Games Workshop has announced the Warhammer 40,000 Metawatch for May 2024 and it is looking like horde tactics from the Ork Codex detachment: Green Tide is on their radar. Expect mass infantry tactics to become the new meta in 40k.

One of the fundamental problems of how damage works in 40k is that you want either all tanks or all chaff. Since both render a different decent chunk of weapons in effective bringing a mixture just allows your opponent to use all of their weapons. That said if horde meta comes it will also boost the heavy tank armies since bringing too much anti tank is bad against hordes.

If you're anywhere in between (Like Space Marine body) you're kinda fucked. Not cheap enough to be expendable. Not expensive enough to be super durable.

Unless your antitank is also anti horde. Modal weapons are great.

We don't need to worry about charts to see win rates for Custodes. My Administratum attache assures me that every time the Custodes arrive, victory is a given. Why, just today he informed me of a victory they will have next week. We're already printing medals. In any case, I fear no Ork mob. Played against a good friend with a Green Tide list with my typical Guard list (which, admittedly, hasn't been great in the present meta), and mollywhopped them. Turns out a lot of blast weaponry does good work into them. And enough lasguns can get the job done too.

lasguns are the perfect weapon because boltguns and lasguns wound on 5's but you get way more lasguns!

This is why the humble grenade launcher is good. It's modal against both hard targets and hordes.

Guard seem setup to counter green tide with, as you said, a LOT of access to blast weapons on their vehicles and weight of fire from lasguns, plus the tanks are cheap enough that you can have a selection. Even with their Superheavies, the only one taken at tournies is the Banesword, which does equally well firing into vehicles as it does firing into infantry. D6+6 shots with Blast and Ignores cover, hitting on 3s (with Lord Solar issuing take aim) wounding on 2s pushes the Ork Boyz into their 5+ invuln save and can absolutely delete Meganobz unless it's inside the Waaagh turn where you get the 5+ invuln save AND a 4+ FNP.

I don't think Admech will stop being good *anti-horde* even if they become less horde themselves. Admech has always been a superb Orks counter, it's actually gross how easily current Admech horde builds crush Orks currently, so really I'm not worried if we go up 10-15% in points and then get actually functional rules.

As someone with a lot of boyz, you can absolutely just stuff them all in a sack and they'll be fine. You might chip the paint a little, but they're not gonna break unless you swing that sack into things with some force. Disentangling your new blob however will take a little time and work.

So, I haven't played since some time in 5th or 6th edition, but it's wild to see "masses of Battleline" becoming a big thing, when I have over a hundred regular Sisters of Battle painted and on the shelf.

you joked about the Errata being stickers but I always thought that the paper codexes coming with vouchers for them to send you free FAQ change sticker sheets in the mail or redeemable at GW stores that would solve a lot of the frustration about there still being paper books

That Gatling Russ would not leave much of an impression. 20 shots sounds good, until you realise it will only average 10 hits, which then have to wound, which then can get dodged by that 5+ invulnerable save. Not that impressive really. I appreciate you leaning more into mass murder though. Pew-pew!

Ah thank goodness for the rules change I was just thinking i am learning the basics and into the more complex things this should make it more difficult! Also woo now when i bring 150+ nids to a tournament I'll actually be able to keep some on the board for more than 1 or 2 turns!

I already didnt like how horde-y my marines were, this isnt going to help with that. My major concern is this style of play with emphasis on battleline is only going to make armies like marines worse because we have not-so-great battleline units, while armies with good batteline(Orks, Cults, Necrons, etc)are just going to get even better Pouring one out for the generic angels of death again

I personally disagree with using frag cannons against Green Tide boyz; 18" is well within Waaagh range and the boss nob's and possibly a warboss's melee will rip those marines apart. I'd recommend infernus heavy bolters for the range, sustained hits and access to hellfire rounds. An honorable mention here is the tried-and-true plasma cannon dev squad. It's got range, blast, strength, AP and up to 4 such guns per unit. The only issue here is that they're barred from joining the black spear task force

It seems to me they're held back by sheer logistics. Horde armies are more expensive, take longer to paint, difficult to transport, hard to hide, take longer to move and generate more dice rolling. Good for the occasional meme, wouldn't want to do it on a regular basis.

Honestly as I put together deathwatch I look forward to hordes of xenos, I think my Bolter boys will stand a better chance against waves of xenos than trying to buy a bunch of anti tank units

same. And it is way more satisfying. Just a shame about the invun saves against our power swords but the S5 helps and there are always Blast Frag Cannons

@@ChristianVonCarmian40kVtuber oh what I built first from what I got second hand was a range focused proteus kill team and indomitor kill team and a bunch of battle line infantry. In theory it’s terrible but in my first two games I’ve fought Custodes and Green horde orks and just teleported around the board and used a captain and lieutenant for special ammo or fallback and shoot shenanigans. They were interesting game for everyone involved which was nice.
