What a journey! Join me as I work to replace the hard drive and battery in my original 4th Generation iPod Photo, and try to bring it back to life!
I encountered a few problems a long the way and genuinely didn’t know if I’d be able to finish this video, but it all came together and was a ton of fun!
Time Markers:

1:34 - New Parts
3:00 - The Repair Process

9:12 - Fixing the Hold Switch
10:35 - The Final Test

And looking back, I probably should have just gone with an updated SSD 🤦🏻‍♂️

This was so relaxing, delightful and hilarious at the same time! Did not know restoring an iPod could be so fun and an adventure haha So crazy looking back at how it was built and how modular it was. So different than now and all the tech were spoiled with these days. I remember playing those games so much too and how cool and modern iPods felt back then. So much nostalgia! Awesome video Tom!

Hello, I have an ipod A1059, I restarted it and the logo connected to the power, I do not have an original charger or a Mac, I connect it with other chargers and other PCs, it remains the same, how do I solve that?

Can anyone help me? I have the exact same iPod A1059, however my screen stopped working and tried replacing it with a new one unfortunately the screen doesn’t display any text, however the back light does come on. I’m not sure how to fix it. Is it as simple as doing a factory reset or is it something else wrong?
@tombuck
@tombuck 3 жыл бұрын
I can't say for sure, so maybe someone else can, but that sounds like there's a poor connection with the display cable that provides the info (or possible a faulty cable).

Cheaper to buy a iPhone for music than to buy or even fix an iPod. I have two iPhones, One is a 6 gen with 16gb and one a 5 gen with 64gb. They both were 25 dollars each. The 5th gen holds every song I have with room to spare.
@DamonChuckLover89
@DamonChuckLover89 2 жыл бұрын
There are people that want to disengage from the iPhone for music. Not everyone wants to keep both together. I personally for instance love the fact that all my music and podcasts and audiobooks is on my iPod mini with the 200GB SD card and new battery and I can leave my phone at home when I want.

For anyone watching - The 4th gen and earlier iPod's have a physical switch that can be flicked side to side, to lock and unlock. The hold switch on the rear case has a fork that sits either side of the switch and moves the switch back and forwards. 50% chance old mate here didn't try and actually flick the switch across to unlock it. If you have the switch in one position when you open the case, make sure it's in the same position and lines up with the fork on the rear case when you close it back up. They can be finicky and sometimes won't line up properly at first.
@thomas5
@thomas5 3 жыл бұрын
thats irrelevant, i have done countless repairs on 4th gens and never had to do that. it just doesnt matter. when the software reboots, it sees that the hold switch is on or off, not whether or not it was on or off before.
@Nick-Kingsley
@Nick-Kingsley 3 жыл бұрын
@@thomas5 Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the hold switch keeping it locked into one or the other then?
@thomas5
@thomas5 3 жыл бұрын
@@Nick-Kingsley im talking about when its restarted (hard reset) or on a cold boot. You can also tell that the one in the video was faulty because when there is not hold switch connected to a 4th gen, it defaults as locked unlike later models that are set to the last thing set
