Society puts far too much importance on sex! Do it, don't do it it truly is all up to the individual & nobody else. We've got to stop making such a huge deal over nothing, especially the very 1st time. THAT is usually award af the 1st time. Seriously just imagine if we treated _any_ other physical activity like we do sex. Ie: Did you hear? Jimmy & Susan have never ever jumped rope before?! But once you get past a certain age (and not just being a virgin mind you) it's just not that big a deal anymore. Though I assume it's still awesome if you have sex lol

I’m 55 and have never shared a genuine romantic moment with another living soul. Have never even kissed a girl, much less had sex. It is profoundly embarrassing. Honestly, once I turned 40, I kind of knew it wasn’t going to happen. I hate it and would really have loved being involved with someone but I am blessed in other areas of my life and try to focus on the good things. The worst is when people put me on the spot and ask specific questions about being single that I don’t want to answer. Doesn’t happen often but it will occasionally.

That's one of the greatests issues indeed, virgininity itself is not a big deal for most people (unless you are a sex addict or something like that). One could live their entire life without ever having sex and don't give a damn about it (me included). Honestly I had sex for the first time at 28 yo and it wasn't a big deal at all. The big problem is the social and psychological stigma that comes with it, society and your subconsciousness will judge you for being a virgin. We shouldn't let others (society) make us feel bad...

"I am blessed in other areas of my life and try to focus on the good things" Look at you, trying to protect your little ego at your own expense, focusing on your successes to hide your failures from yourself... Go talk to women, ask them out, do it wrong, be awkward, get rejected most of the time, get your ego crushed, laugh about it and be happier.

Being lovely and genuine doesn't help it when you are shy, inexperienced and lack persistence. Most women don't openly express their affection and expect men to figure it out and take action. But this requires certain degree of courage and experience from man. So when the man is shy and inexperienced, it's easy to start acting creepy and thus quickly become repulsive to a woman (most people learn these things during their teen years, so one is expected to know all this when being an adult, which is not the case when one is an old virgin). And the more he gets rejected, the more he is negatively reinforced to avoid taking any action, including just showing affection. Also, the fact that woman's way of showing affection is usually indistinguishable from "just trying to be nice" doesn't make it easier. I am a 40 year old virgin myself, and I also heard similar things quite a few times (while I was still living in my country, where asking personal questions is more common than in the west).

Major props to this guy for being so open about this. He seems very emotionally mature and would probably be a better partner than many men. I didn't have sex until I was 26 and I definitely had a sense of shame about it, but I bet it's more common than people think. I had a lot of fear about letting anyone get too close to me (either physically or emotionally!) so I barely even attempted dating until I was mid 20s, and then it took a while before the right man came along with enough patience to slowly prove himself trustworthy! 😂

I’m not waiting for marriage or anything, it’s just never happened for me. It’s never really bothered me, and on the occasions when it has, I just think ‘ehh, it’s only hormones, just chemicals in my body.’

Never say never! I think try and find someone nice if possible even if it doesn’t work out in the end, then you’ll know if having a partner might be worth pursuing. I lived in Cornwall for a few years after a breakup and it was super easy to stay single if I didn’t socialise!

I'm 36. I spent my early to late 20s really giving relationships and dating a go. And I just always failed at it. Despite trying, I failed every time. Not just failing at having sex, but failing at actually having relationships. Then one day, and I couldn't recall when, I just stopped trying. I lost hope. Went years not even realizing until now that I'm 36 and basically a functioning recluse. The recovery from here is near impossible. Stephen's message about hope is very real. Never lose it. Hmm, I'm 2 years older than that guy but am in the same predicament as you. And yet I do not feel that level or depth of pain, nor hollowness or self hate. I don't know why my feelings turned out differently than yours; so I'm at a loss of what advice to give you. I have Asperger's so that probably helps. I think having a career and hobbies that occupy my time well keep the loneliness at bay. I had a dog for 17 years that kept me company; he passed away last April, so I have felt a bit more lonely recently than in the past. I think I've just adapted to my solitude and enjoy it. I'm fulfilled by my own company. Nietzsche, for me, said it best: "My solitude doesn’t depend on the presence or absence of people; on the contrary, I hate who steals my solitude without, in exchange, offering me true company."

I disagree with you. If you are in a bad relationship you have an option to end it. If you cannot find anyone who wants you then the feeling of powerlessness and lack of freedom is totally crippling. It is a totally different experience never having found anyone then it is if you are in between relationships and are just waiting to find your next.

There is a big difference between being alone after a breakup and having memories of love you felt versus being alone and never have experienced love. It's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. I've had a very long dry spell recently. It didn't feel nearly as bad as in my twenties being a virgin.

Being a decent all round person is more important than anything else. We live in a society that can stigmatise anybody for such things like this. I’m learning to drive at the moment and I’m terrified at times. I feel somehow less of a person because i don’t drive so it’s been hard. Amazing respect for coming out like this. I'm sure there are many people in the same boat who think they are alone. Shyness may seem cute or attractive bur trust me it is a curse and can make life very difficult and lonely at times. It's something you have to try and overcome every day just to get on in society. There is always someone out there for you, you just need a bit of luck finding them and it often happens when you're not even trying.

Very endearing man. Quite brave to open up publicly about this subject. Society over sexualizes women, relationships, men, with expectations that often are delusional. Just because one man maybe experienced doesn’t mean he is of quality. Often times those who have overtly played, are missing true connections, intimacy or even respect to their partners. There’s very little honor, or genuine respect to building relationships these days. There’s even less intimacy, where people have become disposable at whim. I think that commonality is not necessarily the act of, but the emotional connection we all crave, that can be thwarted. One can feel these same emotions even when they are sexual. In that, you’re not less than anyone, nor are others more than because of experience. I feel you will find that person that makes you comfortable enough to be vulnerable, relaxed, and have fun. Don’t over think it. Don’t have high expectations of self or others, just be in the moment and allow it to flow. And if you choose not to, the loss isn’t the actual act but more of true intimacy which we all deserve.

I am quite taken aback by this video. This man has made me feel a bit better about my situation, and he is incredibly gutsy. He and I are pretty much the same, except I am 36, don't have many people in my life, and am generally lonely. It is not easy living in modern society, where human connection is sparse and nowhere near valued as it was years past.

As a male who identifies on the asexual spectrum, I understand much of what you're going through. As much as I have come to take pride in saying, "sex is not something that interests me", it has often been isolating. There is an elevation of sex as some essential milestone accomplishment, and a lack as a failure. I also have trouble expressing myself that aligns with the needs of my intimate partners. And yes, I can be attracted to people romantically, intimately and not want intercourse from them. On the bright side, you're maybe not missing much! You never know until you try, but your life's experience is not defined by knowing.

More people means more chances of someone inviting you to an event. "The three of us are going to the standup comedy. Wanna come along?" You could go alone to a standup comedy. But alone you won't meet anyone. You would if you are very socially open, but if you were you wouldn't be a virgin. So I can safely conclude you're not. So find friends to go places.
