Celebrates the launching of the nation's forty-one Polaris fleet ballistic missile submarines, the "41 for Freedom". These boats formed the nation's undersea nuclear deterrent throughout most of the Cold War. Features footage of USS Tunny (SS-282), USS Woodrow Wilson (SSBN-624), USS Lafayette (SSBN-616), USS Daniel Boone (SSBN-629), USS Mariano G. Vallejo (SSBN-658), USS Will Rogers (SSBN-659), and USS Nautilus (SSN-571). Includes footage of the development of the missile concept, including the Regulus missile era, and testing of the Polaris missile system. First lady Jackie Kennedy appears briefly, as she christens the USS Lafayette.
This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD. For more information visit www.PeriscopeFilm.com

USS Will Rogers Blue Crew Plank Owner, 1966 -1970. Served as Sonar Tec. & Scuba Diver. A fantastic 4 year adventure providing memorys that only a very fortunate few can look back on. Attended our 50 yr. anniversary a few yrs. ago in New London. It was as if the intervening 50 yrs. did not exist. There were some physical changes of course, but same humor, same camaraderie. Looking forward to another reunion. This film is terrific. Especially seeing my onboard work out partner & friend Dick Marsland at the controls. There are certain things that I really miss. Tops among them the close friendships developed during those 4 yrs. Many thanks to Dick M. for sending this to me.

I just wish they had showed the Grant... but it was still neat to learn the history behind her development.

To all those who served, especially to those of my boat, the U.S.S. M.G. VALLEJO, SSBN 658. "Pride runs deep."

@Robert Miller One great boat. I will never forget my experience. I was a "baby doc" and I can honestly say, Missle Techs were the hardest workers and hardest living men on the entire boat.

As Mr. Reimers(You're in good hands with Allstate!) is talking at about 19 minutes in, I was standing to the left of the cameraman. Really weird seeing this 50 odd years later.

The only bad thing about Periscope Films is the time counter in frame.

Here's the issue: tens of thousands of films like this one were destroyed and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like this on online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. So, in the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous KZfaq users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content. We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to deal with these kind of issues.

I appreciate the posting of this video but the large counter makes watching it prohibitively annoying.

Periscope Films provides "stock footage" for teachers, presenters, journalists...etc..etc... To view videos without the time code information just go to their website and become a member, then download a viewer, and enjoy the same videos without time code and better quality.
