Many great individual performances during the Ashes but, for me, Moen has to take team player of the series for England. Came out of retirement for it, agreed to bat number 3 (and scored some handy runs there), took wickets and just generally a bloody legend 🙌🙌

He averaged over 51 with the ball in the series though. He was in 8th place for England bowlers by average in the series and in 7th place for batting average (average 26). Some useful contributions with bat and ball but nowhere near good enough for player of the series award.

Woakes was even better than people have been giving him credit for. To demonstrate - Woakes's dismissals in the series included: Labusghagne on 21 Head on 39 Marsh on 118 Khawaja on 43 Marsh on 28 Warner on 32 Marsh on 51 Warner on 28 Warner on 24 Smith on 71 Warner on 60 Khawaja on 72 Smith on 54 Out of his 19 wickets across three tests, 13 of them were of TOP 6 BATSMEN WHO HAD SCORED 20 RUNS OR MORE. Dismissing Top class batsmen who are set and in are the absolute most premium wickets. Dismissing Smith between 50 and 75, which Woakes did twice at the Oval is statistically one of the highest value scalps in the game's history. Last 6 previous times he passed 50 in tests before then he'd only failed to make a century once. For reference, Starc as leading wicket taker in the series got 7 such wickets over 4 games. Not a knock on Starc, who was also great but that's just how important Woakes was.

Fun Fact: Moen was a specialist batsman and he started bowling off spin when his club needed a bowler. he plays at the top. he underachieved a lot

There's a lot of Australians complaining about the ball change but, while I do think there's something to that, this was the real turning point and it happened long after that. The replacement ball was at least 40 overs old at the absolute minimum by this stage and Smith and Head had just put on 95 together, so the ball was far from unplayable. Before Head's wicket, Australia probably looked favourites but England were the better team from this point on.

Nothing wrong with the ball when Smith and Head were smashing it to the boundary ball after ball. I actually think the original ball was faulty, it looked like the seam was coming apart and it was going out of shape badly. Something about these new er Dukes ball of late they aren't as good as they used to be. A dukes ball will last 80 overs and still look great most of the time, they are very hard balls with a pronounced seam, that first ball looked like it had been run over by a truck and then had 200 overs bowled with it.

@@fiddlestickzmuzik, I may well be telling you something you already know but, for everyone's benefit, there have been issues with the Dukes ball for the last couple of years, since COVID forced changes in the manufacturing process. The balls definitely haven't been as durable as they were and have been more inconsistent in their behaviour and have also generally swung less than they used to. The company identified the cause of some of the issues and addressed them, but it seems like there's still an issue with durability, but it's too late to do anything about it once they discover that that is the case. It is often the case that a team will try to get the ball changed if the one they have is not moving the way they want. It's not limited to Dukes balls and it's not limited to England. This is certainly not the first time a team has had the ball changed and the new one moved more than the old. Australia had the benefit of such a change earlier in this very series, but I think a lot of Australian fans have scrubbed that from their memory for convenience. The available pictures do suggest that, in this case, the replacement ball looked newer than the one it was replacing. Why that happened, I don't know, but neither do all the Australians claiming it was a conspiracy to cheat Australia. We'll probably never know, as it's not the sort of thing the ICC comment on publicly.

Ashes-2023 was indeed a memorable test series ever. I still can't forget the last passage of play on the last day of the 5th test at the Kia Oval. It was around 5pm local time, the aussies were 264-3 and were cruising for the famous victory as Smith & Head were well set with 95 runs' partnership. But then Moeen triggered the mayhem, he coaxed Head to slip. Next over, Woakes scalped Smith. Moeen took his turn in the following over and Marsh messed up the sharp delivery to the keeper. Once again, Woakes claimed his turn in the very next over by alluring Starc to slip cordon. After a lull of several overs, Moeen returned with yet another lethal delivery on which the aussie captain was caught by the english captain. Now, only two final nails needed in the coffin and the magician Broad did the needful after touching on the two bails by his fingers.

Sensational bowling from England putting the Australians under there's nothing like a test series against the Aussies. It's been a great and very memorable ashes series no question. It's certainly had its moments great moments like Stewart Broads fairytale ending to his test career, Ben Stokes 2nd innings at Lords 154 outstanding. Not forgetting the stumping of Johnny Birstow by Alex Carey, England coming back to level the series at 2 2. Only Old Trafford was a draw due to the English weather rain, when England were on top form with the bat and ball 🏏. Not forgetting the Australians who played their part in the test series with their contributions, making it a great spectral for all cricket fans 👍 👏 .

Unfortunately we didn't win the ashes but what a series it was best moment seeing broad get those 2 wicket to end the ahest to a 2-2draw. Every time there lookes like a team was on top the otherr team turned it around. We would've won the series in the 3rd at old trafford but due to rain it ended with a drawn march so Australia retained the ashes win luck with the rain. As the holders before if the ashes ends up with a draw the retain they ashes.

At 4.49pm England were facing a 3-1 (or at the very least 2-1) defeat and looked dead in the water! Australia had 7 wickets left and could easily have made the runs or played for a draw, with so many good, experienced batsman left. At 5.06pm Australia has lost the game and morally the entire series. How quickly great sport can change! Seemingly in the blink of an eye!
