Going on adventures and introducing my kids to challenges is a conscious parenting choice. Ever since I have been a dad I have introduced our kids to hard things early while being by their side.
Documenting and sharing these adventures has become part of a bigger purpose to both entertain and inspire others to live life to the fullest.
Grab my Playbook for $47.00. This is an in depth guide, covering everything from gear and clothing information to tips and tricks for teaching skiing.
How to Teach Your Kids to Ski ➡️ keap.page/aux172/how-to-teach...
In this Guide I will cover:
- How to teach your kids to ski safely and have a blast doing it.
- How to spend more time on the snow and less time worrying.
- How to show up prepared to the ski hill - the first time and every time.
- My "fun first, no tears" approach.

I'm a fan of spending MOST of our time on easy terrain. "Maximum speed on minimum terrain" is the goal for 90-95% of out time on the mountain. The other 5-10% is a mix of steeper terrain. Does it have to be Double Blacks? Of course not. This run is short of a fun and novel run because of the tires and ropes and I knew she'd enjoy the rope and I can always help her down when she gets tired skiing. You can tell by her demeanour that she still had some stem left even after the run in the park!

I’ve been watching you since Aida first started skiing. Your parenting ethos of coaching your kids through challenging situations rather than avoiding the challenging situations is something I will adopt when I have children. My parents were extremely cautious with me and that has effected my skiing ability and everyday life, I have been skiing for 9 years and I know I’m a good skier yet I’m still anxious of black runs and I’m also a very anxious person. Ignore what anyone says about the “risk” you’re taking, I’m an example of what happens if you don’t show your kids you can be safe even if you’re in a situation with some risk. You’re doing great!

I love your approach. Life is learning how to overcome adverse conditions, whether in the wild or in the work place. Learning to overcome obstacles early prepares you for the vagaries of life as you go through it. All too often I see parents preventing their children from encountering difficult or scary situations instead of guiding them through the situation. Well done.

My parents were terrible parents that, among other things, were very very strict, and tried to prevent me from learning and experiencing things, so I rebelled big time! Then they went to the complete opposite extreme with my sister, spoiling her rotten, and she turned out to be an even worse disaster than I did! A wimpering simp who wants everything handed to her, and refuses to stretch or exert herself in any way. But in those days there was almost no public discussion of child rearing. In the the 60s and before, many people took an all or nothing approach. There was only 1 book in the world about the subject, by a Dr Spock, and it was mainly about babies and medical issues, not much on the psychology of a healthy child. Of course I forgive my parents, but I wish so much they had been like this family!

So sweet! Since I didn't learn how to ski until my late 30s, I'm so impressed at how calm you are with all your kids. You are all amazing skiers. I remember once when I was learning how to ski seeing a 4 or 5 year old doing something I was terrified of and thought, if they can do it, so can I. Not really true with skiing - I learned. Little kids can way out perform me all the time! Thanks for sharing!

My heart was in my throat the whole time Adia was coming down! Love how you helped all three with different techniques. Until the very end, Adia was quite confident and chatting about everything under the sun. If you don’t introduce children to challenges, they will grow up soft. They won’t face the fear or feel the excitement of accomplishing the task. Dad, your awesome!!! 💪 God Bless your Family ❤️🙏🏂

30 years back I did the same sorts of things with my kids at that age. I firmly believed that having to challenge fear and make good decisions needs to be taught and experienced. When you accomplish something really challenging we say "ego goes up 3 points" but the kid also realises they can tackle tough things and succeed. It's a valuable life lesson. Skiing is great because if you pick the right places, the consequences are usually just a lot of snow in places you didn't expect and sometimes a long climb back up. We have a family anecdote when our oldest was 5 did something similar and half way down he decided it was scary and yelled at us that we were "irresponsible parents!" a few minutes later he was skiing the rest of the way down then that evening was proudly telling everyone in the lodge how he had skiied that double diamond.

Bravo sir. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I’m a southerner from Louisiana and learned to ski when I was 40 years old. Snow and mountains were very foreign to me and intimidating. However, I always wanted to learn how to ski and challenging myself to do so was one of the hardest and most rewarding things I have ever done in my life. No risk, no reward. Now I’m an avid skier and still try to challenge myself out there on the mountain, searching for that reward. There is nothing wrong with encouraging your kids to take on challenges or something that’s scary. They will be able to conquer anything life throws at them because of it. Semper Fi and let the haters hate. They have been found wanting..

Back in the mid 80s i was a liftee at Mt Norquay in Banff. There was a local 4-5 yr old who’s dad was a ski coach, and he would ski the green chair lift by himself. You would have to boost him onto the chairlift because he was so small. But this kid could parallel ski and pole plant with his turns. On a day off i was skiing, and bumped into this kid in the lodge with his dad. The kid asked me if i could take him on the Big Chair (double black diamond) for a couple of runs, as his dad was coaching and couldnt. His dad said the kid had to go with an adult and if I was willing, i could take him. This kid had very little problem skiing the moguls on the double black diamond 38 degree slope. It was something to behold.

I really needed this video. I am a strong believer of allowing my kids to take on challenges. This means my son trusts me when it comes to risk assessment. He has also started to show massive improvement in risk assessment of his own. My son has started to take on a steady diet of blacks himself because they are new and challenge his ever improving skills. Your philosophies align with how I would like to raise my kids. My next challenge is getting my younger child skiing and balancing their abilities.

Your kids, for their short time of life, are so confident and that is a credit to the parenting skills. So many people that are not used to go out of their comfort zone are probably be the ones thinking the kids shouldn’t be allowed outside the small slope and some even thinking kids should just be playing on the playground. Great job 👏

I really like your approach, I think it is important for kids to learn to push boundaries/take some risks while they are still small: It is much safer that way! We're Norwegian, but the 1991-92 winter we lived in Utah, so our sone who turned 2 just after we arrived, got to ski in Alta, Solitude, Snowbird, Park City, Sundance etc every weekend. By Feb/Mar he was going down the blue runs, with people yelling down from the lifts: "How old is that kid?", from above he was just a helmet with a pair of skis underneath. We would reply "He's two, but that's OK: We're from Norway!" This was just after Norway had really cleaned up in the Albertville, France Olympics, so we felt it was important to remind everyone that Yes, Norwegians are born with their skis on. 🙂

Wow great job, CONQUERED the tires hill!!!! In the three almost four years that I first started watching this The Mountain Life Addia was skiing down by your house steps, barely 1 or 1 1/2 years old. Never have you ever pushed, coaxed, your children to do anything that was too dangerous, too scary, or something they did not want to do...We need MORE parents that teach so much confidence, manners, sportsmanship as you are as their FATHER!!❤ The experiences are the best teacher, you are always there helping with your wife or your parents. YOU SHOULD BE COMMENTED, YOUR WIFE TOO!!!! Thank you for sharing with us,.

You are AMAZING and so are yours kids. I wish I had someone close to me just like you, maybe I'd feel more confident to try more challenging blue runs instead of only living in the green runs because I'm afraid and have low confidence, even though my coaches say I have the skills. Thank you so much for this awesome video.

I was watcing this and thinking "good on you to throw challenges at Adia". Not once was I thinking, "wow that was a bad choice". I would have never learned if I was not challenged. I worked for ski hills in a office environment for many years and ski very little every year. I took on a senior management position and the president of the ski hill insisted that I must ski at least three - four times a week. Every time I went out, he joined me and gave me challenge every time. I went from a confident blue run skier to a very confident black diamond skier in one season. It was step by step, little challenge at a time and that is what builds character and life skills. Adia will continue to challenge herself even when you stop pushing her.

Great video. I love seeing how you kept the children safe - ish while making them feel confident. You are doing a wonderful job Eric, teaching them skills and how to tackle tricky problems haha. The children will never forget going down over the tyres. And when your little girl has had enough, she is bundled into safe arms. Fantastic.

That's quite the entrance to the run with the tires. My 5 year old just skied his first double black at Cypress Mountain yesterday. He skied the tight section faster than me!
