4 Tips for Getting Started on Your Secondary Essays for Med School

In the last few videos, we've talked about med school secondary essays and the secondary application to med school. Today, we're going to dive into how to start writing them. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is start-hopefully, I can help get you over the hump!
Here are 4 tips to get started writing your secondaries:
1. Focus on the school's mission.
2. Journal about your experiences to come up with stories and themes to mention.
3. Start early-prewrite your secondaries with secondaryapps.com.
4. Don't repeat verbatim stories from your primary app in your secondary essays.
Make sure that as a premed, you don't neglect secondary applications for your medical school application. Med schools rely on your essays as a vital part of the application process.

Thank you so much Dr. Gray for this video. I'm a big big big podcast (5/8 are yours) junkie. Listen to you almost every day while I uber in NYC. You often talk about Mission Statements, do you have any specific video that just talks about that? I dont know how to interpret them and what's the main idea (THE MCAT PODCAST) voice. Would love to hear back from you.

Hardships, eh? So I’m debating this with my colleagues with various responses. I hit a GPA bump sprig sophomore year into Fall senior year- went from all A’s to mostly B’s and C’s. End of fall senior year my pcp diagnosed me with clinical depression. She believes it may have been untreated for a while. Put on meds, and bam, second semester senior year all A’s (and no, didn’t take an easier course load for that semester). Continued into my DIY post-bacc. Would you say that’s a setback? A ton of people have depression and mine was considered moderate. But it probably played a role in this divot.

Hi. First Of all, thank you for the best content that you put for us. I am a premed student who tries to apply to medical school and I am lost during this period. I need some advice from you so I can get back on track and find my way. I would appreciate it if you can help me and talk to me so I know what should I do.

Thank you Dr.Gray for another great video! Secondaries do come so quick!! Trying to prioritize what schools to write first right now. Do you have recommendations on responding to prompts that have short character limits like 150 or 200 words? Those are hard to be too personal and in depth

Yes, when they are short, they are harder and need to be more straight forward.

Thank you for your answer. Also, I developed some new passion/interested in certain health related topic(ie physcial activity etc)after primary, can I put it in additional info part instead of a why school if I think it is important

Thank you Dr. Gray for the great video! It’s was very helpful as I’m starting to write my secondaries. When you say to not rewrite a story from the primary application can it be a different story from the same experience? And what about word count? Should we approach that in a quality over quantity kind of way?
