It's actually a tactical decision. Gives the enemy a target to focus on. The enemy isn't chopping/shooting off your exposed arms and legs if they are busy trying to stab/shoot you in the face.

@@Pizzaportal3142 sometimes not always. Some technology or incomplete prototype becomes a threat to the 40k balance be it being too powerful or too stupid to exist. The grey knight has both of these surprisingly. Kaldor dreigo was the inventor of the dreadnight exoskeleton but after a dispute with mortarian over patent rights which killed dreigo business partner and said patent signing on motarian heart. Dreigo got flung into hell. This example is one of the extreme ones. Inventors usually get assassinated, give up before making the prototype, some better technology was found before actually making the thing, and bureaucracy, so much bureaucracy so that said invention doesn’t malfunction, reliable, and most of all become choas. Like that line of ships that somehow if looked at right a right angle has a choas symbol which caused that line of ships to clap there warp drives and decided hell would be better. Those demon lawyers must have spent a very long time arguing over the legal rights over that ship variant. The other one it’s so stupid it must die applies to most things. But stupidity is subjective but mostly the majority of the universe agrees said thing must die and everyone else pretends it doesn’t exist but is laughed at cause it had the gall to exist. Like how the grey nights are super immune to demonic corruption needs sister blood to be extra immune to corruption somehow. That was dumb for the sake of dumb. Would have made a lot more sense that a thousand sons sorcerer and his long time friends who are now dust bins tries desperately to find a way to give flesh to his brothers and found a doomed world that been consumed by the warp and find the last remaining population of sisters starving, dying, lost to there senses due to them being stuck in hell with no means of resupply for who knows how many warp years have there been. Could be one of the darker stories of 40k and an introduction to an new character who struggles being loyal to choas willingly as a slave but tries to comfort the last of the sisters by disguising themselves as grey knights so that there last moments would be that they did the emperor duty and die content never knowing they were tricked and secretly the sorcerer desires to return back to the imperium despite being consumed by choas. Could work in the sisters blood as a blood fantasy of one of many lies of a said trapped bloodthirster that the sorcerer won in a battle and sealed it as a trophy or poker game to spar in words and hallucinations over choas ideology and what should be done to the remnants of a doomed world. Well that’s my explanation. Hope you can read my paragraphs and not get lost in it.

@@Pizzaportal3142 I understand that most of the advanced military inventions in 40K are from A.I. from the dark age of technology or the great crusade under guidance of the Emperor himself. Because the age of strife set human civilization back thousands and thousands of years, the technology salvaged can’t really be improved due to it being more advanced than what they’re capable of. Making the production and operation of some of the more advanced stuff just faith based rituals because if you can’t comprehend the science of what made that thing turn on and blow up a mountain then it seems much more based on belief and faith. Also people still invent things but because of the ridiculously conservative and religious fundamentalism, innovation is more often seen as heretical regardless of context. When doing something wrong means the possibility of daemonic intervention always do it the tried and true method.

Weird, this is the model that got me into collecting grey knights, something about the baby carrier appeals to me, instead of another gundam style mech.

If you just do what i did use the body of any dreadnought and replace with the baby carrier part and you're good

Maybe if they add disproportionately humungous impractical pauldrons on the dreadknight it would be perfect. I mean regular space marine that isn't primaris has them.

Context please, I'm too new to know about the Matt Ward era, all I know is that he was sucking off the Ultra marines so hard they became the mary sue chapter the most hated chapter despite being the face of 40k

@@lowkeyarki7091 this was back when there were way less ways to buff units or provide rerolls. Also, vehicles worked similar to how they do in the new heresy rules, i.e. a single shot can blow one up. Monsters on the other hand only ever took 1 damage per wound, even if they took a demolisher cannon to the face. So naturally when the nemesis dreadknight came out, instead of being a vehicle, which it clearly is, it had monster rules instead. And that was just scraping the surface, grey knights could mop the floor with anyone. They had so much anti daemon stuff you may as well not even show up if you were a chaos player. This is similar to why people hated tau and eldar big suits. They also got monster rules which lead to these huge units with crazy special rules being damn near unkillable and crazy undercosted

To be fair for him the paragon warsuit is proof that he wasn't behind the dreadknight not to mention that he made some good things like 5th edition necrons

but those pictures of Sargents without helmets, I imagine their helmet has taken damage.

Commanders and such don't wear helmets so that you can, in fact, see that they are NOT Alpharius.

Next question: you suggest to meld greyknight inside of dreadknight, making it a dreadnaught? Next question: if you completely cover pilot in some sort of cabin. How you gonna get him out when suit is heavily damaged? What if cabin broke and cannot be opened?

@@romanpyatibratov4361 There's no reason it couldn't be an enclosed cabin with a door. Almost anything is better than nothing. For example, similar to something like Titanfall.

@@Zack_Raynor that's what i mean. What if a big ass daemon will swoosh his swordicus and heavily damage dreadknigt? Obviously since it is a suit - knight has opportunity to block incoming attack with his hands. So hit will go on hand+shoulder+side of the suit. Now if there was enclosed cabint - there is a MASSIVE probability that integral structure will deform after the hit and cabin may not open. Leaving knight trapped inside. There is a difference between titanfall and dreadknight. In titanfall you fight against bullets. That has penetration properties. You can make a swiss cheeze out of mech and he still will be able to open cabin. But Grey Knights fight against daemons. That have melee weapons. Not to mention you will have to do a lot of covering in cabin. Resulting in more overall suit mass as well as worse balance. To do what? endure one hit and become useless? I see dreadknights more as a nimble exoskeleton for Grey knights. Rather than bulky dreadnaught tanking hulk. If suit gets damaged - knight can easily jump out and fight as regular unit. I was suprised this is the reason people hated dreadknights xD i honestly thought it was because grey knights are so badass, that they dont even need such suits and this is more of an insult to them

They could have done something like in megaman x with the first boss who has a giant shoulder mounted gun pilot power armor

@@Born_Stellar only a construction mech like the one in aliens is plausible. The first mechs will be for construction purposes, untill some random guy attaches a 20mm Vulcan or even a 25mm bushmaster on an arm.

could you imagine? the dreadknight in a dreadtitan. a dreadtitan in a dreadwarlordtitan. each one just strapped to the front of whats next in the line.

marines got a 1 wound buff across the line, which does make me happy considering marines are meant to be unusually tough and resistant to injury. makes me sad they only got that buff because primaris made the rest of the astartes range look like shit statwise.

@@jamham69 back in my day they were all 1 wound, but at the same time most stuff does multiple wounds now so they may as well just have the 1 wound.

OK, the difference is this: The Dreadknight is just a walker piloted by a living operator, who can afterwards get out and continue the rest of their service normally. They're also much larger than Dreadnoughts, and are only used by the Grey Knights, a chapter of the Space Marines that the Imperium denies the existence of, to the extent where they execute any regular soldiers who fight alongside them for knowing too much. In contrast, a Dreadnought is a machine with an almost-dead marine plugged directly into it. That marine from that point forward *is* a dreadnought, as their previously-dying brain controls their new robot body. Most dreadnoughts are functionally immortal, with one (named Bjorn) being roughly 11,000 years old . However, the newer design "Redemptor" dreadnoughts, which are larger than normal ones but not a big as Dreadknights, sometimes drain the occupant's remaining life force as fuel. The people who build them don't know why, nor do they particularly care. Basically every Space Marine chapter uses Dreadnoughts, except the Grey Knights.

The suits are much bigger than a dreadnought, as said before, and more powerful. They, like the suits of armor worn by Grey Knights, are covered in protective wards as well. These suits are specifically made so Grey Knights can fight demons, especially the larger variety. The main weapon of a Grey Knight, and a daemon's greatest weakness, is psychic attacks; and the Dreadknight allows them to increase that power with larger and more powerful psychic weapons.
