As kids, we had backyard shows, carnivals, backyard campouts, A&W yes! Ride our bikes to the Dairy Queen. Play Barbies all day under a big shade tree.

Our local ski mountain (in New England) has 2 days a year that are "county days" where all residents of the county get a free pass to ride the chair lift and the mountain coaster for free. We had so much fun as a family! Community events are such a great sourse of free fun.

Love the list of ideas. Here are a few activities that we have done as a family. Backyard science scavenger hunt: the teams can only find things in nature. I am a former science teacher so I not only had my children and the neighborhood children seeking things of nature, but I did this with my elementary school children when I taught. It was the best review lesson on the eco systems. At my aunt and uncle's farm in Illinois, my cousins taught my brother and I how to ride a young tree sapling that was located in the 100 acre woods. The rule for selecting a sapling was strict because the tree had to be at least 20 ft. tall and 3-5 inches around. The participate waited for the others to pull it down so he/she could get on. Holding tight, the tree was released and the wild ride began. {Okay, I see NOW it may have been a bit dangerous, but we were young and thought we could live through anything. LOL} Obstacle course done on the equipment in a park. When we would do this, we found many other children [with their parents permission] at the park wanted to play. Visit a different national park or city park each weekend and take a picnic. Toss bean bags into a hoopla hoop or do horse shoes (use metal ones for the older children & adults and heavy plastic ones for the younger ones), & after the game, have family and visitors make their own ice cream sundae. You supply vanilla, chocolate & strawberry ice creams while visitors bring various toppings for the sundae. Take a drive to different farmer's markets in your location and buy foods for lunch. For young children {older ones would think of this as work} , plant flowers or seeds for them to watch during the growing season. This is looking like a novel so I will close now. Thanks for sharing your ideas and reminding me of my wonderful summers when I was a child.

When you said hundred acre wood it immediately reminded me of Winnie the Pooh, because that was what his woods was called. Also, planting seeds and watching them grow reminded me that my boys had nature notebooks and one of the things we did was divide a page into fourths and draw a tree in spring, summer, winter, and fall to show how the tree changed throughout the seasons.

Our kids loved it when each of us took a turn at being blind folded and finding the other in doors..especially in the winter when you couldn't go out much ..they would get close to the one that was bind folded and tap them on the shoulder ..move away really fast ..and they'd just giggle ...my husband and I would also set back to back on the floor holding a plastic bowl on our heads and the kids would toss socks to see who could get the most points ..we raised our children without television..so we came up with all sorts of things ..we would also hum and play name that tune ..I could go on and on ..lol our kids are in their 40's..we did the same with our grandchildren ..they are all grown ..I sure miss those days

There were two games I remember loving. We'd fill dish soap bottles with water and draw with the water. The sun would erase it and we'd draw again. We also played a game called MISSISSIPPI. You use chalk and draw a GIANT square in a large area --- like driveway. (We used the street. Ha Ha) Then you draw a squiggly Mississippi River across the middle. Then the kids would take turns, hopping from one end to the other on ONE FOOT and you'd have to JUMP with your hopping one foot across the Mississippi. If you made it across that big square, not touching the Mississippi and you didn't put your foot down------ you got to stand anywhere in the big square and draw a square around your feet and put your name in the square. The first person who had a completed bridge of squares--- won the game. Great HOURS of fun!!!! Lots of laughs. You find out who is the best one foot hopper. Ha Ha Oh--- and when you went across the second time (after winning a square with your name) you got to put both feet in your square and REST. The more squares--- the more rest. Ha Ha So cool.

We live in MN. When the kids were young we made our lunches or brought a picnic. I would spend only money on gas. We would start early in the morning and spend 15 mins at a different park. We live in the Iron Range or Arrowhead, the northeast part of the state. We would map off different free parks within the different towns. We would visit these town parks. Or if there was a special landmark that was free, we would also visit that too. Some towns had more than one park. We would spend only 15 mins at each one. So this could go on for days. I also carried a box in the back for things we could need at parks, lakes and campgrounds. We would visit these different places and come equipped with items you may use like a blow up swimming animal, sand toys, portable bbq, horse shoes, balls, and the like. I called this "Holiday in a box". We kept theses things in the back of the car just in case. We would visit campgrounds and enjoy the swimming lakes without having to pay for any camping. Plus it was fun to pick out the best sites just in case we may come back and actually camp. Also we did a lot of berry picking of blueberries, service berries, raspberries and strawberries. Some at farms and in the wild.

Great tips! The game you call "Red light/Green light", we used to call "British Bulldog" in the UK! We used to play with skipping ropes, hula hoops, stilts, those hoops with a ball and string attached that you would put through one ankle and swing, jumping over the ball (I have NO idea what that is called!), we would play with super-soakers, play football, basketball, race one-another, make a mud cafe, create hiding places and dens in the garden (under trees and bushes), swing on a swing set, play in an portable shallow pool, play with the hose, draw with chalk and one summer - we deep cleaned a bus stop! The things we did before mobile phones and the internet! Xx
@UndertheMedian
@UndertheMedian 3 жыл бұрын
Stilts! I haven't tried those in years! It reminded me of something else I'd also forgotten about - pogo sticks. I was really bad at them. They took a lot of balance. I know exactly what you are talking about with the ball attached to the hoop. Was it tether ball?
@kaelaleedaley
@kaelaleedaley 3 жыл бұрын
@@UndertheMedian Pogo! I had completely forgotten about that too! Amazing what comes back! It's like tetherball for your legs, I just Googled it and they call it "skip ball" on Amazon! It was something we discovered in the US on one of our holidays and I immediately fell in love with it! In the UK, we used to play a similar jumping game but with skipping ropes, where one child would whip around the rope at ground level and all others had to jump over it or get whipped by it! Xx

When I lived in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mtns at the edge of Silicon Valley, my son and I used to go hiking, and we'd find things like twised roots, pieces of shed bark from various trees and oddly shaped pieces of vines. We'd take them home, clean them, spray them with some kind of sealant, and thus decorated our apartment.

When I was a kid... I played with hot wheels, a baseball and mitt, and a chinese jump rope all by myself. For summer water fun, we had a slip and slide and a Mr Wiggle. When I had a child of my own and it was just him and me, I took him near the airport and watched the planes land once in a while but mostly we watched tv and read books. I taught my son to read when he was 2 years old. He loves to read. By the way...it is so funny... When Larry opens his eyes wide, and nods yes when talking about getting a dog...Larry looks so much like my son. And something I just thought of that can be enjoyed by one or many....go and feed and watch squirrels play... Just yesterday at work, I saw a bunch of squirrels chasing one squirrel that had a slice of pizza in its mouth... It would get dropped and another would pick it up and then they would all start chasing that one and over and over...I laughed so hard watching this. It was like watching a live version of a cartoon. Something that could be fun for a family to do is have a race...a wheel race... If everyone knows how to use these... Roller blade or skate so far, then switch to skateboard' s, then maybe a wheel barrow then a bicycle ..or even a wheelchair ..use anything that has wheels.. Another kind of race...a trivia math race... Host gives clues of say the title of a book or movie or something...then when the player thinks they got the right answer..the race to the book shelf to find the book...inside the book is a number .. Do this a few times..(one number per person) then add the numbers up..highest number wins...or some version of it.

My now adult kids favourite memory of my Mom was the time she planned a family Olympics for them and their cousins complete with competitions and medals. The medals were made of cardboard covered with foil and were awarded not for being best at a sport but for being the loudest cheerer or helping someone else finish a task. So much fun for all the ages.

Our version of red light green light was someone stands with their back to everyone and everyone else lines up. The 1 person says greenlight and everyone runs towards the person and stop when the 1 person says red light and goes again when they say green. The 1st person to get to the person facing away is the winner and then stands there and says green and red light. The game you described we called red rover and the saying was red rover, red rover, send one right over. My kids play hide and seek, Simon says, corn hole, frisbee. My girls are trying to learn to hola hoop. The kids also play their version of soccer. No rules, just kicking it around the yard and running after it.

I get my books and audiobooks from the local library for FREE and have them sent to my used Kindle, also for free. The cheapest fun I had with my twins when they were little was running under a sheet or blanket on a windy day. I got the idea from the "parachute" activity at our local parenting group, but since there was only one of me (instead of 20 other parents) when we were alone I'd use a sheet with the wind to help blow it around. There is a book titled something like 100 Outdoor Activities for Kids and I used it religiously.

Yes!--A&W baby mugs (we called them kiddie mugs, because of course we weren't babies)! We were kids in South Bend, IN, and after going to the downtown farmers market, we sometimes went to the A&W by the river. That was back when you parked and the waitress brought out your order on a tray that hooked into the driver's window opening. Larry, the almost-antiques are seriously cool--especially the personal aspects.

Hula hooping! My kids use my old one and hula or try at least (!) for hours. Hoops are also good as components in obstacle races and are practically indestructible! We have breakfast picnics in the back garden in the summer holidays too when the weather permits... just a bit different and fun than lunch or dinner picnics. We used to use washing up liquid bottles as water pistols as kids too - great for a good soaking, I agree :-) Larry, I enjoy knowing what you have going on in the background - really awesome family history this week.

I think your red light green light is my red rover. My red light green light is where the “IT” person stands at one end of a property (finish line) and everyone else starts opposite end. “IT” person has back to the players and say Green Light. And the players start advancing. The IT person goes through the sequence of lights at will. But if the IT person catches a player still advancing on STOP, they have to go back to the starting line. “IT” has to keep their heads on a swivel! Whoever reaches “IT” first is next one to be “it”. Fun game in the wintertime is to stomp out a giant circle in the snow. Then stomp out a giant + / x in the middle, attaching to the circle. Players can only move around the circle. “IT” starts in the center. It announces GO. “It” can only move within the straight lines. Once “IT” tags a player, they become the next “IT”. This is a great game if you want the kids to ware off A LOT of energy! It’s an exhausting game, but fun! Don’t make the circle too big, or it’s no fun for “IT”, they will never tag anyone. Also, EVERYONE has to stomp out the circle and + / x !
@UndertheMedian
@UndertheMedian 3 жыл бұрын
I love the "IT" game idea. I've never heard of it. Other people wrote about how they played Red Light Green Light, too. I do think that I wound up with a weird mash up in my mind about the differences between Red Light Green Light and Red Rover. I'm going to look up some "rule" on the games and explain them in an upcoming video. It's been fun to take a trip down memory lane with everyone.

We acted a scene from a book on the Mayflower. One son enthusiastically gathered props, while the other said, "I can't improvise. We must have a script!" It taught them pretty quickly to rely on their sibling's strengths. Another book we did was, Peter and the Wolf. We read the book and then we listened to the music. They acted out the story while the music played in the background. They cast our black lab, Shelby, as the wolf. The poor dog was so confused as to why the boys were suddenly running away from her. She happily ran after then, thinking it was a new game. Our oldest son loved to learn soliloquies from Shakespeare and act them out. He even did it at college for talent night - much to the delight of his fellow students.

For non-pandemic times: we had a fun game called "knot mommy" (translation from German if it sounds weird for you). One kid had to cover their eyes like in hide-and-seek and get a little distance, and the rest of the group would first join hands in a circle and then quietly entangle with each other without losing the circle. First you e.g. make an 8 and then go from there. When there can be no more entanglements/knots you call "knot mommy!" and the kid covering their eyes has to untangle you until you have a circle again. You can also have a wheelbarrow race with one person being the wheelbarrow. Another cheap option is a ring-throwing game.
