John Paul II was the power in Poland. Not the Communists, and definitely not the Soviet Union. How Israel says never again. Poland should be screaming this even louder after suffering so mighty under oppressive regimes for so long. First, the Nazis. Then came the Soviets.

You need to look more into this. It's not an overstatement. Basically the Poles begrudgingly accepted Communism as long as they could keep their Catholic faith. Most every other Communist country outlawed it, and while the communist officials in Poland wanted to outlaw it, they knew that there would be a widespread revolt. As the video shows, the communist leaders blocked previous popes from visiting, but John Paul II insisted and they really would've looked foolish blocking the first Polish pope from Poland. The Communists tried their best to make sure he didn't make such a splash. They chose smaller cities and hid crowd sizes on TV. But with 1,000,000+ people gathered in Warsaw to see him, they finally saw the truth that the Party had tried to hide from them: we are united, we have the love of God behind us, and we can overcome the yoke of Communism. Without him there, the Polish people would have thought they were alone and unable to overcome what they saw as the majority. Through the pope, they saw the Catholic faithful WERE the majority and thus could not be denied. They started Solidarity right after this and the rest is history. This was in 1979, 6 years between Gorbachev and 10 years before the fall of the Berlin Wall. With St. John Paul II there would be no Solidarity. With no Solidarity, there would have been no fall of Communism in Poland and thus no fall of Communism in the Eastern Bloc. Guess which date Communism was voted out of Poland? June 4th, 1989, the same day as the Tiananmen Square Massacre. The protests had been going on for over a month at that point. But despite the newly elected leader of China claiming to be a reformist, he obviously saw what was happening in Poland and took it as a threat that had to be ended. So yeah, St. John Paul II was the catalyst that started this downfall. Learn history.

The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles. Freeman and slave, patrician and plebeian, lord and serf, guildmaster and journeyman, in a word, oppressor and oppressed, stood in constant opposition to one another, carried on an uninterrupted, now hidden, now open fight, that each time ended, either in the revolutionary reconstitution of society at large, or in the common ruin of the contending classes. ― Karl Marx, The Communist Manifesto

Who cares??! The real motive anyone wants a black Jesus or a black pope is some sort of political messianism of dark peoples. Secondly it's not "they"r job or their church, it is God's! If God wishes a non-white pope He will elect one, simple as that!
