One of the coolest imports I've had the opportunity to see in action, this extremely streetable 1978 Datsun 280z takes it's first trip to the drag strip to do some testing. The car has an LS1 with heads, cam, and FAST intake manifold putting down around 450 wheel horsepower! Best 1/8 mile time was 7.11 for the night.

What a great looking car. It's fast too and I like the fact that he put a corvette motor in it rather than another import 4 cylinder, it makes it unique. I learned to drive in my sisters '85 200sx lol. Not quite the power as this monster but lots of fun.

26x 8.50 x 15 on a 9.5" rim for the slicks. Kept breaking axles after this outing, so did a cobra 8.8 swap. Should hold up well. Hoping to hit the road course this summer!

S30 chassis cars are some of the best-looking ever made. One thing you can say for ALL generations of Z-car is that they have REALLY stout drivetrains. There are 350z's running 8's with the stock 6-speed and rear diff.

I am still not sure if the 2+2 is good or gawky. ...I guess it's all relative. If it's by itself, it's fine; if it's by a bunch of 2 seaters, maybe less so.

***** No, you want to get a pre-75(240/260z) for smog reasons or if you plan to race it, they are lighter. 6k doesn't sound too bad if the paint is decent with no or minimal rust.
@ThatCarGuy
@ThatCarGuy 8 жыл бұрын
***** Get a 240sx, a little bit heavier, but they are a better drift platform, cheaper, parts easier to find, and when you crash it(sorry but everyone does LOL) it wont hurt as much as losing a classic. The 240/260/280s are better for drag racing anyway due to the long engine bay(hence why everyone V8 swaps them) But good luck on your build.
@leonvoltaire
@leonvoltaire 8 жыл бұрын
"No, you want to get a pre-75(240/260z) for smog reasons or if you plan to race it, they are lighter" You are half correct{aka weight}. By the time you've addressed the less than stellar frames on the earlier models, you would have been better off with 280z. And the Ls1 is much more efficient when it comes to passing smog{2.8 i6}, so no real penalty here.

Probably somewhere in that range, but it's hard to factor as certain cars pull harder on the big end than others. The 280Z went 7.0something last night I believe. I'd guess it would do a high 10 at around 130.

Hell back when I was in High School in 84 to 86 we were putting in SBC in Z cars, but what you had under the hood was a dead give away, because we had to cut a hole for the air cleaner then add a hood scoop to protect the air cleaner. LOL Now with the LS1 and so on engines it's all under da HOOD. Now I have the same idea but in a 86 Mazda RX7 FC with a T56 6 speed.
