Saved them from getting their spine crushed and being in a wheelchair for the rest of their lives, possibly even killed if the impact caused them to be pulled under the train or impaled by a part of the locomotive or a fatal blow to the head. Blue Comet Productions I know right. People just don’t care now a days. It’s especially disappointing because, like you said, after the man picked her up, she just kept recording. First off, WHAT KIND OF STUPID DUMBASS WOULD DO THAT!!? If that was me, I would be praising the man for saving my life, because I (like any other human being) care about my life. Here, it just seems like he doesn’t care that his life was spared. That’s what really ticks me off! It’s that ungratefulness that the man showed in that video. And another thing, HOW COULD HE NOT HERE THAT HORN BEHIND HIM!!! He didn’t even bother to look back and when he did, he just stood there. Common sense would tell him to “Get your ass out of the way”, but no, he just stood there like any idiot would do. He deserves to be called an “idiot”.

That's probably why a lot of rail lines in Britain have fences on either side, so as to prevent something like this from happening.

I always wonder why people drive onto tracks when a train is about to come. This is no different. But this time I can actually see the persons face to get a glimpse of what they might be thinking. Absolutely nothing. They see nothing. They feel nothing. They perhaps don't care to live or die. Nothing means anything to them. Not even being tapped on the shoulder, yelled at, or physically moved. I don't understand it. But some people are just destined to die by train. They just don't care. Maybe there is just no explaining it and it's that simple, no more complicated than that. They literally just don't care if they die.

People like this are NOT usually genuine rail photographers who know how to behave around moving trains. They're the Mums, Dads & kids who go "to see the steam train" and I'd say there's quite a few of them in that shot (e.g. Mum waving to the train).The kid who almost gets hit is only filming with a phone and what sort of shot does he get when the intermodal moves right in front of him but he keeps on shooting. Whenever you get the general public around moving trains there will be idiots like this but unfortunately as others have said they give all railfans a bad name. What is amazing is his lack of reaction to almost getting injured - which only indicates that he has absolutely NO idea of how dangerous a train is or how much it overhangs the track.
@travelsonic

Cliff Leigh "...unfortunately as others have said they give all railfans a bad name. " What about those who perpetuate the idea "Oh, those people are railfan were involved, therefore they all must be careless," or similar stereotypes, do they get a free pass? This is the problem with the idea of "X spoiling it for Y," it ignores that those perpetuating the frustration towards a general group, as opposed to the ones in the group actually causing problems, are the ones helping to fuel the falsehood - in this case, that all, or even a significant percentage, of true rail fans are careless.
@geomodelrailroader

and this is why railfans and the Railroad Bulls hate foamers. If we see someone do this we railfans kick them out of the group if the video goes live. Train crews and the Bulls just kill them. I have seen too many videos where a foamer gets hit those that don't get ran over end up getting a citation but most of them wind up dead with 30 cal ammo inside them. Railroad Police shoot first and ask questions later their orders are the same as when Al Penkerton gave them to them. Arrest or Kill All Trespassers! If a railroad agent finds anyone trespassing on their property they will shoot them dead it is their job to do that.

Never thought of the kid being deaf, which I suppose is a possibility, and would explain his actions. Still he could have been hit, none of this would have happened if he wasn't standing that close to the tracks. I know that you can get kind of "zoned out" focusing on the train you're recording, but you should always make a few quick glances around as you're filming to make sure nothing else is coming.
@gregrowe1168
@gregrowe1168 10 жыл бұрын
Trains are very heavy and a locomotive throttling up that close to you would have been felt, deaf or not. If you're deaf, then you should be more on the lookout anyway. Its not like you have to stand that far from the tracks to not be hit anyway. 10 ft farther away and no incident and still plenty close enough to get a great shot, even 100 ft away is close enough.

One rule no matter where you are next to tracks: DO NOT STAND TOO CLOSE! If you have been around any kinds of trains, you should know that trains can come by anytime - and without you being aware of it, especially in this situation where the two guys were transfixed on 4014 and the horn accompanying it. Probably did not realize that another train could come behind them and be just as loud... Glad nobody got hit, but sad to see the one guy just continuing to film as if nothing happened... THINK!

As a retired NS employee, I was amazed at the antics of railfans, especially around the steam trains. They seemed to go stark ravin' mad around 'em. Once when SOU 4501 was in Charlotte (NC) Yard, the super had to shut down the yard to shoo people out because they were trespassing in there, stepping in front of trains, even swiping anything they could get their hands on. They seem to treat railroads as a "game", a "toy" there for their amusement alone! We used to mock them, making high fun of their striped overalls, red bandanas and wannabe pocket watches. Called 'em "The National Railway 'HYSTERICAL' Society!~ Some real wierdos out there. But the sad part is, when we were aboard engines and someone raced us to a crossing..........and LOST! That HURTS! The most helpless feeling when a car disappears under the nose of your engine!
@gregrowe1168
@gregrowe1168 10 жыл бұрын
The sad part is, if someone gets hurt on railroad property, the railroad is liable and if sued, would most likely lose. In this case, people were allowed by security to enter the yard to watch 4014 pass by. The court would say that they didn't do enough to keep people off the tracks and were negligent if someone gets hit by a passing train. No fences, no signs, not enough security to shoo people away. Gone are the days when you took responsibility for your own actions, its someone else's fault now.
@JerryNSretired
@JerryNSretired 10 жыл бұрын
Greg Rowe And that kinda burns me up in this "ME, ME, ME society that is taught that it is always somebody else' fault when something happens, And, yes, it is often the railroad that PAYS *UNJUSTLY*, btw, for the reckless actions of the public! Right is right and WRONG is *still* WRONG, and stupid people ought not get one thin DIME for their stupid, careless actions both around and away from a railroad! Like when people bust thru crossing gates and get hit. Why, you'd think the train jumped off the tracks and chased them down to run them over to hear THEM tell it!!! :( GRRRRRRRRRRRR!

People want something for nothing. They target huge companies because they know they have deep pockets and many times would rather quietly settle in private instead of being publicly slandered in court even if they know they will win. People die in a car crash and want to blame the car(see Paul Walker) even though they were driving recklessly and well beyond the speed limit. James Dean died in a similar fashion in a Porche because he was driving recklessly on public roads. Did his family sue Porche? No, you didn't do that back then. He chose to drive too fast on a public road and crashed. It was his fault.

That guy must’ve been in a trance or something. To be completely unaware of a loud K5LLA indicating an approaching train and then keep filming like nothing ever happened when that other guy made a spilt second decision to prevent him from getting run over

I'm going to say it since nobody else will...the person who continued to film after being saved from being turned into a pancake should have had the phone camera slapped out of his/her hands, maybe that would have gotten their attention.

Greg Rowe That would probably be theft. If the person is a problem, get them away, or have the police involved, but a policy inviting theft is just asking for more tension IMO.

My question is, how on earth could they either: A. Hear the sounds of a massive horn being sounded right behind them and NOT think that maybe they should get out of the way? Or B. Just straight up not hear the sounds of a massive horn being sounded right behind them? Like seriously, I get it, you don't get to see such a magnificent locomotive like the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014, but honestly people, if you're on railroad tracks, always be aware of your surroundings as if you're on the tracks or on the wood planks holding the rails up, you're in the path of any trains that could be coming down the tracks

Then i did'nt mention what going through the drivers mind. I know from dutch train drivers that it is not funny. I think this is not different with American train drivers.

How could that person not hear that Union Pacific freight train (I don't know the exact detail about the locos as I'm British) come towards him? One possible factor of this near miss could be that he had the hood up on his coat over his head which would limit the amount of noise he will hear (e.g. the horn of the approaching UP 8682). This is why I believe people should have to have their hood of their coat not around their head when around the railway (or railroad). Another factor which lead to this near miss is that the person was standing right next to the tracks of the approaching loco (which itself is absolutely fucking ridiculous!) Who would stand on the track just to get a shot of a special move? Its is simply idiotic! Finally, another factor was that the kid (or person) appeared just to be concentrating on the UP 4014 'Big Boy' move taking photos (or filming it) and is not aware of his surroundings and cannot see his surroundings easily (due to the hood of his coat) so he cannot see anyone or anything to the left, right or behind him which is a safety risk as it increases the chance of injury. If that man wasn't there to place him into safety that person will possibly be injured severely or killed turning a great event into a crime scene.

Many have speculated that he/she was deaf or perhaps mentally handicapped. If you're deaf, then always look. Even being deaf, a locomotive throttling up makes the ground shake and this can be felt. If he/she was mentally handicapped, where was the adult who was supposed to insure he/she's safety.
