0:21 - No Hybrid AWD
This is a little bit annoying, but the base engine here is a 2.5 hybrid - it’s the one we have here
And you can only get the 2.5 hybrid in FWD’
If you want AWD you have to go up to the 2.0 turbo, which of course is less efficient
0:44 - Tech stuff
I will preface this point by saying at this price point i’m not really too bothered by some of these things
But you don’t have adaptive cruise
You don’t have active lane keep or lane centering
But you do have blind spot monitor
No 360 camera
No native navigation
No ambient lighting
And the center screen is kinda small, but all mavericks come standard with Apple Car Play and Android Auto and realistically that’s good enough for me
1:18 - The Sunroof Thing
So, this is the Lariat trim, which is the top trim
This is also equipped with the Lariat Lux package, which is several thousand dollars
And yet, if I want a sunroof I still have to pay another $1000
1:36 - Truck stuff
This one is kind of hard to discuss because at the end of the day it’s the lightest of light duty trucks, it’s more a commuter truck, but since it is a truck we have to talk about truck stuff
You get this configuration exclusively, with the 4.5 foot bed
The tailgate isn’t damped but is height adjustable and has bottle openers
You get a max payload of 1500 lbs, not bad
You get a 120V outlet, nice
But your towing maxes out at 2000 lbs
If you go up to the turbo engine your towing increases to 4000 lbs
HOWEVER the Hyundai Santa Cruz, the main competitor to this car brings 5000 lbs of towing

Good:
2:23 - It’s cheap
This is the smallest and cheapest thing Ford sells
It starts at $22,600 which gets the hybrid and 45 mpg - insane
This tester is loaded up to just about the max and comes in at $35k
And at that price it’s bringing a lot of great stuff
Also these things are still selling used for just about what they are new, if not a little more
2:58 - The Drive
I put this on the good side of the video because it’s just fine - it’s not amazing and its not terrible but again we have to look through the lens of how cheap this thing is
Sure there’s a bit of cabin noise
Sure it’s not super fast
This 2.5 hybrid makes 190 hp and 155 lbft
But I’ve also been getting almost 45 mpg all week
Of course the turbo is quicker, but i don’t really care here
The visibility is great
The ride is decent
The transition between gas and electric is really smooth
With music on you’re not really going to notice..unless you floor it
And it’s just super easy to live with
I do wish it had adaptive cruise and lane centering, but again…price…so it’s fine
The one thing I will say is the brakes are very bitey so that takes a couple days to adjust to
3:59 - Interior
The interior her is really cool and unique and it’s not even the crazy blue and white and orange one!
loads of different textures
loads of different colors
Blueish
orange rubber
exposed hex bolts
This is the less interesting interior spec but still a really impressive way to make a cheap cabin feel special
4:37 - Surprisingly spacious
This Maverick is about the same length as a Honda Accord…and yes that includes the length of the 4.5 foot bed and the comically long rear bumper
And yet I can still mostly fit in the back seat at 6’1”
I mean, yes my knees hit the front seat so i have to kind of straddle the seat BUT for this size of truck to still offer 4 full doors and be able to put 2 adults back here is a huge win
And the headroom is great back here and the front cabin is super spacious and just fine
5:18 - Looks cool
I mean it’s not the most beautiful thing i’ve ever laid eyes on, but i think it’s handsome and unmistakably a truck, unlike the Santa Cruz
Led running lights
grille accent goes into headlight
cactus gray paint
cool dark gray wheels in primacy tires (mileage)
Lariat front fender
black wing mirrors
code lock on driver door
LED taillights
Maverick stamped into tailgate
rear bumper sticks out as far as my chin
Overall, i think it looks nice
6:03 - Storage
There is a bunch of clever storage everywhere in here
Your door bins are designed to fit water bottles
Your center console is a collection of cupholders, trays, and bins
There’s even storage bins on your dash
And of course the rear seats fold up for more cubbies
They also fold down, but you’re not really fitting anything back there
And of course there’s the bed with its own little cubby

They will have an all wheeler plug in hybrid. I own the Maverick, and all the things you don’t like at things I don’t care about. The truck is great and just focus on the good things because it is the best car for the money. 8k miles on mine so far.

Ford already said they likely won't do a plug in hybrid. The only difference is a much bigger battery which increases the vehicle's weight and cost.

It’s convenient to have depending on your situation. I wouldn’t mind it to help me park both vehicles in my small garage, helps with parallel parking etc etc. Also if you’re paying almost $10K for the highest trim level then you’d want all around view, like what most high trim vehicles do

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve scratched under my front bumper on those concrete parking stops when you move into a spot. I would love to have surround view or front camera as well. The OP is just looking to get likes

to me, all that matters on a truck is simplicity, reliability, and utility. if you care about road noise, mpg, tech, and safety nanny features, there are plenty of SUVs you can go look at.

I don't care if it has a sunroof and a lot of other people don't as well. Most other models and/or brands have a sunroof as a separate option to add rather than having it included in a package deal (ie lux package). Also adaptive cruise and lane centering is a separate package as well for not that much more.

the bottle openers are actually brackets to attach a soft drop kit for your tailgate to avoid slamming it down... believe rough country makes it.

I have the Ecoboost and the brakes are just a grabby too. It's really my only one complaint when it comes to the driving experience. I found the lack of sunroof in the Lariat package to be a plus. In my F-150 I rarely used it and until the seal was fixed I had a few episodes where water leaked through the sunroof (not a fun time in the car wash).

I don't know anyone who wants, or would miss features like adaptive cruise control and lane keep alerts. break-slamming and redline acceleration with ACC and the steering wheel beeping at you and fighting you while driving? these features are just the worst

I walked into my local Ford dealer in the spring of 2022 to look at these and ended up paying the retainer fee and custom ordering a hybrid Lariat. I had heard that it could be up to 5 months before I'd get my order. I couldn't believe it. Here I am well over a year later and I still don't have a Maverick and probably never will. The worst thing about the Maverick is dealing with Ford and my dealer. I'll never do that again. My order is still in at Ford, but I've since bought a '23 Colorado that I love.

I ordered through Riverside Ford in Tulsa, there was no retainer fee and they sold me the truck much under MSRP because of rebates. You need a different dealer, probably in the Midwest.

Solid review, a trucklette that isn't for everyone. Fits my needs, more than my F150 did. Ford has gotten the other manufactures scrambling.

I have the same truck and there is a button at the end of the turn signal stalk 1:06 to activate the lane keep assist. You're right about the adaptave cruise control though..

Also, my favorite feature is when you are driving and you take your foot off the gas pedal and the car doesn’t go forward. I just upgraded from a Mustang and sometimes I would go to scratch my leg and I would almost rear the car on front of me.

I actually enjoyed your fair review of the Maverick. I have a 2023 XLT Hybrid with a few options, waited a year and I'm very happy with it. Is it perfect, no - but it's perfect for me and that's all that matters. I only hope it turns out to be reliable but time will tell. I really think Ford nailed it on this model as the waiting lists prove the demand was there. Just enough truck to use around the house but the mpg are just fabulous.

Maverick with all the goodies - AWD, non-cloth seats, sunroof etc is $40k, A Ridgeline is only few grad more.

People saying it is very affordable and yet showing us a Lariat model. For reference I bought my F-150 XLT with the 302a Luxury package in 2018 for $34K out the door license and registration included.

The more combinations you’re allowed to do the more expensive a vehicle can be. Scion learned that even though their vehicles are very affordable due to extremely limited options, people were either willing to pay for extras or paying more for different configurations. Mavericks, though dirt cheap, to increase production rates requires options to be standard. But will cost more just because more options are added on but compared to have added on by choice you’ll save only a few

It's cheap? Good luck finding any (at least in my area) that aren't marked up $8k plus. Was looking at some used ones earlier today and came across a base XL with 20,000 miles on it listed for $31k. Crazy.

Ordered mine from a rural GA dealer, MSRP/$100 deposit. Did have to wait a long time for delivery. Waiting wasn't as bad as getting gouged with "market adjustment".

If you “need” a tailgate damper perhaps a minivan would be a better option. It’s a small truck with a light tailgate. Don’t argue with me. You know it’s true and to deny it is just lying to yourself.

You would have thought Ford would have fixed the engine fire problem prone to the 2022's in the 2023 Maverick but they didn't. Just read where recall notices going out to 2023 owners soon! Very Disappointing Ford!

I just want a high mpg vehicle when I'm not towing and enough towing capacity to haul most of what I need. The Maverick seems to offer that, but my God is it impossible to get. Ford really shot itself in both feet and knees with their all-electric bet. They need to kick the dealers to the curb and go to a direct-buy model, cut the msrp on their basic trucks in half, and stop trying to stick things like those bed bottle openers onto their vehicles to try and make up for lackluster performance.

It’s cheap. And so is the price. I personally have driven in one and I definitely am not a fan. But cars are expensive and if you want something new, that’s gonna come with a warranty. This is a good value. To me, it is more of a vehicle that a city agency would use for their employees. Cheap and disposable.

The newest Hybrid has an model with 4 wheel drive? This truck shares the Bronco and Escape pieces parts, so, I would imagine what is available there will find it's way to the Marvick? The New Marvick can also come with a charging port, extra duty battery, can operate as an EV, short range? Price for base is up, which is a shame. Trucks are just priced too high for most people who can't write them off their taxes, as a business expense. The Range is way over priced, might as well go for the money into the F Trucks. I remember when a F100, F150 were affordable as a second vehicle. I believe I saw Ford is working on those brakes? Offering software updates to improve? As you say problem of regeneration of power via of braking, a hallmark of EVs, hybrids, you have to adjust to the experience. Towing, pick your poison, great gas mileage or pay aka high torque equals lower gas mileage. High torque in front wheel drive causing streeing problems as you fight torque. I recall a 440 cu inch, I think it was an Eldorado Cadillac a 1967 that had that problem. We got one in shop class in 1969. It had jumped it's timing chain. Read that as expensive to fix. That car could be had with 500 horse power. I am wondering, cab noise level, just a known problem of a CVT at work? Big 👍 for Ford for building at this price point. Gets people over to the Ford brand, showing they are competitive with foreign brands.

My problem with the Maverick is they nickel and dime you to death for every feature. Once you put in all the basic features you expect it to have standard, and perhaps some extras you'd like to have on top, it ends up no longer being a cheap value leader.

But that’s the reason why it’s cheap in the first place. You want the vehicle to cost a lot less but also include features you “think” is “standard” to a car, what kind of cheapskate are you. Like complaining about pizza places that charge extra for other toppings.

@@MrMikeDao if the only reason it's cheap is because they take stuff away, then it's not really a better value. You're paying less because you're getting less. Option it out like a base Santa Cruz, compare the price, and it starts to make sense.

@@MrMikeDao my standard is a basic work truck. It's what I drive now. I just don't see it as an amazing value people make it out to be. It's cheaper, yes, but only by lacking content. With it starting at nearly $25k now it just doesn't strike me as an amazing value.

@@palebeachbum Not trying to pile on but what are you expecting? My '23 was $24.5K, hybrid/360/hitch. No it won't do F150 type hauling. Owned a '20 F150 XL, reg cab/short bed/power windows, about as cheap a truck as you could get at the time (MSRP 32K - now 36K). Yes, the Maverick not an amazing value now like it was when it first came out but IMO a good buy.

I can put my bicycle into my crossover SUV just as easily, and I need to remove the front wheel as well, so no benefit for the Mav. The only reason for a open-bed 4.5-ft pickup is if I wanted to haul a palm tree in a huge pot.

Why not mention that you CAN get lane centering, adaptive cruise, etc? By ommiting this info, you are misinforming people by making it seem like these options aren't available at all. And $1000 for a sunroof is a good price, and have it be a stand alone option is and has been a standard in the auto industry for years. Why call out the Maverick for this?

Fair points as you can get those items. How about the ability to open your garage door, or a powered passenger seat or even heated rear seats? None are available and the lack of a Homelink to pair with a garage door operator is almost a sin. Many very good options and functional items so that is good news.

I doubt you will ever see a 2 door model, the EPA would require much higher MPG's. The El Camino was body on frame and rear wheel drive, this thing is more like a Dodge Rampage.
