So awesome! I have a 40’s Duplex kit like this RK kit. It’s the kit that got me into refurbishing vintage drums! The story…so awesome! They will sound amazing! My Duplex kit uses RK shells. Wonderful story! The WMP will clean up nicely so will the lugs! Again….awesome!!!
@shawnsdrumcave9 ай бұрын
That's killer! I don't know to much about Duplex but have seen and heard about them. Sounds like an awesome kit! I'm a nerd about drum history and specific history to kits. Like "If these drums could talk" type stuff. I get a lot of kits I have no idea where they've been and who owned them. It's cool when I get some of the back story/history with them. Thanks for watching!

I used strictly Radio Kings for a bit over 15 years, live and in the studio. Tell ya what, when you mount the toms using non-altering modern methods, Air Ride feet on the FT legs, and mount modern heads on them, they’re absolute weapons! I take 6 snares to every recording session and the wooden ones are 5.5”, 7”, and 8.25” Radio Kings. No acoustic environment has ever defeated them. Congrats, brutha, those are treasures.

Right on man! I do plan on putting modern heads on it but saving the originals. Thanks for watching!

Shawn, that is the calfskin sound. I dig that sound. Don't compare them to plastic heads or it will do your head in. They sound great! Good find bro
@shawnsdrumcave9 ай бұрын
Oh for sure! These just have such little tension on them right now, I did end up giving the 13 a couple small turns as it was way lower than the 16, lugs were pretty much finger right maybe and the bass drum is filled half way up with that stuff lol thanks man!
@philipnestor50349 ай бұрын
A lot of drummers in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s would sometimes put shredded newspapers inside the bass drum to cut down on some of the ring of the those larger bass drums. Krupa use to our crumpled newspaper in his bass drum.

Great find Shawn!!! I also paid $1200 on a natural wood Radio King set from the 40’s. Aluminum badge era. Came with a 28” bass drum, 9x13”, and 12x14 toms. No cymbals or stands, but original calfskin heads. The thing was clean with very little scratches. No deep gouges of any kind. Had to fork over the cash 💰. Engraved hoops and everything. Couldn’t be more pleased. 😎

What alot of people overlook with the vintage sets and their desired sound is that the rims are heavy diecast, just like this one. These rims, not cheap lightweight knockoff metal rims like most nowadays, play a more important role of the great sound of these drums than the drum shell, and the rims are equally imperative as the drumhead. Try to make these drums at least closely match visually like they were intended, clean up the hardware and prevent further corrosion, throw some vintage new heads on this kit and play it as any drumset was intended instead of locking it away or just display to serve no purpose.
@shawnsdrumcave9 ай бұрын
100%! Rims, heads and shell construction! That's the plan! I'm going to do a resto video, I'll be putting new vintage style heads on it so I can play it without worrying about damage to the original heads but I'll keep those with it. I play everything I own, if it's too much of a collector piece I find a new home for it. Thanks for watching!

thanks Kurt! yeah, i messaged him not long after he listed them but never heard back until Saturday morning 🤣sometimes you just have to be patient and hope you hear back haha i may end up trying to whiten them a little, see if i can get them closer to the floor tom, as much as i want to tare into them right now it's going to be a bit, i'm knee deep in my silver sparkle gretsch and haven't had time to finish it yet. lol
@brianchisnell15489 ай бұрын
Great drums! Gene Krupa deluxe model # 1N. Floor tom could be newer as a basket was used on Cloud Badge era. The floor tom can be dated. Lug position was changed on later models. I have both versions. We could check that.
@shawnsdrumcave9 ай бұрын
good info thanks! i was thinking that but i was told the picture of his dad was when the set was new and it has the floor tom in the pic, that may not be accurate though.
@brianchisnell15489 ай бұрын
@@shawnsdrumcave My identical kit is Large Oval Badge. '48/'49. My second floor is 16" 1953. The lugs were moved closer to the bearing edge and shorter tuning rods were used. Otherwise identical. These drums are so cool. Feel free to reply with any questions. Good luck!
@briankeefe4769 ай бұрын
Floor tom legs and mounts came out in 1947 so they are probably correct to this kit....as the beavertail lugs with the added "ledge" came out by 1948. So more than likely a '47/'48 cloud badge kit. And the large oval badge on the canister thrown was used from '48 to '50. @@shawnsdrumcave

I have one very much like it. Unfortunately it was my main gigging kit back in the 70s, and 80s during my punk rock days and I beat the shit out of it. Radio King snare is still in good shape, bass drum had a consolette and spurs added to it in the 60s or 50s. My dad bought it used in 1952.

What a beautiful kit. It just brings you back to another time. If I had it, I would just look at it all day. Its second home could be no better. Looking forward to its restoration. Can anything be done to its faded color or will it require all new wrap. Shame if that vintage pearl has to go. By the way, watched your Bonham Green Sparkle Vids. Who do you get your wrap from? Can’t believe the Drum Center of Portsmouth didn’t snap those up for their drum museum.
@shawnsdrumcave8 ай бұрын
Thanks! I was surprised they didn't grab it also! The WMP wrap is staying for sure even if yellowed! Too much history with this kit to alter anything from original. I get delmar wrap, usually from precision drum in NY but I found another guy to sell me the green, he doesn't typically sell it though. Thanks for watching 🙏 and happy thanksgiving 🦃

Such a cool find!!! What do you think of the 70's Slingerland kits? I have an offer for a black (😴) 20/12/16 kit for a guitar I have that I value at about $650. I initially declined but am reconsidering it. I play mostly rock and have been looking for my first "vintage" kit.
@shawnsdrumcave9 ай бұрын
thanks! i love 70's slingerland kits, that's an odd size combo, less desirable than others like 13,16,22 or 12,14,20. just a generic black 12,16,20 i'd value around $500 imo i'd keep looking.
