Great video explaining how the .458 Lott came to be. I have a CZ-550 American Safari Magnum in .458 Lott, and I love it! It has a great laminated stock, beautiful and tough. Built on a BRNO ZKK-602, double square bridge Mauser action, it is dead reliable. The recoil is stiff, but not unmanageable. I’ve shot lightweight 45/70’s that were much worse.

I have just discovered you, and I am really enjoying your videos during quarantine. I have a CZ 550 in 375 H&H that I bought 8 years ago and had converted to 375 Ackely Improved and had the chamber lengthened so I can seat the bullets out further. I can shoot a Match King 350 grain bullet with BC of .7 to .8 at just under 2500 fps with Ramshot Magnum powder. I had an 8 ounce merc tube added to the butt stock, and a premium recoil pad added. Its not as powerful as the 416 Rem, but its getting there. Where it excels is for ultra long range shooting where the extremely high BC gives it more energy at long range than most 416 and 458 in particular bullets could ever have. I really appreciate all your years of reading up on African hunters and your extensive library of books and magazines. However, I'm a bit surprised that as a hunter yourself, your not using the Taylor Knock Out value when you compare cartridges. The energy formula, especially for "heavy weight, big bore" rifles, is pretty obsolete. It gives a 2x advantage to velocity, and ignores many other factors that John Taylor saw as being more representative of what happens with "big bore" rifles in the field. Great videos otherwise, really enjoying them. Thank you. Regards. -Tutt

You and UCOG And cyclops videos are my three favorite KZfaqrs right now. The information that I get from you about cartridges you just don’t hear about every day anymore and the hunting prowess that you have coupled with the Vintage rifle knowledge that I get from both you and UCOG speak to the type of information I like to take in on KZfaq and history channel and things like that. I love hearing the stories behind the development of the cartridge or the rifle and the significance. I recently started collecting old rifles and moved away from handguns entirely besides my concealed carry gun and my 357 revolver and that 10 mm 1911 I just had to have. There’s nothing more interesting than the story behind the rifle and the cartridge it shoots to me.

Went from Marlin level 45-70 to Ruger level 45-70 to low .458Win. Each step up let you know it was a different critter. The Marlin 45-70 load was laughably light in recoil.

The 458 Lott is one of the few rounds that I've heard Craig Boddington describe as his upper limit for recoil; that says it all to me. This was a very informative video but like Clint Eastwood said once, "A man's gotta know his limitations." I'd like to try one of these rifles but it doesn't look like something I'll run out to buy just to shoot for the heck of it. Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts on this beast of a round. You're missing the point guys. The great thing about the .458 win mag and the Lott is there versatility. They can be loaded down to black powder 45/70 levels or hotter 45/70 smokeless levels. They can be loaded with light 250 or 300gr bullets for a flat trajectory that rivals a 30-06 and hits like a freight train! Because they have a straight case they can be loaded into a shotgun shell for close range pest control and of course load those 500gr heavies for when the local pachaderms get into your garden! Nothing is more versatile than a .458!

I've been loading and shooting the great .458 win mag for over 30 years and have a great respect for it. It's a very versatile round if you reload for it and I have taken 5 caribou at over 300yds with barnes 350gr triple shocks, a couple whitetails and water buffalo in Argentina with 500gr hornadys. I have even shot squirrels with it by making it into a shotgun shell! That said, I don't understand why Winchester used a 2.5" case for the .458 win mag when the model 70 was already chambered in the 2.85" .375 H&H and while they were at it they used the wrong smokeless powder! Ball powders don't like to be compressed! I've always loaded the .458 win mag with H4895 for 2150fps with the 500gr hornadys in a 24" barrel with no pressure problems. I have several .458 win mags and love them but I also have a Dakota arms .458 Lott which is going to Africa next year for Cape buffalo!

@@desertdogoutdoors1113 correct! But since the CZ-550s are being discontinued, could someone, let's say buy a Winchester 70 Safari in 458 Win mag then have it reemed by a smith to the longer Lott, without pressure issues? Or is that a completely different action size? The reason I ask is (as you stated in the video) the 458 win is "standard" length and the Lott is "Magnum" length. My guess would be that it can be done... because of the other chamberings offered ( .375 H&H and .416 Remington Magnum) I doubt they shortened the action just for the 458 Win Mag, I bet it's like Howa 1500's and Weatherby Vanguard's that they make 1 action size that fits the longest cartridges and the shorter ones just ride the feed ramp a little longer before hitting the throat of the rifle

Good vid especially about scope use. I will never hunt Africa but years ago l came across a deal on a .458 Win. that l just couldn’t pass up. Also my favourite rifle. The original Ruger M77 in this case it is the Tropical. It takes more concentration to shoot it well and is great for practising with. It has a Leupold 2.75 x scope on it which l am now thinking about dismounting to shoot this old girl with the irons only. It is a lot of fun especially shooting water filled jugs to capture those big old bullets ha ha. My .338 win mag seems kind of tame afterwards as well as my .300 win mag lol. Both also are old school M77’s. Bill Ruger’s masterpiece. Thank you good luck all the best. Really like your videos. 🇨🇦🤠

A really level headed review of this excellent cartridge made for budget rifle buyers, I don't think you mentioned that the 458 Lott chamber reamer can convert the 458 Win without much trouble, and the Lott can be used quite comfortably by women as you show on your video, as you observe the recoil of even a 577 NE is not a problem when facing game, but I find shooting 50 rounds at the range can cause a little shoulder bruising, and you have to be aware of any overhead awnings at the range due to muzzle rise. Sensible choice not to fit a scope, or the much disliked muzzle brake. Many thanks for posting this! Chris B.

I agree with you to a point. I have had several .458 win mags over the years and have a lot of respect for it. If Winchester had not been married to there ball powders and used H4895 like I have been for 40 years I don't think there would have been any problems with the .458 win mag. With that stick powder 2150fps is easily achieved with a Hornady soft or solid. That said, I also have a Dakota .458 Lott that I love but will never get rid of my various .458 win mags which have taken several caribou, deer, bear and waterbuffalo. I don't load the Lott a hole bunch hotter but agree the extra powder capacity helps when loading monolithics. Love the .458 winny and the Lott. Just sick of the .458win mag bashing! If loaded properly it's a great cartridge!

It absolutely is a great cartridge, and as mentioned in the video, its easy to get that perfect 450NE performance with ease. Modern commercial ammo is also great; so every past issue with this cartridge is a thing of the past. Unfortunately, Winchester ignored the issue long enough for a wildcat to become a legitimate and slightly better replacement.

My teammates wanted to kidding me, one of them gave me that beast after I shooted some 9.3 's and .375 H&H without any words about caliber, trigger or so. For gods sake open sighted. I bought a CZ 550 American in .458 Lott just for the heck of it. I liked the rifle and it even had the great CZ set trigger mechanism, though I don't know why it would ever be used on a .458 Lott. The first time I fired that rifle, I was standing and the recoil pulled my trigger hand right off the grip. I waited 20 minutes before taking a second shot. I used a shoulder recoil pad after that, but decided that rifle had way too much recoil to shoot too often. BTW, I'm 5' 11" and a solid 200 lbs. I sold it and am now happy to stick with my Kimber Talkeetna in .375 H&H for all my dangerous game needs. I believe the Lott is a great round, but the rifle will need some recoil reduction work to suit the average hunter.

I actually use a .375H&H for all my game hunting here in south Texas. So I understand what you’re saying. I use 250 grain Hornady GMX for just about everything and it kills DEAD. I use 300 grain solids and it simply zips throw pigs and deer and coyote and never slows down. Literally never slow down at all. It puts small 375 caliber holes in them and just keep going. Believe it or not you can eat right up to the hole!!! The .375H&H is by far and away the greatest game caliber on the planet. It will kill from small pigs in south Texas all the way to very large elephants in South Africa. The recoil is roughly 2.5 times a .30-06 but when standing you’ll hardly notice it.

I have always loaded the .458 win mag with 350gr Barnes tsx for lighter game like deer and caribou at 2550 fps with excellent performance out to 400 yds! The new 300gr ttsx can easily reach 2700 fps and should shoot even flatter but I haven't taken any game with it yet. You wanna talk about versatility, how's about loading the .458 as a shotgun shell! It works great as a short range squirrel or snake load! Sky's the limit and have fun with it. It's not just a close range dangerous game cartridge.

@@bobneal790 Not so "bad ass" nothing more than about a 410 shotgun seeing that is nearly identical in both length and diameter as the 410 shell,,,but because of the rifling in the barrel it performs way worse than a smoothbore shotgun in terms of shot pattern spread,,,at just 20 yards the pattern is so spread out your lucky if you can hit a pop can consistantly by anything other than dumb luck (very much the same way it is with the taurus judge revolver and i've tried one of those and they SUCK in every way,,,worthless with shot and inacurate as hell with 45 colt and shotgun slugs and seriously underpowered with the latter), you can't even make use of the strong gun and brass case because the faster you try to drive the shot from the rifled barrel the worse the shot spread gets (been there tested that),, if you want a shotgun get a shotgun it will actually be something you can make good use of and cost WAY WAY less in every way than a rifle chambered in 458 anything,,,and if you want a "snake gun" buy one of those cheap bond derringers in 410/45 colt and shoot 410 shells in it or just use the same sidearm you carry for normal day to day protection because if you are close enough to make effective use of one of the pistol type shotguns with rifled barrels that can shoot with 410 you're close enough to hit it with any gun (or at least if your close enough for the snake to be a threat),,,if you have time to dick around reloading your rifle with specially loaded shot shells then you have time enough to just back off and leave the snake alone and not be one of those dick heads that feel the need to kill just for the sick joy off it( I'm assuming your not running around with your hunting/dangerous game rifle loaded with home made shot shells and will have to unload at least one of the normal hunting rounds to load a shotshell you made up and just happen to be carrying),,,while I wouldn't hesitate a second to kill a venomious snake in my yard or home or if it was way too close to safely back away or it was actully pursuing me people need to grow the hell up and learn to leave such creatures alone if they are out in the wild otherwise minding their own bussiness.

Unfortunately, I'm not a fan or those cartridges. "solutions looking for a problem". I'd take a good old 404J or 416 over them anyday for 15 to 100 yard shots on DG.

I have no experience with 505 Barnes Supreme. WAYYYYY too much for me (and I like big bores). Honestly, I don't even use my 505 Gibbs. I'm happy to draw the line at 458 Lott / 470NE.

The other thing that alot of PH'S did to get ammo for the 458 LOTT was to use 375 take the bullet out of the cartridge half the load charge then pack in so cotton wool & fire form the 375 in yr 458 to get cartridge's aw there where none around👍👍

@desertdogoutdoors1113 I really love this video compared to the 458 win mag. If you make a new video in this category, compare the 458 Lott to the 470 nitro express specifically. Maybe even 470 nitro express No.2 also. After reading Taylors book he decisively states that .450-..475 is more than capable for taking DG. This makes me almost want to upgrade to a 458 Lott or .470 nitro express for buffalo. I realize the book is much older than today’s upgraded bullet technology. I’m thinking about a model 70 in 458 win mag rebored to 458 Lott. Or should I just go custom? Thoughts? Thank for the awesome content Desert Dog. P.S. I already have a 416 rem mag and 375 h and h. Both are great shooters and I handle well.

hi, i carried a Ruger M77 in .458 Win mag for over 10 yrs as a wilderness guide in South Africa, and i trusted it completely, .. i'd say the most important factor is shot placement, then the bullet make up.. (i.e. hand load vs factory, projectile material, powder load etc. - i carried hand loaded 500 gr. brass monolithic solids). The mistake some folks make is loading the .458 Win mag cartridges too hot trying to avoid issues experienced by shooters before modern nitro propellants nullified those issues. I bought my rifle from a PH after his client shot a zebra with it but due to the recoil from the super hot hand load the 3 round magazine box deformed leading to cycling issues (all three rounds jumped out when the bolt was opened).. i replaced the magazine box and using sane hand loads never experienced any further problems with it.

CZ550 and Montana Rifles were the easiest way to go for a production 458 Lott. With the 550 discontinued and Montana out of business, it's a used gun or custom gun market now. The Ruger #1 might still be available in Lott; Weatherby also. European manufacturers also do limited runs.

This will suffice for my daily bullet porn. I dont think ill ever go hunting in Africa so practically speaking my .375 H&H is as large as ill ever need but I do want a .458 Lott. I was debating between that or .460 WBY but living in Canada our incompetent government made the decision for me. The big weatherby is now a prohibited weapon because it exceeds 10,000 joules of energy 🤷‍♂️

The Lott is a great cartridge but it is a thumper. I used it to hunt and kill Cape Buffalo, Kudu and a Zebra with it in Zimbabwe and South Africa. While there I met a hunter from California who used his .458 Lott to take an elephant. The earliest rifles I recalled being mass produced in this caliber were from Ruger and CZ. I suspect both companies helped popularize the cartridge since before that it was more of a custom/semi-custom proposition to have a .458 Lott rifle. Good advice on using a shoulder pad especially when sighting it in off a bench. A final comment, the recoil from a .470 NE or a 500 NE in a double rifle will pound you the same as the .458 Lott at muzzle velocities in the range of 2,150 fps. To shoot these guns a hunter has to get acclimated to the recoil so follow up shots are effective. Why? Because with dangerous game, your Professional Hunter will want you to fire a follow up shot or shots as insurance. Hats off to you for producing a good, informative video.
