I live off grid in Denali Alaska. When I go into the bush, I carry in my ruck or my quad a Mora, a Cold Steel O1 Tailmaster, A Cold steel Kukri, and a Leatherman Surge. If Im riding my Quad, which I often am, because im old.. ,i carry a council axe and a bow saw. Up here, i use what's proven itself to me.. OH I also never leave home without my 4 max scout folder. Its beyond heavy duty..

I have a Mora companion, but I'd rather take my old school Gerber in place of the Mora, it has a blade similar to the Mora and a woodland camo handle, so that's 1 2. For defensive tactics I'd take Gerber CFB tanto (as seen in Olympus has fallen used by Gerard Butler) 3. My Becker BK7 or my esee 4 for bush/fire-craft 4. My coldsteel true flight. That's for knives most will know. Now for my normal carry 1.my leatherman surge black 2.my tanto w/red handle (my design) 3. My large recurve with serrations (Also my design) 4.my coldsteel kukri machete

@phild8095

I was thinking a similar list. But I'm too connected to the land to bug out, so I'll have all of them till the end. But if I were younger, I have my 35 year old Buck almost 6" blade full tang and rubberized grip, a pound and a half camp ax on a slightly shorter than typical handle, my 8" fillet knife, a 28" spade with solid wood to a D handle handle and a diamond 325 grit/1200 grit Sharpal to maintain them. But I would deeply miss my pocket knives, my Schrade kukri, my KABAR, my silky 7" medium tooth, my boning knife, my high carbon chef knife, and my favorite wave serration steak knives, my double edge razor, the first aid shears, the S&W throwing knives and hatchets, the 16" chain saw, the roofing hatchet, the two utility knives, about 50 disposable utility knife blades, the two cheap WalMart machetes (gifts), oh, and the wood chipper that I just used on 4 dozen corn cobs to add to the compost.

As some one who has over 100 knives, plus a collection of Tomahawks and Axes, swords and machete's. Trying to pick just four. Not easy. But let me start by saying, I do not drive, and I need some special gear to help me through the day. So I have a EDC bag that goes with me every time I lever the house. In that bag I have a Swiss Army Deluxe Tinker knife, a old time Gerber Multi Pliers, with full size jaws and one hand open-able, and the newest addition to the bag a Cold Steel Voyager Drop Point folding knife, with four inch blade. These are always with me. So I will not could them. As for the four. 1. Mora Heavy Duty Companion. Great Blade. 2. Condor Tool and knife, Hudson Bay knife, the big one. 3. Buck 119 Special 4. Condor Tool and knife, Golok Machete. For wood processing and self defense. And of course my Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener. Got to keep them blades sharp. Now of course I will be a wise guy and add my Nordland type C viking axe, haa a great blade and a hammer poll. And my Stanley Folding Pocket saw, with a selection of blades. So there you go. I think I would also have a firearm with me. But that's a story for another day :)

Besides my wallet, keys & cell phone, 3 things I never leave the house without: ZT0350, one of my Gerber multi-tools (I've got a few) & MagLight flashlight. Sometimes I'll change out the ZT for my Buck 110 Folder, depends on where I'm going. I've had family members sneer & laugh at me for carrying those 3 items on me all the time.....until 1 of those items ends up being needed by said family members. Then I let them know how unprepared they are. ALL my friends know I carry these items. Even in a suit & tie, I've got those 3 items on me. Better to have it & not need it than need it & not have it.

1. Swiss Army RANGER 57 M GRIP: for fine work, game processing, and tools for scavenging. 2. Leatherman Wave with bit kit: for repairs and scavenging of items I find. 3. Cold Steel Tai Pan: for my defensive blade, I like the 13” dagger with wide enough bellies that it also slashes well 4. Gerber Strong Arm: for heavy-ish duty bushcraft and general knife tasks. As a fellow knife nut, this was a hard choice. I would have liked to have a small hatchet or kukuri. However, in a real SHTF situation, having tools that can do repairs, open cans, have awls, and more just seems to me to be a higher priority.

Start it off with my Leatherman Wave+ and my White River Ursus 45 in 3V, the two knives I EDC anyways. Finish it with the pair of CRKT blades on my A-to-B Bag and plate carrier, a Kangee T-hawk and a Sangrador, respectively. The Leatherman has small blades for finer tasks, a small saw to effeciently harvest small tinder, and a small file. It really comes in handy for all sorts of basic everyday menial cutting chores. The Ursus 45 in 3V is an ergonomic and indestructible utility knife that could serve for defense, or about anything else, from harvesting game to shelter construction. I could use it as an e-tool or pry bar if I had to. In the forested Rocky Mountains, a small axe or tomahawk is an indispensable piece of kit. The Kangee has done a lot of stuff for me; wood processing, breaching, harvesting game. When you've seen how easily it effortlessly takes apart a deer, you understand the terrifying implications with regard to its use as a weapon...truly devastating. Then the Sangrador, a small double-edged dagger is what I feel is the ultimate fighting knife. It is sharp all over, lightening fast and responsive. Apltly named, sangrador translates from Latin for bleeder. I think these four covers all the bases with some overlap, and my drawer allows me to outfit my friends and family as well. It would be hard to leave some, like my Tops Longhorn Bowie and HOG 4.5 behind, but knowing my wife and kids have good cutting tools on them means I don't really have to.

Well without having had the opportunity to try all my blades I think these would be my choices: For a large blade, to process wood and chop vines, my Kershaw Camp 10 or my Schrade SCHF9. General purpose: a Gerber Prodigy or a QSP Bison. For a tactical type self-defense knife: the Cold Steel Recon Tanto or the Steel Will Argonaut. For survival and Bushcraft I would go with the Mora Garberg. For a light knife to cut food I'd choose the very first knife I ever purchased which is my Buck Woodsman.

I agree with the Mora. Since I do not have a fixed blade, I’d probably carry the Cold Steel Voyager. For wood, I’ve always used a Sven saw for backpacking and I know it will keep me warm. Ive always carried bear mace, a loud whistle, and a tiny air horn. Just because it’s sharper than a razor and I’ve used it to cut bandages, vines, and most any material, I’d feel lost without the Milwaukee spring assisted with the serration.

1. Buck 119. I've gutted a lot of deer with that knife before I learned a smaller one works just as well. But, after 35 years, it deserves to go with me. 2. KA-BAR Cutlass Machete. It is tough and cuts. It would be my first choice for a fighting knife. 3. Cold Steel Hudson Bay Camp Axe. It is light for an axe but works better than a hatchet. 4. Not as picky, but a small pocket folder with 2 or 3 blades. Something like Buck Knives Stockman Pocket Knife. Honorable mention: As a kid I always wanted, and then bought when I turned 18, a Buckmaster. It would be a great fighting knife, but it is heavy for what it is.

The first thing I would grab would be something that could excel at multiple tasks. Which would be my Zombie Tools Scyllis. Styled after a Persian fighting knife. But nearly a 1/4” thick of well heat treated 5160 spring steel. Can easily shrug off batoning and chopping. But could easily transition to a fighting knife. Next I would take my ESEE 4 for smaller hard use tasks and game processing. Third I would take my Kobalt folding saw with interchangeable blades for metal, wood and plastic. And lastly probably a folder. Which, as much as I love all my fancy folding knives, would probably be my Ontario RAT-1. Until I get a Cold Steel AD-10 anyways haha

Thanks for the video. I grew up in East Tennessee. I was surrounded by the easter deciduous forests similar to where you are. I would pick one set of blades for that scenario. I lived in Oklahoma City for six years. I lived in southern Louisiana for over ten years. I've now been in Wyoming for over ten years. I've lived other places for shorter periods of time. I lean towards a different set of choices for each location. Much would also depend on whether I could carry a true axe or a saw for processing wood. Either of those would be better than any kind of "blade" in a survival situation. Because I live where there isn't a tree within a mile of my house in any direction, I don't currently own a good axe or even a good saw. Much would also depend on what other weapons I could carry for self-defense and whether I lived in a place where I thought I would need to fight my way out of my location. For instance, I lived in western Houston for a little over two years. If things went insane at that time and I had to get out of the city but didn't have access to firearms, I'd have to choose blades that would be primarily fighting blades. I have a short sword that has "Cobra" stenciled on the blade. I think Windlass made this series of modern fighting swords. I'd probably pick this sword, pick a tomahawk by a company that I refuse to acknowledge any longer, and pick a push dagger from that same company. None of these would really be top choices for other situations, but I would take them in hopes that they would give me the best chance to fight. My fourth would then be a bushcraft knife. On the other hand, I wouldn't take the sword or the tomahawk if I had access to firearms and ammunition for self-defense. There's no point in using a short sword when I have the option of shooting an attacker. I would still carry the push dagger in case someone got close to me by surprise and I couldn't draw a gun in time. I currently live in a very unpopulated part of Wyoming. If I had to go somewhere, I'd have a reasonable chance of not being surprised by someone getting close. Under those conditions, the push dagger doesn't seem as important. Survival would depend on getting to some place with trees, but I'm not sure where I would go or what trees I would find. I don't have a real saw right now. I think I have a Harbor Freight version of one of those Asian trimming saws. I'm going to assume that the saw would cover many of my wood processing jobs and not count against my total. 1. machete - I have two old machetes that I've used quite a bit when I was younger. I'm not sure which one I'd take, but I feel confident processing wood with them. I'd still hope to use the saw for most wood processing, but a machete is still a great tool for building shelter and can be pressed into service as a weapon. 2. kukri - I have a couple of kukri. I'm not sure which I'd rather take. I'd take one. A kukri would be a good backup for wood processing, would be effective for self-defense, and could probably be used for hunting. 3. bushcraft knife - I have a Gerber of some kind that would probably be my first choice. 4. bushcraft knife - I would probably take my other bushcraft knife from the company that I don't like to name. Maybe I would take a smaller kukri instead.

Thanks for the fast Heart. Item 1 would be sacrificed to keep a Bug Out Bag Kit with 70 ounces of Water to 20 lbs. If there is a prepared, and genuine Bug Out Location waiting for you, then personal Security/Safety, Water and Speed are the priorities enroute to the BOL. Security would be augmented by a 9mm CCW with a Suppressor, and also a High Lumens Flashlight with UVC light for Non-Lethal options. Spare Wool blend socks, Silk-weight thermals, Wool watch cap, Swagman Poncho, Small FAK, and 2 large Lawn Bags would minimally round out the Safety portion. 70 ounces gets you 4 days max in such a stressful scenario. Therefore a couple of Straw Filters, a Titanium Grayl Filter, in addition to a Small Water Bladder and primitive filtering will be essential. Speed will be drastically improved if the route is reconned and well practiced during day and night travel. Day/Night Land Navigation with or without a Map & Compass is a must, otherwise you’re an easy victim when you’re being hunted. Perhaps these parameters could be another video!

1) Companion: Vosteed Nightshade 2) Tactical: Bark River North Country 2 fixed blade 3) Bushcraft: Tora Blades Havildar Khukuri 4) Big Blade: TFW Ginunting The Vosteed Nightshade is a folder I have used for everything: Household chores, Cooking, opening boxes, precision cuts and detail cutting, etc. The slanted blade really helps take strain off my wrist when I gotta make a lot of cuts in one sitting. My Bark River North Country 2 comes with a sheath I can carry on my belt. I like appendix carrying since its out of the way and can be hidden well under a jacket. My Tora Blades Havildar Khukuri is the one I like the feel of most. I love khukuris and have several in my collection. Tora makes some of the best ones that are historical reproductions. The stick tang construction makes the blade more top heavy and less strenuous to both swing and carry. And it can be used to fight in s pinch. The TFW Ginunting is a Filipino blade. Its machete length, lightweight and slender. It can be used to slice through vines and light brush but excels more in combat situations where the forward curve at the tip causes slashes to stab into a target and also "rebound" faster for a second swing. And the top 1/3 of the back edge is sharpened so it can do reverse cuts but also being blunt at the back end of the spine allows me to brace and block with my blade if needed.

Hi, I'm German and a bug out bag over here would look totally different than in the US. No weapons but lots of foot and goodies for trading ,tobacco and schnapps. People come together in tragedy, they don't rip each other's heads off. ;) But if I would have to take 4 knives I would take those. Leatherman Wave AD 10 SOG neck knife Omega Slings Belt Knife

1) Skullcrusher SXB ( Chops like an ax, notches wood with its saw feature, can be used for defense ). 2) Woodman's Pal ( Good for clearing brush, cutting fire breaks and can be used as a weapon ). 3) Swisschamp or Explorer Swiss Army Knife for unmatched versatility . (Victorinox Brand only ) 4) Air Force Pilot's Survival knife : Pommel is a hammer, sharpening stone in sheath, saw for creating sawdust tinder, blade shape good for fighting. Note : Nothing made in China !

Great topic! No budget knives on this journey Daniel! All are already in my Go Bag. My Hunter knife is my Shokunin Warlock hunting knife. This knife is second to none for processing all game. My Combat knife is the Ka-Bar Becker BK9. This weapon will KEAL! My Camp and Wood knife is the Big Bushcraft Hatchet knife #7. Use it one time and you'll never use another. Last but not Least...My Pangui Neck Knife. This is the one that saves you in the dark places of the world when you need a secret friend! What ya think?

BPS kiridashi - best wood carver ever, Tops Tom Brown Tracker - firewood processing, shelter construction game processing, Glock 81 - indestructible utility knife, dig a hole, dig an arrow out of a tree (or a zombie skull in keeping with the theme), process game, strike a ferro rod, and the handle stays cool when you heat the blade to cauterize a wound, Cold Steel Templar - equally indestructible and the only blade capable of Hollywood level throwing - any style, any distance, any target, sticks every time! The Kukri is your battle knife. In the Apocalypse you need to think about weight. Carrying water. I agree with 1 and 4. Otherwise, you need a knife that can become a spear. Or shovel.

Rather than the Mora Companion, I'd select the Mora Eldris (were I going to choose a Mora.) The Eldris handle and blade are shorter, but that makes them more controllable and they're still long enough to get the job done. In fact, the Eldris handle is more comfortable and useable than the other Mora handles.

1 a swiss army knife w wood saw metal file and 8 other blades..2cold steel OSS, carbon V blackened blade,,3 buck124 4 a quality made Brazilian machete w saw teeth on the back properly set and sharpened..FYI all cutting teeth on a wood blade (circular saw,jig saw, hand saw,) must be "set" or bent, so that the cut is wider than the blade,,cheap chinese machetes ,(after shtf no telling what you will run arcross),you can look down the top and see the teeth are straight and flat like the blade,,every other tooth must be set,, you can do this with a vise and a hammer and nail, clamp machete so just the cutting teeth are above the vise jaw,and lightly tap the first tooth away from you, next tooth tap towards you, next tooth away , repeat till done..a quality machete w sawback teeth will already have this done,u look down the top and you will see every other tooth bent so the cut is wider than the blade..survival wire ropes dont last too long,or you can carry bow saw blades and a few bolts with you for a wood cutting saw..and the buck 119 is very popular ,BUT its a partial tang knife, and can be broken,, the buck 124,@ $200 is a bit pricy ,but its a full tang knife, unbreakable with two hands and 300#, look for a used one online..thats dinged up..or a cold steel GI tanto , if your on a budget.
