seems. Easter, Mothers Day, then Fathers Day, 4th of July and Aug 1st- my kids birthday. It’s crazy… The two oldest/biggest leaves are in rough shape still. Ripped, a few areas that won’t flip back the right way, old sunburn damage… should I prune or not?
@KillThisPlant
@KillThisPlant Жыл бұрын
@@ThestuffthatSaralikes leaves that are still green produce energy for the plant. When the plant wants to shed those leaves it'll reabsorb the nutrients it needs and the leaf will fall off. Your job is to balance looks with plant health. It probably won't be a huge deal if you snip off 1 or 2 tattered leaves. But what % of leaves are you cutting? 10%? Probably fine. 50%? Probably not fine. That's my philosophy anyway. Sorry it wasn't a yes or no but I find that helps guide me with future decisions.

my monsteras sadly can't get a lot of sun light because i only have one window and don't have space for plants there. But I recently bought some new lamps (just regular LEDs) that i put on my shelves to make my room brighter during the winter and my monsteras seem to love them. Their groth sped up a lot and they turned their leaves towards the lamps.

I use lights for my houseplants, since I started with orchids years ago and limited windows, I began with CFL bulbs many years ago and now LED. Lights have always been part of plant care for me. Orchids are so easy to ignore and they thrive, lol. My first monstera is doing well, despite being moved around in the house from a south facing to a west facing window (and not incrementally as you advise). I currently have a light about 3' from my monsteras' tallest leaf, hanging from the curtain rod in the same window. I'm not getting as many fenestrated leaves so I'm experimenting with the light distance and duration. I get about 3 leaves every 2 days. When they uncurl yellow I add plant food. I let my monstera get almost dry between waterings. It's starting it's first ariole rootlets. Thanks so much for your content!

Thank you so much! I’ve had a monstera that I received as a gift, but got no instructions on how to care for it. In fact, until recently, I had no idea what it was called! I’ve had it for seventeen years and never knew until now that it could tolerate, and actually needs, more sunlight than I’ve been giving it. I’ll be gradually moving it closer to the window now that I know. Thanks again!

My mother put hers in the corner of the kitchen right by a giant sliding glass door. Then she moved and out it in the corner of her sunroom. It’s always thrived. The thing is massive and she doesn’t want it anymore because it’s taking up too much room 🤣 I’m trying to get her to separate it, but I might have to do it myself.

It is now so large that I don't think I can take it out next year...so we are going to move it down to our living room next year under a skylight . Right now it's in the dining room in a shady corner. This video really helps me understand how to move it next spring. I can't take it down to the living room now because the whole room is filled with tropicals that cam in for winter . We are building a greenhouse but it's been slow with our budget. I would stop fertilizer until your plant looks healthy. The most common reason I see is that ppl repotted into too big a pot with not great quality soil. Have you repotted recently? What's your soil like?

@jordanbailey3809 2 жыл бұрын
@@KillThisPlant I repotted last spring, I beleive. I used my own mixture for potting soil. It contains fox farm ocean forest, coco coir, horticulture charcoal, orchid bark, a little d.e, and worm casings. I did have it set up in an east facing window (I'm limited with my options) but noticed growth was really slow so I moved it to my south facing only about a month ago. The newer growth does look a lot healthier. Early this year I noticed brown spot so my go to is to cut the diseased leaves right away (why I repotted). Thank you so much for answering.

Thank you Lee for all your videos. I finally had the space for a monstera earlier this summer, so I'm currently watching a lot of your videos on the deliciosa. Got a great deal on a plant with about 6 juvenile leaves and 5 fenestrated leaves, that I slowly moved towards my main window. There it is thriving and now has started to unfurl three beautifully fenestrated leaves. As far as I can tell, my monstera loves to be misted every 2 to 3 days, but today I saw that one of the new leaves has a brown spot on the inside. Could that be because of the misting? It only gets indirect sunlight and all other leaves seem to be fine, so I don't think it's because of the sun or watering...? best regards

It is probably the misting. Not only does it put your plant at a higher risk of fungal infection, it can also act as a magnifying glass when the sun hits it causing burn. I'm glad you got your first monstera. Hope you're enjoying it!

Appreciate your videos and knowledgeable, common sense approach. I live in the Florida Keys and have a large Gumbo Limbo tree that I would like to train a monstera to grow up. What size plant should I start with and how quickly might it grow? also should I train it up some kind of moss pole or can I attach something to the tree for it to climb on. I am a complete novice as far as monsteras go so any advice you can give would be much appreciated. Thank you again for your videos.

You can start to train it up the tree at any size, the main thing is light exposure. Assuming you're talking about an outdoor plant you have to be careful about putting small plants in direct sun outdoors.

Hi there! I found your videos on here by chance and they gave me an idea of what could be going wrong with my monstera. Would you advise putting potted monstera in the morning sun on the balcony (spring-summer)? I live in the plane of northern italy. Thank you very much! 🙏🫶

I don't know. If the increase in light is too much you could still burn your plant from the morning light. It really depends on its current conditions.

What do you think of this idea: So I have this old 35 gallon hexagon fish tank that leaked, but has been repaired. The thing is, a leaky tank is like a cheating girlfriend-- it may seem the same as before, but you'll never really trust it. So I was thinking of using it as a planter instead, by drilling a bunch of holes in the bottom and adding a bottom layer of Leca. Since 35 gallons is actually a pretty huge planter and home depot is having a crazy sale, i was thinking of adding two 13 inch pot Monstera Deliciosas, and two 9 inch pot MD all into the planter, and then only filling it about 75-85% of the way full so the walls and moss pole encourage vertical growth towards a ceiling mounted light, so it doesn't sprawl all over my room quite so bad. I don't mind having to take the aquarium apart at the silicone to repot, so do you think it could work? It seems like it should be fine on paper but I never really see people A) convert aquariums to planters or B) combine a bunch of monstera in one huge pot Thank you for your feedback!

My only concern would be your roots out growing your tank within a year or 2. Repotting or removing would be extremely challenging if not impossible. Especially when the root system becomes so intertwined. I think it'll look nice, but unless you have an escape plan, that's a a 400-500lb paper weight.

general question here: I put my growlights on 10h a day for some years now, Should I reduce the lights on time to around 8 hours in the spring/winter?

Reducing the light would slow your plants growth.

Hello Lee, I just repotted my Monstera plant. It’s big it’s beautiful, but I noticed a few leaves turn yellow and they are the really small leaves. Mostly that’s underneath the big leaves. I seem to fight with those the most, but I reported my plant. I noticed a few leaves turning yellow is this normal? What can I do to prevent it? Please help me out thank you

I dont think it's a light problem, but the only issue mine has right now is that the two newest leaves aren't flat. They curl inwards towards the stem and aren't solid like the others, but they don't droop and don't feel crispy. Idk what to do to help

You might be watering it too much! Check the moisture of the soil - when the plant is in taking too much water it can cause the leaves to droop

Thanks for the video!! I have a pretty small Monstera, maybe 1.5 feet tall. Over the spring it grew really well in a north facing windowsill and grew a new leaf, the most fenestrated yet. But, I had to move in June, and my current home has the WORST lighting. No south facing windows, and all other windows have the sun blocked either by huge trees or walls. So I have been contemplating moving it outside for more sun, but I worry that it's too cold. Especially since it's fall now. After moving, it stopped growing, and in the last week a leaf started to turn very yellow. I foolishly cut it off (I am new to plants and didn't realize I shouldn't do that for monsteras) but I think these are all signs that my plant isn't happy where it is. However, the current spot is also next to a screen door, so I am not sure whether the full growth stop & yellowing is due to sunlight or temperature. I live in zone 9b, in northern california. Foggy San Francisco coastline type location. I know you probably won't get to my comment, but I had to try. :D

It could be a root issue that's causing the yellowing. If you haven't adjusted your watering schedule enough to account for the lack of light (meaning you should water less frequently). But maybe it is just an adjustment period. I hope grow lights could be an option for you.

@@KillThisPlant Oh, wow, thank you for the reply! I really appreciate it. Aahh, that's a good point about needing to water less. Grow lights are probably the best and most fool-proof solution since it's so dark here, I think you're right. Thanks again for getting back to me!

I have a similar situation- upon moving, the only alternative is grow lights.. The plant is not as happy, and does not put out as many large leaves as it used to, but at least it’s alive! I will reward it with a nice sunny corner when we eventually move.
