if a Hero of the Space Marines is mortally wounded but not dead, he can be put into a sarcophagus that keeps whatever may be left of him alive, atleast his brain. the sarcophagus is then put into a dreadnaught where it connects the Hero to the dreadnaught and allows the Marine to Fight on in his new form. as far as I know there is no Limit as to how long a dreadnaught "pilot" can live so they are technichally immortal. however, not Every dreadnaught "pilot" Appreciates the honor of beeing stuck inside a metal Box for centuries, so alot of them are in an artificial coma until their chapter needs them. there is alot more to this topic but I am on the phone so typing ist hard
