The pandemic took a toll on every aspect of our lives especially, our work and job hunting. It looks like 2021 is a little uncertain (although we're starting to see glimmers of light). We’re feeling the ripple effects of 2020. Although this video was posted last December 2020, I still find it super helpful if you’re currently looking for a new job or planning to start a job search soon. I had a similar discussion with Jonathan Javier on my channel. His networking tips, interview tips, and career advice makes finding a job during Covid easier!

Im just going to say one thing about the first 2 minutes, being from the same school means nothing to me. When a stranger contacts me asking for a foot in the company... i have no reason to reciprocate and try to get them in simply because we went to the same university. That is bunk. I've tried it with strangers, and strangers have tried it with me and it's useless. Partially because i am an employee and not in a position of leadership to make any sort of decision.
@thefutur

That’s weird. I tend to respond to people who also come from the same school. We try to look out for one another.

@@thefutur thanks for commenting! You might be in a decision making position and have different views about the kind of person that, maybe because you went to Art Center, you might understand the caliber of the graduate coming from that establishment. If it works for building your team, thats great. I definitely don't want to knock what clearly works for you. My state uni was very large and very little was done to cultivate a viable network of peers or alumni. My bosses have also expressed to me that they do not care where one went to school when considering candidates. Degrees and where they were obtained only meant to them that you could complete a goal and finish things. They weren't indicative of skill and drive or team compatibility.

I think having any common ground to break the ice has to be a good thing. I don't think anyone suggested here to hire based on the fact someone went to the same university as you. But, it seems like a pretty good first step to learn about the company and knowledge is power.
@ShaudaySmith
@ShaudaySmith 3 жыл бұрын
@@DjokovicIsOurLordAndSaviour You're definitely right about that, and i wasn't suggesting hiring based on a single factor. What i am saying that attempting to make a stranger part of your network connections, its a daunting task and i guess i'm not receptive to folks trying to grow their network superficially and single-mindedly in a selfish manner. That always seems to be the case when strangers approach me on LinkedIn looking to make a professional connection.

I'm a recent graduate and unfortunately had many unsuccessful responses and near enough opportunities to land a role but sadly didn't make the cut.. Mainly applied for these jobs throughout job seeking sites, not really applying to places I'd like to work in, but after listening to this podcast I'm definitely taking upon these tips to chance on getting a job in a place that I'd REALLY like to work in! Though COVID-19 may hold back most of those opportunities it's still worth putting my foot in the door for the near future and bettering my network!

IDK if that December thing rings true for this year. I've had 2 serious considerations in December. I'm assuming it's because a lot of companies paused hiring for such a long time this year. So I would urge people to maybe take this advice next year, but keep applying in December and waste that time because it's been a very odd year.

can you possibly elaborate on how exactly someone going to the same college can be used to get a job via linkedin? like actually showing a realistic mock conversation you would have to create a relationship with that person, i think that would be more beneficial content to add to this.

Thank you so much this helps a lot and brings a lot of insights and also shows a completely different approach on how to take an interview. I recently applied for a job and received an email telling me that my experience is not enough for the job but they would like to keep in touch with me, I wonder how should I respond to this? My intuition tells me to ask some questions but I don't think that it will be appropriate, or should I just thank them and followed them on social media?
