if you're worried about longevity or reliability when it comes to those GY6 engines. I've got about 11,000 mi on mine. Never left me stranded. I use it as my grocery getter I can haul a bucket of cat litter, 40 lb of dog food and 20 lb of cat food on the floor with no issues. 10. Mi home. The best thing I can recommend is to throw the factory carburetor in the trash and buy a slide carburetor for it . makes a huge difference!

@@TheTopCat650 I saw those, but I thought the risk did not outweigh the benefit. almost 100 bucks is steep and as you said, the cable might not be long enough. I'm surprised that with the gy6 50cc and 150cc platforms being so popular that there wouldn't be more slide carbs out there and some of those being cheaper. I also like the thought of manual choke. I'd rather not have the enricher. I prefer to not choke first, then incrementally add choke as needed to start. it causes less carbon buildup.

@@edwardjames6070 Fact is on Scoots the carb is hidden under the "Tupperware" plastic bodywork, so playing with a manual carb lever isn't workable.

Thank you so much Paul, for showing us how to trouble shoot and fix so many issues on these China scooters. I just inherited two 150 scooters .they have been in a barn for 8 years because of a family member dying. One had gas put in it and driven 0.8 miles and the other one has 0000 miles and never had gas put in. So far neither one will run . They start right up with a shot of starting fluid in the breather hole but then died because they are not picking up any gas. I figured the one with gas would have junky gas in the carb and need cleaned, but I don't know why the brand new one is doing the same thing. So your carb fixing tutor here should help. Thanks again..... signed.. David.

Very well done video. My favorite cliff hangar scene was watching the sparks when you used the screwdriver to short across the starter solenoid, right next to the open top plastic cup with gas in it. While in a closed garage. This is not a criticism, and I assumed it would all be okay since the video got uploaded. Clones of the old style ford car starter solenoids are not too expensive, and have much bigger contacts for longer life. I put one on my riding lawnmower for much less money than the "real" one cost.
@LabCoatPaul
@LabCoatPaul 2 жыл бұрын
I guess I like to live dangerously. The sparks next to the gas are only a problem on a hot day where there's a lot of fuel vapor. If it's freezing outside, you can drop a lit match into a cup of gas to extinguish it.

That information about the title issue is good advise for your state but you also need to know that there are different rules in different states. For instance in Indiana, Scooters don't require a license plate for they don't meet the speed requirements but they also don't title scooters so you just register it anyway and they will issue you a license plate and will copy a the title you do have on it if you have one. They can create a new title for you in your name but must physically see the scooter to get the VIN number off of the unit.

I bought my 150cc money pit as a cheap and convenient city vehicle.... it has been anything but that haha. In the end though, parts for scoots are relatively cheap compared to the car world, and I love working on it because of how easy everything is to install. Has it left me stranded? yes. Have body panels or parts fallen off during riding? also yes. Do I regret buy it? not as all. I have such a blast with it despite everything, and when it does run, it runs damn smooth. Buy these if you want a project, if you want an actually good scoot, go elsewhere. AND GET A LOCK OF SORTS FOR CHRIST SAKE! Can't tell you how many times I've rebuilt this thing after it being stolen 😂

Another great video. You forget to mention how much time it took you to learn all of this stuff, not to mention who taught you. I bought my first Chinese scooter this week new. I've been riding motorcycles for 40+ years and doing what I can to fix them when they break, I have 2 bikes right now a 1992 Suzuki vs800 and a 1986 Yamaha xv1100 in addition to my new scooter. Hopefully I'll be able to maintain this old Chinese scooter for a long time, though I doubt it will be running for 31 and 37+ years as the Yamaha and Suzuki are. I noticed in another of your videos you put locktite on everything. I'm wondering what I should do now with this new scooter to make it last a long time. Any advice on how to keep the nuts and bolts from falling apart? Changing oil is easy enough. And is there a type of belt that lasts longer when this one wears out?
@LabCoatPaul
@LabCoatPaul Жыл бұрын
Congratulations on the new Chinese scooter... I guess... or maybe I should say sorry... Chinese scooters tend to use low quality metal for the bolts. Standard bolts are labeled grade 2, 5, 8... based on their psi strength rating. Chinese scooter bolts are weaker than the grade 2 bolts you'll find at Home Depot. When you take parts off the scooter, put them back on with new bolts. You can find the small M6 x 1.0 flanged bolts at ACE Hardware, online, or get some old bolts off a car in the junkyard. The bolts that hold the wheels, shock, and engine are stronger because they're big. Use loctite so they don't unscrew themselves. When you have the seat and body plastic off, replace fuel hoses and remove / simplify emissions components. I have a few videos about that. Your Chinese scooter will work for as long as you want, but you'll have to do 10x more repairs than a Honda. When the Chinese scooter is 30 years old, it will look like it's 200 years old, and you'll have spent 1,000 hours repairing it.

Go through Vermont if you don’t have a title. Way easier since they do not require titles for vehicles over 15 years old or even newer motorcycles under 300cc. You will get plates and registration that you can take to your dmv and say I want a title and they will take your Vermont registration and hand you an instate title and registration Definitely agree tho that cost doesn’t seem worth it for that scooter, I’ve had 5 Chinese mopeds in the last year and got all for under $200 and got them running decently with just a couple hours and simple parts. Even running I don’t find these to be worth much more than $6-700 in my market. Fun projects tho!

Something really big you have to be concerned about in CA is that they charge the NEW OWNER with all the late fees on the registration accumulated by the previous owner. That can amount to hundreds, even thousands of $$$ if the vehicle has not been registered for a long time.

Hi Lab Coat, thanks for the unvarnished commentary in each of these videos. I've got one of those GY6 150's and debating whether or not to upgrade most of the major components (CVT, Big Bore Kit, Oil Cooler, Shocks) to ride the 2023 Scooter Cannonball. Or just purchase a Honda ADV 150 or Logan KPV 150. I'm figuring it's going to run at least 2k for quality parts. Got about 6 months to figure it out. Could be an adventure, just not sure if it would be a "fun" adventure. What's your opinion?
@LabCoatPaul
@LabCoatPaul 2 жыл бұрын
I had no idea that existed! Chinese scooters can be ok if you replace the whole scooter. (or most of it). If you've fully gone through the scooter, you might make it the 3,170 miles. You're far more likely not to break down on a Honda. If you're in it for "fun", sure - bring a Chinese scooter, tools, spare parts, and duct tape. You'll be having many unexpected adventures.

@@LabCoatPaul Yeah Paul, it's a really interesting rally, been following it from the periphery for a few years. Yes, totally agree with you on going with the Japanese bikes if I'm positive that I want a decent chance to finish. And that is definitely a viable option for me. But... the thought of creating a "Frankenstein" Chinese scoot is something I've been wondering about. If you could locate the best off-the-shelf parts and swap them out. Could you actually make a respectable Adventure Scooter? If you get a chance, take a closer look at the Cannonball and see what's happened in past. I just decided to pull the trigger on it this year, for next year! Thanks for your great videos, I do learn quite a bit from them!

I do believe you when you say the scooter will not last long. But I wonder how long it will last if you take care of it. Or what scooter should you get other than this kind. If you own a scooter and a newer car keeping miles off the car can help a lot with depreciation which can help with resale value. Also a set of tires for a car can almost cost as much as 90% of a new scooter.

I can answer this: with the best of care, expect the scooter to last 4 years before it finally gives out entirely. I would recommend a Honda scooter of any style. Hell get the Honda super cub. It's the world's most reliable and best selling scooter in history with over 100 million units sold. It's reliable, good power for the frame, and parts are abundant due to very few changes between models, allowing you to assemble a frankenscooter if you so wish

dealing with titles SUCKS even if they are 1 owner and you knew them. My grandfather owned 7 wheeled vehicles. all but 1 of significate value. During his final years battling cancer he miss placed them. (we never found them). Even with the death certificate getting new titles has been a NIGHTMARE. he has been gone for 3 years and we are still battling this. all of the stuff he owned was bought brand new from lot so all 1 owner and its still a headache.

hey you really know this stuff well. could i ask you a ?. I'm looking at 150 or 170 scooters. Is there a good china made unit that I should look at. It's hard to know what is junk and what might make a good bike for the money.

I have to ask - since the GY6 doesn't have a wet clutch, shouldn't you be using regular automotive oil (with its friction modifiers) instead of motorcycle oil (without)? It's been my understanding that motorcycle oil does not contain those friction modifiers in order to keep the wet clutch working.
@LabCoatPaul
@LabCoatPaul Жыл бұрын
That's right, the scooter does not need friction modifiers for the clutch. You can use automotive oil, but I think air cooled motorcycle oil may be designed to handle higher temperatures.

@LabCoatPaul 10w30 or 10w40 motorcycle oil as putting the wrong oil in or wrong graded oil can damage the components and engine itself it's like running a car or a scooter/moped or motorcycle or any other thing with a engine without oil or wrong oil or over filled oil can cause serious damage to the engine and thst also goes with the wrong grades or oil aswell as you use wet clutch oil in your normal scooter that will make everything slip or even damage the engine completely or even heat sieze it aswell which isn't good

Instead of Evaporust you can just use a strong vinegar
@HannahFortalezza
@HannahFortalezza Жыл бұрын
Yep, and it's a good idea to throw in a (counted) number of clean bolts & nuts, filling the tank all the way to the top. every few hours you can shake the tank around and the bolts/nuts will help dislodge the rust, rather than relying on a pressure washer which will not reach many places in the tank. Remove the vinegar and bolts, clean out then spray with some machine oil to help prevent flash rusting.

"Without registration, you cant ride this on the road" *chuckles in Missouri* But seriously though, if you live in a state that doesnt require rego for scooters like this one, $45 would be a steal for someone whose mechanically inclined and looking to build something custom

@@LabCoatPaul I've got a wild idea for you? You know how to weld? You got an old four wheeler laying around? You know those old pre world war cycle cars like the Standford Cycles car and the Morgan 3 wheeler? What I'm getting at is that I'm building a modern cycle car that fits withing my states moped guidelines so I can have a car with a sealed, heated cabin that doesnt require insurance or a title to drive
