The Realignment

Күн бұрын

Steve Coll, author of The Achilles Trap: Saddam Hussein, the C.I.A., and the Origins of America's Invasion of Iraq and Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001, joins The Realignment. Marshall and Steve discuss America's decades-long relationship with Saddam Hussein before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the CIA's intelligence failures that led to radical misinterpretations of Saddam's ambitions after the Gulf War, the Iraq War's significance 20 years later, and how past mistakes can inform today's assessments of Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin.

Thank you! I’ve always wondered about this - (if the WMDs weren’t real… why did Saddam keep acting secretive when he could very clearly see the U.S. war machine gearing up to kill/depose him)

It seems like he was more worried about loosing face than anything else, and this is something we didn't take into account.

We don't need to avoid another forever war. What we need is for the eldery experts to repay the debt they have built before they age out of life. Leaving the problems they made for us to repay. Knowing full well we aren't/can't. A dictator to restructure doesn't sound much worse. Considering the alternative is a debt bubble we can't get out of.

Actually we definitely need to avoid another forever war, and dont hold your breath on the debt repayment thing.

@jbo8540 I'm not worried about the debt. I quit participating in American society years ago. I live off government assistance. Until the value of everyone's assets and dollars becomes valueless. As will happen when we default. The young aren't repaying a debt they didn't spend. I have no interest in current America. Even while living within.

I have a feeling Ryan Grimm (or Krystal and Saagar) are not going to wanting to have anything to do with Marshall, after Marshall was just exposed on hidden camera for accepting $50,000 to infiltrate pro Palestine protests as an agent provocateur. They were even making underhanded, passive aggressive comments about it. The last couple shows they’ve had. I liked Marshall too, but what a jerk. He even said it was his worst fear getting exposed for doing it. Looks like his worst fears have come true

It was lie after lie after lie. They didn't get anything wrong and the trail of discussion is still being felt decades later.
